Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
Original application filed January 16, 1908, Serial No. 411,156. Patented July 28, 1914, No. 1,105,571. Divided and this application filed March 21,1914. Serial No. 826,233.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERT C. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of. Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Books or Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for fastening the sheets of books together.
The invention has for its object to produce a novel form of staple which extends through and operates to clamp the slips together at all times.
This application is a division of my application, Serial No. 411,156, filed January 16, 1908, Patent No. 1,105,571, dated July 28, 1914.-
For the purpose of illustration, I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and described one form of fastening means for books or pads embodying my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book or pad embodying my invention, the covers of the book and two slips being open. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the book with one cover broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the book. Fig. at is a section on the line H of Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastening means.
In the drawings, 2 indicates a suitable base or back. The base or back 2 is preferably extended at its opposite ends to form covers 2, 2", which fold over and upon the pad when it is not in use.
3 indicates the sheets or slips constituting the pad. In the form of pad illustrated, each sheet or slip 3 may be folded along a transverse line 3 (which line is preferably unweakened) intermediate its ends to form two slips 3 3, which may constitute a set of slips. The line of fold for each sheet is arranged relative to its opposite ends so that when the sheet is folded, the slip 3 will be shorter than the slips 3*. It will thus be seen that the free ends of the slips 3* extend beyond the free ends of the slips 3 to provide sections which may be secured to the back 2.
and thus hold the sets of slips in pad form. As I have shown my invention as adapted for use in account keeping systems, each slip may be suitably ruled (see Fig. 2) for re cording a transaction.
At 4 each sheet 3 is weakened, preferably by a line of perforations'to permit the separation of the slip 3 The weakened line 1 may be arranged closely adjacent and parallel to the line'of fold 3 so as to leave a short folded over section 3 attached to the slip 3 5 indicates the transfer means for transferring the record written on one slip to the next slip below it. The means preferably comprise a sheet of carbon, attached in a well known manner along one edge to the back 2 and adapted to be positioned between the slips 3 3 of each set as they are successively used. The carbon sheet 5 is preferably cut-away at one corner, as shown at 5, to expose one upper corner of each slip 3, as shown in Fig. l.
6 indicates the means for fastening or'se curing the slips 3* together in pad form and to the back 2. The fastening means preferably comprises a staple having a base 6 engaging the back 2, and upwardly and outwardly extending prongs or limbs, 6 6*, the free ends 6, 6, of which are bent in opposite directions downwardly into engagement with the uppermost slip 8 As will be understood from the drawings, the limbs 63* extend through the slips 3" at diverging angles and thus act upon each succeeding slip to secure it to slips below it and to the back. As a result of this construction, the sets of slips 3, 3 may be removed or detached from the top of the pad one after the other without the possibility or likelihood of the slips beneath creeping up on the arms or limbs 6 of the staple, or becoming loose on the back 2.
At T the cover 2 is preferably folded on parallel lines on itself to form a name carrying section, which section, when the cover 2 is closed or folded on top of the pad, exposes to view the name of the person to whom the pad belongs or is assigned, as will be well understood by those accustomed to keeping accounts.
At 8 the cover 2* is formed With an opening. This opening is so arranged that when the'cover is closed, it permits the amount of the transaction previously recorded on a set of slips to be exposed to view.
In the ordinary operation of the sales book which I have herein described, the total amount of the previous transaction is recorded uponthe folded-over section 3 which is attached to the slip 3. As the folded over section of the last used set of slips is always folded over the sections 3 of the prior used slips, it will be seen that the amount of theit will be seen that by reason of their divergence, the limbs will operate to hold'the slips of the pad together even in the event the free ends 6 thereof'are broken off by acci dent or otherwise.
To those skilled in the art of making de vices of the class described, various alterations in construction and difi'ering embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
My disclosures and the description herein 'ing a base engaging wlth and extending across a portion of the back of the pad and limbs connected to and extending from the opposite ends of the base in a direction iiiclined relative thereto and diverging from each other, whereby the slips remaining in the pad are bound together irrespective of the removal of the uppermost slip or slips, the free ends of said limbs being bent laterally in opposite directions into engagement 7 with the top of the pad.
2. In a manifolding book, the combination of a series of superposed slips, and a device for binding the slips together in pad form having a base engaging the back of the pad and limbs connected to the opposite ends of the base and extending through the slips, the said limbs being inclined relative to the base and diverging from each other at their free ends, whereby they cooperate to bind the slips together and prevent the slips from riding upwardly on said limbs.
In testimony whereof I my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
