Be it known that I, JACOB R. Hnssnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Hog-T rough; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in feed troughs for hogs, and it has for its object the provision of a simple inexpensive and highly efficient trough of this character which is collapsible in itsnature and capable of being easily and quickly knocked down and set up, and when in its knocked down state to be packed in a compact manner for shipping or storing.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description thereof.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trough in open position embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the trough in open position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the partition members of the trough. Figs. 1 and 5 are crosssections of the trough taken on the lines 0e-w and g y, respectively, in Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the trough with the front thereof open.
Referring to the drawings 1, 1 designate the opposite duplicate end members of the trough, each of which is of single piece construction and preferably in the form of a casting. Each end member 1 is provided on its inner side near its lower edge with an inwardly projecting V-form of flange or ledge 2 whichforms a rest or support for one end of a V-shaped trough 3, which is preferably of sheet metal, the opposite end of the trough being supported by the ledge 2 of the other end member. I A sheet metal partition member or web 7 connects vertically disposed flanges 8 of the two end members at a point substantially midway between the front and rear edges of the trough 3, and terminates at its lower edge in spaced relation to the vertically registering portion ofthe trough. In the present instance the lower edge of the partition 7 terminates in substantially the horizontal plane of the upper front edge of the trough.
A rod 9 connects the two end members 1, 1 at the upper rear edge of the trough 3 and is secured in position by the threading of nuts 10 on the outer ends thereof without the end members. A door or closure 11 preferably of sheet metal is pivotally connected at one edge to the rod 9 to turn about the same as an axis, and is of suitable width to bear at its free edge against the rear side of the partition 7 preferably at a point above the horizontal plane of the pivot 9 when the door is in closed position. The door 9 may be termed the feed door of the trough and when open enables feed to be deposited in the trough at the rear side of the partition 7.
A rod 12 connects the end members 1. 1 at the upper edge of the partition 7 and is secured thereto by nuts 13. A two-section door 14 is hinged at one edge to the rod 12 and when in closed position extends downward and forward on an incline from said rod and adjacent to the upper front edge of the trough 3, and rests at its ends on inclined flanges 15 on the end members 1, l. The two sections a and b of the door 14 are hinged together in a manner to permit an outward breaking or opening thereof, as indicated in the drawings. The front section a is provided at its free edge with a re inforcing rod 16, the ends of which project beyond the ends of the door section and into guide slots 17 in the respective end members. The guide slots 17 run parallel with the flanges 15 from adjacent to the upper front edge of the trough 3 to near the upper ends of said flanges and then curve outward and downward to form return portions which reenter the major portion of the grooves 17 near the lower ends thereof as at 17 The major portions of the groove 17 are provided in the inner walls thereof adjacent to their upper ends with notches in which the ends of the rod-16 seat when the door 14 is in its full open position as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, thereby supporting the door in such open position. When the door is in its open position and it is desired to close the same, a further opening movement thereof will cause the ends of the rod 16 to traverse the upper curved ends of the guide slots 17 and to place them in position to lower by gravity in the returning portion of the groove so that the rod, when near the lower end of the guide slots, will reenter the major portion of the groove 17 and lower into proper resting position therein. An operating handle 18 is fixed to the section Z) of the door 14 and extends transversely thereof with its free end projecting over and beyond the pivot bolt 12-. It is thus evident that when the door is in closed position and a downward pressure is exerted on the lever 18, the door will be raised to the open position shown.
In order that the trough may be divided into stalls of suitable size to receive the head portion of a hog, a plurality of dividing bars 19 are provided therein which bars extend from the upper front edge of the trough rearward on an incline to the partition 7 to which each is secured by a screw 20. The front end of each bar 19 is provided with a plate portion 21 which has its side edges downwardly and outwardly curved to cooperate with the end of an 'adjoining plate to form a head receiving notch for the front portion of each stall of the trough, as indicated. The outer edge of each plate 21 is provided with a downwardly extending flange 22 which laps the outer side of the bar 4 and is secured thereto by a screw 23. The boss 6, which projects from each end member 1 cooperates with the adjacent plate 21 to form the entrance opening to the respective end stall, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
If it is desired to make some of the stalls of greater width than others, one or more of the bars 19 can be removed and the other bars adjusted to suit the width of the stalls desired. To facilitate such adjustment, the partition 7 is provided with a plurality of apertures 24 (see Fig.6) for receiving the screws 20 and the bar 4: is provided with a corresponding arrangement of apertures (not shown) for receiving the screws 23.
It is evident that I have provided a sim ple and efficient trough which can be easily and quickly set up or knocked down for the purpose of packing in a compact mannor for shipping or storing as desired, as it is only necessary to remove the nuts 10 and 13 from the ends of the tie rods 9 and 12 and the bolts or screws 5 from the bosses 7 to permit a separation of the end members 1 from the other parts. The dividing bars 19 for the stalls may also be quickly removed by removing the screws 20 and 23 which hold the same. This having been done the door 14 and partition 7 may be folded in flat, abutting relation and the feed door 11 can be folded inward against the rear side of the trough 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In an article of the class described, two end members, rods removably connecting said end members, a trough secured at its ends to said end members, a partition suspended from one of said rods between the front and rear edges of the trough and terminating at its lower edge above the trough, and doors pivotally carried by said rods, one door serving to close the space between the rear edge of the trough and said partition and the other door serving to close the space between said partition and the front edge of the trough.
2. An article of the class described comprisingtwo end members,.each having a V-shaped ledge atthe inner side of its lower portion, a trough connecting said end members and resting at its ends on said ledges, means for releasably securing the ends of the trough to the end members, a rod releasably connecting the end members at the rear edge of the trough, a rod releasably connecting the end members at the upper ends thereof above the trough, a partition extending downward from adjacent to the upper rod and terminating at its lower end in vertically spaced relation to the trough, a sectional door hinged to the upper rod and adapted to close the space between said rod and the forward edge of the trough, a door hinged to the rear rod and adapted to close a space between said rod and said partition and members connecting the front edge of the trough and said partition to divide the trough into stalls and being adjustable lengthwise of the trough.
3. An article of the class described comprising single piece end members having door guiding slots therein, a trough releasably connecting the lower portions of said end members, rods releasably connecting said end members one above the trough and one at the upper rear edge of the trough, a partition extending downward from adjacent to the upper bar and terminating at its lower end in vertically spaced relation to the front and rear edges thereof, a feed door hinged to the rear rod and adapted to close the space between the rear edge of the trough and said partition, a sectional door hinged to the upper rod and adapted to close the space between said upper rod and the front edge of the trough, said door having parts projecting from its free edge at the ends thereof and projecting into guide slots in said end members, said parts and slots cooperating to guide the opening signed my name to this specification in the movement of the door, to support the door presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
