PORTABLE DISPLAY FRAME.
APPUCATION FILED JAN-21,1915- Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH co., WASHINGTON, n. c.
@TATE% MORRIS SMERNOFF, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
PORTABLE DISPLAY-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
Application filed. January 21, 1915. Serial No. 3A71.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Monte SMERNOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Display-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a view in front elevation of one form of a portable display-frame constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 a view thereof in transverse section on the line 06-?) of Fig. 1, this view being drawn on an enlarged scale. Fig. at a detached view of the metal reinforce of the frame. Fig. 5 a view in front elevation of one of the modified forms which the frame may assume.
My invention relates to an improvement in portable display-frames designed to be used for advertising cards, notices, pictures, mirrors, &c., the object being to provide a simple, compact, durable, sanitary and convenient display-frame constructed with particular reference to being unaffected by exposure to strong sun light as in a show window, to steam, moisture, 81c, and adapted to be easily washed or wiped clean without hurting the finish.
With these ends in View, my invention consists in a portable display-frame having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a rectangular one-piece cast-metal reinforce 2 of semi-circular crosssection, this reinforce being substantially embedded, flat side forward, ina one-piece molded rectangular frame 3 made of initially plastic material, such as glass, porcelain or other composition adapting it to be made in one piece and to be molded about the metal reinforce 2 so as to virtually contain the same. As herein shown, the rounded inner face of the reinforce 2 is tapped for the reception of short screws or studs 5 passing through holes molded in the one-piece frame 3 for their clearance. The said screws 5 mount pivotal retaining fingers 7 which are swung upon them into and out of engagement with a mirror or picture or card, or whatever may be placed in the frame which is formed with a rabbet or recess 8 over which the outer ends of the said fingers 7 extend. As herein shown, the frame 3 is provided with amirror 9 having a backing 10, but I do not limit myself to any one use of the frame which is available for use for pictures, cards, notices, mirrors, &c.
The frame 11 shown in Fig. 5, corresponds in every detail of construction to the frame shown in Figs. 1 to t inclusive, but is oval in form.
It will be readily understood that my improved frame being made of glass, porcelain, or other suitable initially plastic composition may be washed or wiped ofi without injury and is substantially unaffected by heat, light and moisture. The embedded reinforce 2 gives it the required strength and provides means to which retaining and suspension devices may be readily applied.
1 claim In a portable display frame, the combination with a one-piece molded frame of initially plastic material, having its inner edge formed with a continuous rabbet, of a metal reinforce embedded in said initially plastic material so as to be completely inclosed thereby, the said reinforce being formed at intervals in its rear face with threaded holes, and the said frame being formed at its back with openings in line with said threaded holes, studs mounted in said threaded holes and projecting through the back of the frame, and retaining fixtures swiveled upon the said studs and adapted to co-act with said rabbet in holding a picture, card, or other object in place therein.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS SMERNOFF.
