To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALVAH C. ROEBUCK and ADoLPH J. PRUSZYNSKI, citizens of the United States, residing at Woodstock, in the county of Mcl-lenry and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ribbon-Vibrators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriters in general and ribbon vibrators in particular, and is designed to provide simple, effective and durable improvements in mechanisms of this character.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be apparent hereinafter, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wlierein Figure 1 is a sectional view of a typewriter, illustrating the ribbon vibrator forming the subject-matter of the present invention as attached thereon; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shift rail, illustrating the cooperation thereof with the ribbon vibrator and the vibrator control; Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the vibrating mechanism, illustrating the cooperation thereof with the shift rail and the universal bar frame; Fig. 4c is a plan view of the ribbon vibrator; Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section taken along the line 55 of Fig. a, parts thereof being eliminated; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the vibrator control showing the elements thereof adjusted for the operation of a polychrome ribbon on one section or color thereof; Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the elements set for operation on he other section of color of the ribbon; Fig.

The present invention is designed primarily to provide a polychrome attachment for typewriters, particularly that class of typewriters designated as visible. Provision is also made for the utilization of the entire width of the ribbon, that is to say, in connect on with a ribbon it is possible to adjust the vibrator to utilize any one of a plurality of printing zones on the ribbon. This adjustment of the ribbon vibrator is also adaptable to the polychrome ribbon, making it possible to create a plurality of printing zones in each section of the ribbon by reversing the ribbon in the frisket.
Under normal conditions, to-wit, when the ribbon is being used in both colors. the vibrator may be adjusted as in Figs. 6 and 7 to throw the ribbon to one of two positions with respect to the printing line for the determination of the color or section of the ribbon to be used. However, as one color or section of the ribbon receives the major portion of the wear, the present invention contemplates an adjustment of the control whereby, when this section of the ribbon is being used, any one of a plurality of distinct, substantially parallel printing zones may be created on that section of the ribbon (Figs. 8 and 9) any one of said zones being capable of selection and use. If a single color ribbon is used, the same may be reversed in the frisket, thereby making it possible to utilize one of a plurality of distinct printing zones in halves or sections of the ribbonin other words, use the entire ribbon.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates generally a typewriter provided with a universal bar frame 11 operated in any suitable manner from the key or type action. Located in the usual manner is a shift frame or rail 12, provided with the rods 13 and 14, the rod 13 acting as the pivot rod of the frame or rail. The shift rail is designed to shift the carriage 15 from the lower to the upper case in the well-known and usual manner. A. frisket 16 is provided, which is mounted for reciprocation across the printing point of the platen mounted in the carriage, and is adapted to carry the ribbon 17 across the printing point during such reciprocation. A bracket 17 is centrally interposed between the rods 13 and 14 of the shift frame, and is secured to the pivot rod 13 of said shift rail at the rear terminal thereof. A dependent hearing 21 is formed or secured to the bracket frame 12. A toothed segment 23 is keyed to the terminal of the shaft 22 adjacent to the bracket 17' and is adapted to be oscillated by the rocking or rotary movement of the: shaft 22. A shaft 24 is mounted in the sides of thesecondary'bracket and car ries a spur gear 25, which'meshes with the geared segment 23 carried by ,the'shaft 22. The end of this shaft '24 1s 'DIOVlClQCl with an eccentric pin 26 at the terminal thereof, the utility of which will be hereinafter {more fully described. A- standard 27 is mounted upon the universal bar frame 11 and is conla nected at its upper terminal to the link 28.
This link 28 has a pivotal connection at its oi'iterterininal with the lever 29 which is centrally pivoted upon the shaft 24. A vibrating lever 30, which carries the frisket 16 at its outer terminahis pivoted between its ends upon the pin 31 located at the. lower terminal of the lever 29. The upper terminal of this vibrating lever 30 is bifurcated. as at 32, for the reception of the eccentric pin 26. V 7
From the foreging, it will be seen that as the universal bar frame reciprocates, the standard 27 will reciprocate therewith. imparting a pull to the link 28 and oscillating the lever 29 about the shaft 24. This movement of the lever 29 causes the vibrating lever 30 to oscillate about the eccentric pin 26 as a center and reciprocate the frisket and the ribbon17 carried thereby across the printing point. By imparting a rotation or oscillation to the shaft 22, the seg- I ment 23 will receive an equivalent movement, which will be imparted to the gear keyed to the shaft24. The rotation of the gear 25 will consequently rotate the shaft .24, shifting the position of the eccentric pin 26. Any movement of the eccentric pin 26 will oscillate the lever about the pin 31, raising orlowering the frisket 16, as the case maybe. In this manner, the initial position from which the frisket reciprocates is changed,.as the rotation of the shaft/24 raises and lowers the terminal of the lever .30 attached to the frisket,,depending upon the direction of rotation of the shaft.

