a citizen of the United States, residing in Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collating devices,
or devices for effecting proper relative positioning of a plurality of work-sheets, and is in the nature of an improvement on my co-pending application, SerialNo. 375,676,

The mechanism disclosed in said co-pending application is designed for work in which typewritten impressions of names and addresses, or other entries, are made close together on a record-sheet, and at greater distances apart on a form or bill-strip, one address or entry being placed on each bill or form. The said mechanism is so arranged that, in order to obtainthe desiredresult, the record-sheet and the bill-strip areintroduced with the record-sheet on the outside, thus necessitating the use of a record-sheet of lighter weight than usual, in order to obtain a suitable carbon impression on the bill, which is to be forwarded to the customer. Also in that mechanism, the record-sheet,
, during the advance of the bill-strip relative thereto, is held against advance movement by .means located adjacent the front paper table, by which the bill-strip is received from the platen, and the position of the bill strip for different bills is determined by means of a spring-pressed register pin adapted to be projected through perforations in the bill-stripinto a perforation in the front sions, and will, therefore, present a better appearance."

The revoluble platen 1 is supported by means of an axle 2 in end walls 3 of a platen frame 4 of the usual Underwood type, and may be turned either by finger-wheels 5,01' by means of a line-space lever 6 acting through a slide 7 and a pawl 7* to actuate a ratchet wheel 8 fixed on said axle 2. The line-space mechanism may be substantially the same as that disclosed in the patent to Frederick A. Hart, No. 1,281,160, dated October 8, 1918.
In use a record sheet 9 and a bill stri 10, consisting of a series of detachable bil s of the same length, are passed over a rear paper-table 11 and'between the platen and rear feed-rolls 12 and front feed-rolls 13, which may be released during such insertion, the record sheet being placed next to the platen. The leading edge of the record sheet may be gaged by means of arms 14 and 15 having aligned edges with which the leading edge of the record sheet may be brought into coincidence, and the position of the record sheet transversely of the machine may be determined by a side edge gage 16 adjustably secured to one of said arms, preferably 15, b means of a screw 17 extending through a s ot in said arm 15.

Said papertable 18 may be supported by means of a bar 21 to which it may be secured by means of screws 22, the bar 21 being supported by brackets 23 provided with flanges or plates 24, which may be connected with the platen frame by means of screws 25. The release of the feed-rolls may be effected by means of a feed-roll release lever 26 acting through mechanism similar to that disclosed in said patent to Hart No. 1,281,160. i
The feed-rolls 12 and 13 may be restored to normal position by means of the feed-rollrelease lever 26, and a name and address or other entry then printed by means of typebars 27 through a ribbon, not shown, on the bill strip 10, and a carbon copy made on the record sheet 9 by means of an interleaved carbon 28. The worksheets may be advanced after the writing of each line by means of line-space lever 6,'the last actuation of the latter carrying the recordsheet into position to receive the first line of a new name or address. It will then be necessar to advance the form-strip until the next bi l is properly ositioned to receive a new name and ad ress.
In preparation for such movement of the bill strip, a handle 29 isdrawn forward from the position shown in Figure 3 to the position shown in Figure 5, thereby permitting,
at each'side of the machine, a presser member 30, carried by lever 31,..to be pressed against the reartable 11 by means of a s ring 32, which tends to turn said lever 31 a out its pivot 33, and releasing a pin 34 to the control of a spring 35, which urges the same in a, direction to enter perforations 36 and 37 in thepaper-table 18 and in a finger or arm38 projecting from the side edge ga e 20, so-' as to permit the margin of the bill strip to be inserted between said finger and said paper-table 18. Upon reference to Figures 4 and 5, it will be evident that the pin 34 when released will be restrained by the bill strip as indicated in Figure 4, and that when the bill strip is advanced to the proper extent as determined by a perforation therein, the pin 34 will be permitted to advance to the position indicated in Figure 5.
