IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-CRIMPERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELCANAH POWELL, of New London, in the county of Howard and in the State of Indiana, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot-Orimpers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a boot-crimper, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my entire boot-crimper, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detached sections of the same..

A represents the crimpingboard, having a piece of metal, B, bent to fit the board on the front of the leg. This metal piece B is attached to a block, O, which is movable in grooves made in the board. The block C is moved by a screw, D, which draws the metalup, and serves to take the wrinkles from the front of the leg of the boot in crimping. A similar piece, B', of metal is placed upon the foot of the crimping-board, attached to a sliding block, C', and operated by a screw, D', to remove the wrinkles from the foot of the boot. a is the short crook in the board, and the object is to draw the leather in every direction from this point, and by so doing a wellcrimped boot is obtained. On the back of the crimping-board are three blocks, E, E1, and E2, operated by screws G, G1, and G2, respectively The block E draws the leather directly to the heel from a, which is very important in crimping boots; the second block, E1, serves to draw the leather down at the bottom of the foot, while the block E2 serves to draw out the leather on the leg of the boot. The blocks E, E1, and E2 are all provided with clamps I I to hold the leather to the blocks. Each of these clamps consists of two plates, one on each side of the block, hinged at the outer edges, and a bolt, b, passing through the same and through the block, with a thumbnut, d, on the end ofthe bolt to close the clamp. Surrounding thebolt b,witl1in the block, is a spiral spring, e, as shown in Fig. 2, which serves to open the clamp as soon as the nut is loosened.

Havin g thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The clamp I, consisting of two hinged plates, with bolt b, nut d, and spring e, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the'purposes herein set forth.

2. The blocks E E1 E2 provided with clamps I I, as shown and described, and operated upon the back of a crimping-board by means of the screws G G1 G2, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
