Description

(No Model) N. KIRGHNER. END GATE FASTBNER.
No. 583,198. Patented May 25,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFToE.
NUNDY KIRCHNER, OF ANTIOCH, MISSOURI.
END-GATE FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,198, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed August 19,1896. Serial No. 603,265. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, NUNDY Kmonnnaa citizen of the United States, residing at Antioch, in' the county of Clark and State of Missouri,
.have invented a new and useful End-Gate Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in end-gate fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of end-gate fasteners and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device which will dispense with a transverse rod for connecting the sides of a wagon body or box and which will be adapted to be readily fastened and unfastened without screwing a nut on or off and capable of ready adjustment to secure the desired degree of tightness.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wagon body and box provided with end-gate fasteners constructed in accordance with this invention, one of the fasteners being shown locked and the other unlocked. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of a portion of the end-gate fastener, the same being locked.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the draw- 1ngs.
1 designates a top box mounted upon a wagon-body 2 in the ordinary manner, and end-gates 3 and 4 of the top box and wagonbody are secured by end-gate fasteners, comprising oppositely-disposed rods 6 and 7 a loop 8, adjustably connected to the inner end of the rod 6, and an operating-lever 9, fulcrumed on the loop, connected with the inner end of the rod 7 and adapted to draw the rods together to cause the sides of the body and box to clamp the end-gates. Each rod is provided at its outer end with a loop 10, engaging hooks 11 of the adjacent side of the box or body, and the hooks 11, which extend transversely of the body and box at the rear ends thereof, are provided with substantially T- shaped attachment-plates 12, secured to the outer faces of the sides of the box and body and consisting of vertical arms and a longitudinal shank, the latter having its forward end extended downward slightly. .This construction of attachment-plates strengthens the parts and is firmly secured in position by boltsor other fastening devices.
The loop 8, which is substantially rectangular, is open at one end and closed at the other, and the closed end is provided with a perforation through which passes the inner end of the rod 6. The inner end of the rod 6 is threaded and receives a nut 13, arranged within the loop adjacent to the closed end thereof and adjustably connecting the rod 6 with the loop. By rotating the rod after it has been disconnected from its hook the de sired adjustment can be obtained.
The inner end 14 of the lever 9 is provided with two sides, preferably formed by bending the metal of the lever 011 itself, as shown, and it receives the inner end of the rod 7 between the said sides, the inner end of the rod 7 being provided with an eye 15 for the reception of a pivot for connecting the rod to the lever.
The outer or handle portion of the lever is curved, as shown, and a hook 16 is provided at the outer end of the lever for engaging the rod 6 to secure the parts when looked, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The lever is located beneath the rod 6 and the loop. It extends downward from the latter, and its curved portion arranges the hook in position for engaging the rod 6. By arranging the rod in this manner the lever swings downward automatically as soon as the hook is released. By swinging the outer portion of the lever upward and engaging its hook with the rod the parts are locked, and by disengaging the hook from the rod the parts are unlocked.
It will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it possesses strength and durability,'and that it will enable an end-gate to be quickly locked and unlocked.
What I claim is-- Y 1. An end gate fastener comprising a straight loop having one end open and the other end closed, the rods 6 and 7 provided at their outer ends with means for detachably engaging the sides of a Wagon-bod y, the inner end of the rod 6 being threaded and engaging a suitable threaded perforation at the closed end of the loop, whereby the rod is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally, and a lever located beneath the loop, fulerumed at its inner end in the open end of the same and pivoted directly to the inner end of the rod 7, said lever being provided at its outer end with a hook adapted to engage over the rod 6, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of a substantially rectangular loop having straight sides open atv one end and provided at its other end with a perforation, the rods 6 and 7 provided at their outer ends with means for engaging the sides of the Wagon-body, the rod (3 havingits inner end threaded and extended through the perforation at the closed end of the loop, a nut loosely arranged Within the loop at the closed end thereof and engaging the threaded end of the rod, and a lever provided at its inner end with twov sides, fulcrumed Within the open end of the loop and connected directly to the inner end of the rod 7, said lever being located beneath the rectangular loop and having its outer portion curved and provided With a hook engaging over the rod 0, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my oWn I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
NUNDY KIROHNER.