The feed-rolls 12 and 13 may then be cast off by means ofthe lever 26, and the bill strip 10 grasped by the operative and drawn forward until a perforation in the next form or bill is broug t into register with perforations 36 and 3 thereby permitting the projection of pin 34 through the perforation in said form. It should be understood that during such forward movement of. the bill .strip, the record sheet is gripped between the presser members 30 and the rear papertab1e 11 and held against advance move-. ment. The handle 29 may then be returned to the position shown in Figure 3, thereby withdrawing )resser members 30 from the rear paper-ta 1e '11 by means of links 39, one of which connects said handle 29 with the lever 31, and retracting said pin 34 to the rear of said paper-table 18 by means of an arm 40 fixed on a rock-shaft 41 to which said handle 29 is also fixed, and having a forked end embracing said pin 34, which is provided with a head 42 to enable such retraction by means of arm 40. It will be seen that the link 39 at the right (Figure 2), is connected with rock-shaft 41 by means of an arm 41 fixed on the latter. The work-sheets will be positioned for the printing of another name and address which may be effected after restoration of feed-rolls 12 and 13 to effective position. The operation just described may be repeated as many times as there are forms remaining in the bill strip.
Preferably the pin 34 is supported and guided by a cylindrical casing 43, secured to the back of the paper-table 18, and rovided with an opening in its head in which the pin has a sliding fit. The bore of this cylinder is of sufficient size to receive a collar 44 on pin 34, between which, and the head of the casing the spring 35 is supported on the pin.
It will be seen that springs 32 associated with levers '31 and spring 35 associated with in 34 tend to throw the handle 29 forward rom the position shown in F igure 3, m which it is retained durin the writlng of a name and address. For the purpose of retaining the handle in its rearward position, prbvislon may be made of a leaf spring 4:5 fixed on said handle at one end, and provided at its other end with apin 46 having a rounded head adaptedto operatively engage ina depression 47 in the adj acent bracket 23, the relation-between the head of the pm 46 and the depression 47- being such that the pin will ride out of the depression when the handle 29 is drawn forward.
It should be understood that presser members 30 and pin34 ma be used in connection with the ori inal posltioning of the recordsheet and bi -strip. After casting off feedrolls 12 and 13, the record-sheet 9 and the bill-strip 10 with the carbon-sheet therebetween are introduced between theplaten and the feed-rolls, and the record-sheet and carbon-sh'eet passed beneath the front papertable and a rock-shaft 41, the leading edge of the record-sheet being gaged' by means of arms 14 and 15. Handle 29 may then be drawn forward and the record-sheet gripped tioned by the leading-edge gage 19. Obvi-' ously the leading-edge age 19 maybe dispense d with and the p51 34 used for this purpose.
It will be seen that the arrangement of the parts herein disclosed not only enables a ribbon-impremion to be made on the blll-strlp, but also, inview of the arrangement of the grippin devicesto co-operate with the rear paper-ta 1e, and of the posltionmg of the side edge gage 16, so as to project downwardly from the supporting arms 15, the;
greater part of the mechanism is included between the end walls ofthe platen-frame whereby a very comp-act arrangement of the parts is obtained. I
Although the strip 10 has usually been; referred toherein as. a bill-strip and the entries as names and addresses, it is obvious that the strip may be composed of other forms, and the entries may be other than names and addresses.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portionsof the improvements may be' used without others. Having thus described my invention, I
' claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a rear paper-table re m over which superposedw'ork-sheets may be fed to the platen, means to receive said work-sheets from the delivery side of the platen, a device to co-operate with the rear paper-table to hold one of said work-sheets near one of its side edges, so that a second work-sheet with its corresponding side edge positioned to clear said device may be drawn forward with reference to the work-sheet so held, and means for automatically arresting the second work-sheet when it has been advanced to a predetermined position. 1 2. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a rear paper-table over which superposed work-sheets may be fed the platen, means to receive said work-sheets from the delivery side of the platen, a member to co-operate with said a finger-piece, means whereby said member may be'withdrawn from effective position by means of said finger-piece, means whereby said finger-piece may be latched in position with said member in withdrawn position, and means for automatically arresting another work-sheet when advanced to a predetermined position,
3. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, means to feeds. record sheet and a second sheet to the platen, the record sheet lying next the platen, means whereby the leading edge of the record sheet may be gaged, a'paper-table-to receive said second sheet, said paper-table having a perforation adapted to register, with' perforear paper-table to hold one of said sheets,
rations in said second sheet, a spring-pressed pin positioned to be projected through the perforation in the paper-table, and a memher having a perforation in register with that in the paper-table, said member serving to maintain said second sheet in proximity to said paper-table, so that said second sheet may prevent said pin from entering the perforation in said member until said second sheet is advanced to bring a perforation therein in registration with the perforation in said member.
4. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a rear paper-table for delivering a record sheet and a second sheet to the platen, a second paper-table to receive said second sheet from the platen, a device associated with said rear paper-table to hold said record sheet against advance movement, and means to prevent further movement of said second sheet when the ,latter-has been advanced toa position determined by the configuration of said second sheet.
5. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a rear paper-table for delivering a record sheet and a second sheet to the platen, a second paper-table to receivesaid second sheet from the platen, a device associated with said rear'paper-table to hold said record sheet against advance movement, means to prevent further movement of said second sheet when the latter has been advanced to a position determined by the configuration of said second sheet, and means for concomitantly rendering said holding device and said preventing means ineffective.
6. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a paper-table, a side edge gage associated with said table, a member adjacent said gage and overhanging said paper-table, but spaced therefrom so as to permit the insertion of a work-sheet therebetween, said paper-table and said member having perforations in register with each other, a pin adapted to project through said perforations and enter perforations in the work-sheet when the latter is properly positioned, springmeans yieldably urging said pin to pro ecting position, but permitting said pin to be restrained by said work-sheet, and means to retract said pin below the level of the paper-table to permit a sheet to be inserted between said paper-table and said member.
7. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a rear paper-table for delivering two superposed work-sheets to the platen, a device associated with said rear paper-table to hold one of said sheets against movement when desired, means at the delivery side of the platen to engage in perforations made in the second sheet at intervals, and means to render said device and engaging means effective and ineffective concomitantly.
8. In a typewriting machine, a papertable having a perforation, a pin yieldingly urged to project therethrough to the paperguiding side of said table, and means to prevent separation of a work-sheet from said paper-table by said yieldingly urged pin, whereby said pin will be maintained in depressed position until said sheet isadvanced to a position with a perforation therein over the perforation in said table, whereupon said pin will be projected through the sheet to properly position the same.
9. In a worksheet-positioning device for typewriting machines, in combination, a paper-table, a side edge gage on said paper- -tabIe, an arm extending from-said gage over said paper-table and spaced therefrom. sufficiently to permit insertion of the edge of a work-sheet, said paper-table and said arm having perforations in register, a pin supported behind said table in alignment with said perforations, and means to yieldingly urge said pin through said perforations, whereby the work-sheet passed between said arm and said paper-table may prevent the advance of saidpi n until the advance of the work-sheet causes a perforation therein to be brought into position to permit advance of said pin.
I 10. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a'paper-table 'for guiding work-sheets to the platen, a second paper-table to receive work-sheets from the platen, a device associated with the firstmentioned paper-table to hold a work-sheet against advance movement, a device associated with the second paper-table .to co-operate with a work-sheet of special configuration to prevent further advance thereof after the latter has been advanced to a predetermined extent, and means whereby both of said devices may be made effective or ineffective.
11. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a paper-table for guiding work-sheets to the platen, a second paper-table to receive work-sheets from the platen, a device associated with the firstmentioned paper-table to. hold a work-sheet against advance movement, a device associated with the second paper-table to cooperate with a work-sheet of special configuration to prevent further advance thereof after the latter has been advanced to a predetermined extent, and means for concomitantly rendering said devices effective and ineffective.
12. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, means to deliver work-sheets thereto, means to receive worksheets from said platen, a gripping device to hold a work-sheet against the rear papertable to prevent advance movement thereof, spring means urging said presser member to effective position, a pin mounted so as to permit projection thereof through a perfor. ation in the front paper-table, spring means yieldingly urging said pin to projected position, and means to retain said presser member and said pin in ineffective positions.
14. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a rear papertable, a front paper-table, a resser memher to hold a work-sheet against the rear spring means yieldingly urging said pin to projected position, and means for concomaaaejeer itantly withdrawing said presser member and pin to ineffective positions,

16. In a typewritin machine, in combination, a revoluble p aten, a rear papertable to deliver superposed work-sheets with interleaved carbons to the platen,-a front paper-table to receive work-sheets from the platen, means for controlling said worksheets to efi'ect printing of certain entries close together on a record sheet and spaced at greater intervals on a form sheet, including means associated with the rear papertable adapted to hold the record sheet, and means associated with the front papertable' adapted to (Lo-operate with said form sheet, but ineffective to' prevent advance movement thereof until the form sheet has been advanced to a position to receive another entry thereon, and means to render said holding means and said co-operating means ineffective. v
17. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, a rear papertable to deliver superposed work-sheets with I interleaved carbons to the platen, afront paper-table to receive work-sheets from the platen, means for. controlling said worksheets to effect printing of certain entrles close together on a record sheet and spaced at greater intervals on a form sheet, including means associated with the rear papertable adapted to hold the record sheet, and means associated with the front aper-table adapted to co-operate with said orm sheet, but ineffective to prevent advance movement thereof until the form sheet has been advanced to a position to receive another entry thereon, a handle, and means controlled by said handle for renderlng said holding means and said co-operating means inefl'ective.

In a typewriting machine, in combinatlon, a revoluble platen, means to guide two work-sheets and an interleaved carbon sheet thereto, and sheet-controlling means includmg means to grip the inner sheet and hold the same against movement and mechanism permitting movement of the outer sheet until it isiadvanced to a position determined by then holding the latter against advance movement.
22. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, means to guide two work-sheets and an interleaved carbon thereto, means to grip the inner sheet to hold the same against movement, and means to co-operate with the outer sheet, permitting the latter to be advanced to a position determined by the configuration of said outer 1: sheet and then holding the same.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, means to present two work-sheets and a carbon sheet placed therebetween to the platen, a paper-table positioned to receive the outer sheet when-led upwardly from the delivery side of the platen, said paper-table being spaced from the platen sufficiently to enable the carbon sheet and inner work-sheet to be passed therebetween, fingers beneath which the inner sheet is passed at the rear of said paper-table, and which are used in gaging the leading edge of said inner sheet,'a side edge gage adjustably mounted on one of said fingers and projecting downwardly therefrom, and means for gripping said inner work-sheet to hold the same against move mentto enable the outer sheetto be advanced relatlvely thereto.
26. In a typewriting machine, in combina- 40 tion, a revoluble platen, paper-tables on the 'dellvery'and .receiving sides respectively of the platen, means for controlling two superposed work-sheets to effect printing of certain entries simultaneously on both sheets .but at different intervals, including means associated with one of said paper-tables whereby one of said sheets may be held 7 Work-sheets and an interleaved carbon-sheet therearound, means to grip one of said sheets at one side of the platen to hold the same against movement, means to co-operate with the other sheet at the other side of the platen permitting the latter sheet to be shifted longitudinally to a position determined by its configuration, and then holding the same, and means whereby said gripping means and 'said co-operating means may be made effective and ineffective concomitantly.
