This invention relates to improvements in fastenings for end-gatesof wagons; and it consists in the construction, novel arrangement, and adaptation of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

A indicate the side walls of a wagon-body, which may be of any ordinary construction. The wall A is provided at its rear end with two vertical cleats, a a, between which is an interspace for the reception of one end of the end-gate, as will be presently explained, and the opposite wall, A, is provided with a vertical cleat, b, which forms an inner stop for the opposite end of the gate.

13 B indicate rigid loops or eyes, which are secured by their shanks in the side wall, A, beyond the cleat I), by means of nuts or other suitable fastening devices. These eyebolts or loops, which are vertically disposed, are designed to remain fixed in the said wall, and the end of the gate to be placed against the vertical cleat b is preferably faced with a me tallic strip and notched transversely, as at (Z d, to pass over the said eyes, so that the fastening'hooks may be applied, as will be presently explained. It. should be here observed that I employ two of these loops or eyes, one near the upper and the other near the lower edge of the side wall.

0 indicates a metallic strap, which is secured on the outer side of the wall A by the same D, under the rear edge of the floor of the body, and is secured thereto bya nut, as shown. A similar metallic strip is secured to the outer side of the opposite side wall and is perforated transversely, as at e, for the passage of the threaded shank of an adjustable eye, E. On the shank of this eye or bolt E, I place a levernut, F, which has a bearing against the said strap 0 when in operation, and the cleat a, through which this screweye passes, may be countersunk around its apertures f, as shown, to allow a greater movement and adjustment.

G indicates the endgate, which is provided on its outer side with bearingloops g g, which support a laterally-movable connecting-rod, H. This rod is provided at opposite ends with a loop, h, for the attachment of the locking-hooks. The short hook I at one end of the rod H is designed to engage the eye of the adjustable bolt".

K K indicate two hooks for securing the opposite end of the gate to the body. These hooks are provided with loops or the like at their inner ends and are connected with the laterally-movablerod H by means of a ring, L. By the employment of this ring it will be seen that the large hooks K may have a greater or less curvilinear movement, as well as afree inward and outward movement, which, will add greatly to the convenience and rapidity of movement in applying the same to the eye in the said wall of the body.

This device is very simple in construction. It may be manufactured at a small expense and may be quickly applied to any wagon without materially altering its construction.

In applying the gate to the body one end thereof is first placed in the interspace between the two parallel vertical cleats and rested upon the floor of the body, when the opposite end of the gate is brought forward until engaged by the opposite cleat. The large hooks are then placed in the eyes of the side wall, A, and the smaller hook on the opposite end of the laterally-movable bar at tached to the adjustable screw-eye. Then by simply turning the lever-nut in the proper direction the bar H will be moved laterally and the parts tightened, so as to hold the gate securely in position.
