HAY-RACK FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN REITER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Mitchell and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Hay-Rack Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in means for detachably connecting hay-racks to the bolsters of farm wagons, and the main object of my invention is the provision of a fastening device very simply made, easily applied to the longitudinal sills of a hay rack, and so formed as to engage firmly with the bolsters of a farm wagon and prevent any longitudinal movement of the sills or lateral movement thereof.

A. further object of my invention is to so form the fastening device that it may be adapted for use with bolsters of various depths.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is an elevation of the running gear of a farm wagon, the sills of a hayrack being shown in section and the fastening devices being also shown in section; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastening device.

In order to attach a hay-rack to the ordinary farm wagon it is necessary to remove the wagon body and support the hay-rack upon the bolsters of the wagon.

In the drawings, 2 designates a bolster of an ordinary farm wagon having the up wardly extending posts 3, this bolster 2 being mounted upon the axle 1 in any suitable or usual manner.

The hay-rack is designated generally 1 and includes the longitudinally extending sills 5. Now for the purpose of detachably engaging these sills 5 with the wagon bolster I provide the device shown in Fig. 8. This device comprises a plate 6 perforated at 7 for the passage of bolts 8 whereby it may be attached to a sill 5. Preferably formed integral with this plate 6 is the downwardly extending approximately U- shaped bolster embracing member 9 which is rectangular in form and adapted to be disposed over and embrace the bolster 2. U-shaped member are the extension plates 10 which are formed with a plurality of perforations 11 adapted for the passage of a bolt 12. Bolts 13 which form the means for pivoting the plates 10 to the member 9 may be readily removed and the bolt 12 passed through the perforations for the bolts 13 if desired.

Preferably the plate 6 and the member 9 are formed in one piece of cheap material, as will be evident from Fig. 3. In practice the plate 6 is bolted or otherwise attached to the inner faces of the sills 5. When the hay-rack is disposed upon the bolsters the 5 to move inward will be resisted by the fastening devices which engage so snugly with the bolster as to prevent any inward movement of the sills. Of course where the bolster is relatively shallow in depth the plates 10 need not be used but the bolt 12 may be passed directly through the perforations for the bolts 13. By the provision of the plates 10, however, it is possible to extend the bolster embracing member downward so that the bolt may be disposed below the lower edges of the bolster.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. As an article of manufacture, a hayrack fastener comprising a plate adapted to be disposed against the side face of a hayrack sill and having a laterally projecting portion formed with downwardly depending side portions forming a U-shaped member adapted to fit over and embrace a bolster of a wagon and extending below the bolster, said downwardly extending portions being formed with a plurality of perforations, and a bolt passing through any one of said perforations and adapted to engage beneath the bolster.