A bracket 35 is secured to the frame of the typewriter adjacent to the keyboard thereof and is provided with a transverse shaft or bearing 36 mount- A segment 37 ismounted upon piece 38, whereby said segment is oscillated about said bearlng. This segment 1s provided with four teeth, 37, 37, 37, 37 which are'engaged by the leaf spring 39, whereby the segment 37 is retained in any one of four adjusted positions. The second segment 40 is mounted upon the bearing 36 and is provided with the finger piece 41, whereby the segment is oscillated about said bearing. This segment is provided with two teeth 4O and'40, which cooperate with a leaf spring 42, thereby retaining the segment 40 in either oftwo adjusted positions. The. segment 37 is provided with an extension 43 to which is pivoted a link-44, said link being connected at its outer terminal to a .curved lever 45, the upper terminal of which is secured to the outer terminal of thelink '34 by a pivot pin46, which pivot pin extends through .a curved guide 47 formed upon the bracket 35. The lever is provided with a curved slot 48 struck from the bearing 36 as a center, into which extends a pin 49 carried by an extension of the segment 40, which pinactsas a fulcrum for the lever.
It will be seen from the foregoing that as the finger piece 38 is raised or lowered, the segment 37 will be oscillated about the bearing 36, imparting a similar movement to the lever 45 through the link 44, said lever and distinct paths to be utilized upon onehalf of the ribbon when the segment 40 is located as shown in Figs. 8 and 9. 'lVhen the segment 40 is positioned as is illustrated in Figs. 6 and'7, to-wit, when the'finger piece 41 is in its extreme lower position, the segment 37 is adjustable to fourpositions through the medium of the finger piece'38. That is tosay, the finger piece 41 may be conveniently raised to its extreme upward position or lowered to its extreme lower .position, whichmovement causes an oscillation of the lever 45 and consequently a reciprocation of the link 44, which is imparted to the shaft 22. This adjustment of from either of two positions and is adapted for use in multi-color work.
V'vhen the segment 40 is in the position shown in Figs. 8 and 9, to-Wit, when the finger piece 41 is at its extreme upward position, the segment 37 is adjustable to any one of four positions through the medium of the linger piece 38. It will be seen that by changing the position of the segment l0, the upper terminal of the lever 45 connected to the link 44 has substantially one-half of the throw which is normal to it when the segment is in the position shown in Fig. 6. This adjustment limits the reciprocation of the vibration of the ribbon through one-half its width, and consequently the adjustment of the segment 37 through its finger piece 38 to four positions creates four different distinct substantially parallel paths or zones upon one-half of the ribbon. If it is de sired to use the other half of the ribbon in a like manner, the ribbon must be reversed in the frisket. In this manner it is possible to use the present invention in connection with a polychrome ribbon. for use in either color of the ribbon, and also to fully utilize the printing qualities of either half of the ribbon by the creation of a plurality of distinct printing zones or paths in one-half of the ribbon.
A. pedestal 51 is mounted on the universal bar frame 11 and has a standard 52 pivotally connected thereto as at 53. This standard is provided with two extensions 54, one upon each side thereof, which bears against the set screws 55 which are threaded through bushings 56 formed on the universal bar frame 11. The upper terminal of this standard 52 is connected to the link 28, whereby the motion of the universal bar is transmitted to the vibrator lever 30. Under normal conditions, that is to say after the set screws 55 have been adjusted, the standard 52 is a rigid construction and operates as does the standard 27 illustrated in the preferred form in Fig. 3. However, it is possible through the medium of this construction to more readily assemble the typewriter and to secure an adjustment whereby the ribbon frisket may be raised and lowered at will without operating the machine to compensate for such variations as may exist or arise in the manufacture. It also gives an adjustment of the initial point from which the ribbon frisket reciprocates to insure accuracy in the throw of the ribbon. One of the distinct advantages of this arrangement is that in addition to being able to utilize a plurality of distinct printing zones in halves or sections of the ribbon for the purpose of economy, the mechanism can be used for multi-color workig and so set that a complete movement of lever 1 38 from top to bottom or from bottom to top; of the slot is required to make the shift,
that is, even though there is a middle notch in the segment, there need be no intermediate stops while making the shift which enables the operator to make the shift quickly from one color to the other, the lever 88 coming to a stop at the extreme upper or extreme lower point.
We claim:
1. The combination with a ribbon vibrator, of a rotary adjustment shaft connected thereto, and means for operating said adjustment shaft comprising a link, a lever connected to said link, a shiftable fulcrum for said lever, and means for shifting said lever for reciprocating said link and for rotating the shaft aforesaid.
2. The combination with a ribbon vibrator, of an adjustment shaft therefor, and means for adjusting said shaft comprising a link connected to said shaft, a lever connected to said link, a segment capable of a multiplicity of adjustments, a fulcrum for said lever carried by said segment, and means for oscillating said lever to reciprocate said link and adjust the shaft aforesaid.
3. The combination with a ribbon vibrator, of an adjustment shaft therefor, and means for adjusting said shaft comprising a link connected to said shaft, a lever connected to said link, a segment capable of a multiplicity of adjustments, a fulcrum for said lever carried by said segment, a second segment capable of a multiplicity of adjustments, and a connection between said second segment and said lever whereby the adjustment of said second segment will oscillate said lever to reciprocate said link and adjust the shaft aforesaid.

