BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
Application filed April 8, 1915. Serial No. 19,924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR DUARTE, a citizen of the Republic of Brazil, and a resident of Rio de J aneiro, Brazil, fiouth America, have invented a new and Improved Building Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are the following: to provide a construction of the character mentioned, wherein the supporting walls are completely formed and an chored by masonry; to provide matched parts which may be assembled and when assembled anchored in service by means of a pouring, setting cement and key members through which the settinggcement extends.
Drawinga-Figure l is a perspective view of a building construction, the parts whereof are formed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale, showing the side wall of the building and a portion of the roof and of the foundation therefor; and Fig. 3 is a detail view in horizontal section on a magnified scale, showing the method of forming the side wall and corner of a construction such as described and means employed for setting in the said wall, a frame for a window or door opening.
Desmiption.-The building is preferably provided with a concrete monolithic foundation 8. The foundation 8 is provided at suitable intervals with upwardly opening holes to receive cement when poured thereinto from above. Directly upon the foundation 8 is laid the first tier of pilaster blocks 9 and the first tier of corner blocks 10. The blocks 9 and 10 are provided with vertical grooves 11, into which are slid from above the outer wall tiles 12, which extend between the blocks 9 and the blocks 9 and 10. Between each of the tiles 12, are disposed lining blocks 13. The lining blocks 13 have formed therein lateral grooves 14. The blocks 13 give to the outer wall a desired finish and furnish reinforcing members for the structure. The tiles 12 and blocks 9 and 10 being set, the second tier of said blocks 9 and 10 is placed in position to form holding members for the second tier of blocks 13 and tiles 12. The lower tiers of the inner facing slabs 15 are now placed in position, the blocks 9 having an undercut groove 16 to receive the chamfered edges of the slabs 15. When thus disposed between two of the blocks 9 the chamfered edges of the slabs 15 hold the same firmly in position. Each of the corner blocks 10 have formed at one corner thereof, a rabbet 17 to receive the ad-,
acent and abutted chamfered edges of the slabs 15 forming the interior corner of the structure, as best seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This method of construction is continued until the level of the eaves or edge of the roof is attained. Suitable arrangement is made in the placing of the blocks 9 for the insertion of window and door frames 18. To hold the frames 18 in service, a ground or furring strip 19 is placed in the exposed grooves 11. and 14 of the'blocks 9 and 13, surrounding the said window or door opening. \Vhen the frame is installed as indicated, fasteners such as nails or screws are driven through the side of the frame into the furring strip 19, thereafter maintaining the frame and parts connected therewith firmly in the building structure.
While I have herein shown the blocks 13 as devoid of ornament, it will be understood that these may be varied at will and that the blocks 9 and 13 surrounding the window or door openings may have molded or cast thereon ornamental features of any desired nature. The same may be said of the tiles 12, which as shown in the drawings, are absolutely plain. It will be understood, however, that any desired or suitable form of ornamentation may be imparted either in relief or in coloring to the exposed surface of said tiles.
When the side walls have been completed, it will be found that the holes 20 with which each block is provided, register, the blocks being directly superposed. Also it will be found that the holes 20 in the blocks 9 and 10 register with the holes 21 in the foundation 8. This arrangement having been effected the holes anchoring columns 22 are formed therein, said columns extending from the bottom of the holes 21 to the coping or top of the side walls. Each of the columns is homogeneous and is formed by liquid cement from above into the said open-. ings. YVhen the cement thus poured sets, the columns 22 become rigid and well able to,
.prevent the subsequent shifting of any of pouring The columns 22 having been formed inthe manner stated, the side walls or facades of the building are finished by mounting thereon a molded gutter 23. The gutter 23 is suitably anchored in position and rests against the ends of the purlins 24, forming the base of the roof trusses 25. The roof trusses 25 are properly sheathed to receive a covering 26 of any suitable character. It will be noted that between the inner and outer surfaces'of the top tier of blocks 13, as shown best in Fig. 2 of thedrawings, a ledge is provided, upon. which rest theends of the purlins 24.
To support the floor boards 27 floor beams or wooden joists 28 are employed. The end of the joists 28 rest on the wood sills 29, the ends of the wood sills in turn resting on square molded cement pillars 30. The pillars 30 are supported upon inset footings 31, with which the foundations 8 is provided at the cornersor locations, where it is designed the said pillars should rest. The details of finish of the house, the division of the structure by partitions into rooms or other spaces, is a matter of individual taste or requirement and as such do not require exposition 1n the present application.
Claim:
A construction as characterized comprising, a plurality of segmental superposed blocks having laterally disposed vertical grooves and centrally disposed open-ended passages a plurality of facing tiles adapted for extension within, to be held by said lateral grooves of said blocks; an anchoring column disposed insaid passages, said column being formed from a pouring setting material and introduced within said passages after the said blocks are disposed in service relation; a plurality of inner facing slabs structurally connected with said blocks to form a flush surface therewith; frames for openings in the walls of said construction; and means adapted tohave said frames fastened thereto, said means being dis osed' within the grooves of said blocks, asa lling therefor.
