Be it known that I, Hanni' H. Violines, a citizen of the United States, residing in Corona, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improve ments in '.l."y1 3ew1,';iting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to means for rapidly inserting` cards and worksheets around the platen, and also for eollating and positioning the saine thereon.
In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, provision is made of a rapid inserting` device, of which the inserter handle is preferably mounted to turn about the anis of the platen-shaft and is provided with a tooth which is normally out ot' engagement with the usual toothed wheel on the platenshaft. Upon depression of the inserter handle against the action of a spring, the tooth thereon :may be brought into engagement with said toothed wheel V and, upon swinging the inserter handle rearwardly, a work-sheet or card brought 'into engagement with the usual feed-rolls at the point where the latter Contact with the platen will be drawn between the feedrolls and platen and carried around to the front of the latter.
During the rotation of the handle of the inserter or platen sweep, the tooth is held .in engagement with the toothed wheel by means of a stud on the handle which engages the inner edge of a ring on a stationu ary disk, and, when the inserter handle is arrested in its rear position, the connection between the inserter and the platenshatt automatically broken as a result of the provision in the ing of a notch into whirh the stud snaps, and the tooth is withdrawn from the toothed wheel. Provision is also made of a notch in the ring at the forward limit of the movement of the handle that platen will be released from the handle and may be line-spaced by the usual linegaffe handle or by the usual Vlinger-wheels.

In order to insert the cards and collate the same properly with reference to the record-sheet, the record-sheet must be shifted rearwardly by pulling the inserter handle forwardly to its stop. The cards are then inserted behind the platen or collated between the platen and the record-sheet.
ln order to insure proper positioning or collating of the cards with reference to the record-sheet, and also to prevent slipping of the cards with reference to the recordsheet as the latter is carried forward by the platen to the proper position for typing, provision is made of suitable means to gage. the cards at the rear of the platen and to assist in carrying the leading ends of the cards between the rear feed-rolls and the platen as the record-sheet is advanced by the platen when the latter is actuated by the inserter handle. To this end, provision may be made of a collating plate forming part of a bail, the two arms of which are pivoted to the ends of the platen-frame near the front thereof, so that, when the bail is swung down to the rear, the collating plate thereof will extend across the rear paper-table and be positioned above the same.

Provision inay also be made ot suitable stopping means to prevent the bail troni being depressed to too great an extent in inserting` the cards, and provision inay also be made ot suitable ineans on the bail and the carriage whereby the bail niay be supported when swung forwardly.
Ubviously, the card-inserting` device inay also be used occasionally to insert cards when no record-sheet is to be used. Single cards in ay be used, or superposed cards with earbons interleaved between the saine. ln order to obtain a carbon copy on the card when a record-sheet is used, preferably a carbon-sheet of the saine size as the card is attached thereto by any suitable ineans or placed loosely thereon and both set against the top and side gages on the collating` plate.