tor, of an adjustment shaft therefor, and means for adjusting said shaft comprising a lever connected to said shaft, a segment capable of a multiplicity of adjustments, a fulcrum for said lever carried by said segment, a second segment capable of a multiplicity of adjustments, and a link connecting said second segment with said lever whereby the oscillation of said second segment will oscillate said lever and adjust the shaft aforesaid.
5. The combination with a ribbon vibrater, of an adjustment shaft. connected thereto, and means for adjusting said shaft, comprising an adjustable segment, a fulcrum carried by said segment, a lever pivoted on said fulcrum so that the movement of said segment adjusts said fulcrum with f respect to said lever, a link pivotally connecting one terminal of said lever to said shaft, a second adjustable segment, and a connection between said second adjustable segment and the opposite terminal of said lever.

The combination with a bracket, of a bearing mounted in said bracket, a primary segment mounted loosely upon said bearing and provided with a plurality of teeth or depressions, a fulcrum carried by said segment, a lever pivoted on said fulcrum so that said. fulcrum may be adjusted with respect to said lever, a-secondary segment provided with teeth or depressions, an extension formed on said secondary segment, a linkconnecting said extension with said lever, and leaf springs cooperating with the. teeth or depressions of said segments whereby the same are retained in their adjusted positions.

The combination with aribbon vibrator, of an adjustment shaft therefor, means for adjusting said shaft comprising a link connected to the shaft, a lever connected to said link, a segment capable of a multiplicity imcaase zofadjustrhents,:a'fulcrum for said lever carried by said segme'nu'a secoudsegment capable of a multiplicity of adjustments, a connection between said second segment and said lever whereby the adjustments of said seccnd segment will oscillate said lever to reciprocate said link and adjust the shaft aforesaid, and means to prevent the lever from bein moved up and down when the said second segment 1s bemg shifted.

The combination with a ribbon vibrator, ofan adjustmentshaft therefor, means for adjusting said shaft comprising a link connected to the shaft, a lever connected to said link, a segment capable of a multiplic-V ityv of adjustments, a fulcrum for said lever carried by said segment, a second segment capable of. a multiplicity of adjustments, a connection between said second segment and one end of said lever whereby adjustment of said second segment will oscillate said lever, anda radially slotted guiderto engage the other end of the lever to which end the link is connected.

The combination with a ribbon vibrator, of an adjustment shaft therefor, means foradjusting said shaft comprising a link ity of adjustments, a fulcrum for said lever carried by said segment, a second segment capable of a multiplicity of adjustments, a connection between said second segment and one end of said lever, and a radially slotted guide having a radius substantially the same as the length of the lever in which guide the other end of said lever engages-t0 prevent the up-and-down movement of the lever when the said second segment is being shifted.