ln practice, the mechanism may be used in the following manner: A record-sheet is introduced over the rear paper-table 67 and its Yforward or leading edge is brought into contact with the feed-rolls GS shown in Figure The handle 2l may then be swung to the position shown in Figure (i, thus advancing the record-sheet 70 around the platen. lli/hen the handle 2l reaches this position, the tooth 2l; is with drawn from the gear 2', as hcreinbeiore described, and the platen 'l1 is tree to be shifted by one of the tinger-wlieels 1,8 and 62 or by the line-space lever 19 to bring the record-sheet 70 into position to begin typing. The handle 2l is again connected with the gear or wheel 27 and swung to its forward position, feeding the record-sheet 70 rearwardly to the position shown in Figure 7. A card 7l is then inserted in front of the cross-bar 83 and its leading edge carried down into engagement with the rear feed-rolls 68, the upper end ot the card 7l being placed under one ot the turned-over portions or end gages S, the springs 97 and l0() holding the bail in such a position as to facilitate the insertion of the card 7l under the corresponding end gage Sel. rlhe card 71 is also brought into engagement with one of the side 85 or Sli. lf two cards are used, another card 7l may also be placed in position under the other end gage 84. lt may be noted, among other things, that the collating device is at the intake side ot the platen, and comprises the shelt` G7 eX- tending upwardly in rear ol" the platen, and receiving the condensed record-sheet 70, which is inserted between the feed-roll GS and the platen, and that the collating device also comprises the collating plate 83 arranged on edge intermediate said shelf and the platen, and that the cards or workpieces 7l with their carbone 72 are adjusted on said intermediate collating plate e?) with reference to the condensed record-sheet 70 which is upon said paper-shelf 67, so that, when successive cards 7l are introduced and withdrawn, the corresponding typed impressions will follow one another properly on said condensed record-sheet, which remains in the machine. It may also be noted that the intermediate plate 83 has at its top edge a gage 84 against which the card or work-piece 7l and the carbon 72 are trued up when they are presented in inverted condition (Figure 7), between the platen and the rcondensed record-sheet. Having thus described my invention, l claim:
l. ln a trl'mtstrike typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble pl n and a feeds-oli, ot a work-collating device, coni- ]nfising a shell extending upwrfirdly in rear ot the platen and rereivinel a condensed record-sheet inserted lietween the feed-roil and platen, and also comprising a cci iting plate on odge intermediate said shell" and the platen upon which adjusted a card or work-piece with a carbon therefor, said intermediate plate having at its top edge a gage against which the work-piece and carbon are trued up when presented in inverted condition between the platen and the condensed recorclsheet, said plate being mounted to be swung forwardly clear of the platen to give access to the typed and returned card for removing the same from the machine.
2. An attachment for a typewriting machine, comprising a bail having arms to be pivot-ed on the ends ol: the platen-frame over the liront side of the platen to swing at the intake side, and a flat cross-bar connecting said arms, an end gage forming part ot said cross-bar andV perpendicular thereto at its upper edge to gage the upper end of a card to be inserted at the rear ol the platen, and a side gage adjustably mounted on the cross-bar to engage a side edge ol' said card.
3. An attachment 'for a typewriting machine, comprising a bail having arms to be pivoted on the ends of the plateirframe over the front side oi the platen to swing the intake side, and a l'lat cross-bar connecting said arms, an end gage forming part of said cross-bar and perpendicular thereto at its upper edge to gage the upper end of a card to be inserted at the rear of the platen, a side gage adjustably mounted on the cross-bar to engage a side edge of said card, said cross-bar, being cut away at its upper edge to p lrmit the card to be grasped at its upper edge while being placed in gaged position, and oard.-controlling f extending from said cross-bar at its lower edge, to guide and control `the card during insertion and removal ot same from the machine.

An attachment for a typewriting inachine, comprising a bail having arms to be pivoted on the ends oit the platen-trame over the front side of the platen to swing at the intake side, and a lat cross-bar having two end gages perpendicular thereto at its upper edge and symmetrically positioned on opposite sides of the middle of said cross bar, said cross-bar being cut out between said end gages to permit cards gaged by the latter to be grasped at their upper ends.
7. An attachment for a typewriting machine, comprising a bail having arms to be pivoted on the ends ot the platen-traine over the :tront side of the platen to swing at the intake side, and a flat cross-bar having two end gages perpendicular thereto at its upper edge and symmetrically positioned on opposite sides of the middle of' said crossbar, said cross-bar being cut out between said end gages and also adjacent the outer end of each ot said enc gages to permit cards gaged by the latter to be grasijied at their upper ends.
8. An attachment 'for a typewriting machine, comprising a bail having arms to be pivotecl on the ends ot the platendirame over the iront side of the platen to swing at the intake side, and a Hat cross-bar having two end gages perpendicular thereto at its upper edgeand symmetrically positioned on opposite sides ot the middle of said cross-bar, said cross-bar being cut out between said end gages to permit cards gaged by the latter to be grasped at their ripper ends7 and a side gage on Said Cross-bar adjacent the outer end oit each of said end gages.
