Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
Application filed December 24, 1914. Serial No. 878,838.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL IV. Form, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lVashington city, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-FaStening Devices, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to the art of collar attachments, and particularly to a new and useful collar tightening and fastening device.
After a collar has been worn for quite a while, it has been observed that the button holes become considerably elongated, and even though a necktie may be drawn very tight, it has been found the collar would more or less become loose and uncomfortable, and in some instances detached, and also present an ugly and untidy appearance.
Therefore, as an object of the invention, it is a special aim, to provide a device consisting of a band, designed to pass about and between the inner and outer walls of the collar, and supplied with a buckle, whereby the band may be drawn extremely tight to hold the adjacent end portions of the collar closely together and prevent spreading.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means on the lower portion of the buckle, to cooperate with any suitable or especially constructed collar button shank, to not only prevent the front portion of the band and the buckle from riding upwardly, but also to prevent the button hole tabs or portions from detaching from the collar button.
In practical fields the details of construe tion may necessitate alterations falling Within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar, of which the button holes have become elongated, and showing the improved collar tightening and fastening device and applied to the collar. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tightening and fastening device, which comprises the band, showing the buckle applied. Flg. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the buckle detached, showing a monogram thereon. Fig. t is an enlarged detail perspective view of a modified form of buckle. Flg. 5 is a view showing the preferred form. of fastener using a cord instead of a band. Fig. 6 is a rear perspective view of the fastener, shown in Fig. 5.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the usual type or construction of collar, which, in this particular instance, has been worn for quite a while, therefore the button holes 2 of the tabs 3 of the collar have become considerably elongated. In this case, the collar, if worn in the usual or old manner, would not set properly and present a neat appearance. To cause the collar to properly set and prevent an ugly and untidy appearance, a suitable band or tape 4: is provided, and one end of the tape is connected to an improved buckle 5, through which the other end of the tape passes. This buckle 5 consists of a. suitable frame 6 of any contour, to one side of which the tape is connected at 7, as shown. Hingedly connected at 8 to the buckle by means of the eyes 9 (which engage the grooves 10 of one side of the buckle frame) is a jaw 11, which, in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is constructed as a. plate, but in Fig. I in the form of a skeleton frame 12. In each of the Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the jaw is provided with spurs 13, which, when the jaw is closed, pierces the other end portions 14: (which folds or turns back in between the opposite walls of the collar) of the tape, thereby holding the tape adjusted tight, to hold the adjacent end parts of the collar in proper closed positions. To prevent the buckle and the connected parts of the tape from riding upwardly, the lower part of the buckle frame is constructed or formed with an eye or loop 15, which receives and connects with a special form of shank 16 of the collar button 17 The outer end portion of the shank, terminates in a preferably downwardly eX- tending head 18, and owing to the cooperation of the eye or loop and the collar button, the buckle frame and the tape are prevented from riding upwardly on the collar. If desired, when the jaw is closed, the collar button may be rotated, so the head will extend upwardly and prevent the jaw from accidentally opening. The jaw or plate, as
shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 has a finished surface, on which any suitable monogram 19 may be engraved. However, in Fig. 1 the jaw is of a skeleton contour which cannot be supplied with a monogram.
In Figs. 5and 6 the buckle or fastening comprises substantially a sheet metal plate 16, made in the form of a shield. The opposite vertical side portions of the shield are formed substantially into rolls 1? and 18 The roll 17 receives one end of a cord 23, which is anchored in the roll l7 by pressing the roll tight against the cord, and to insure the cord against slipping, the roll is pro vided with indentures 20 extending into the cord. However, a portion 21 of the roll 18 is resilient to permit the other portion 22 of the cord (which passes about the collar and in between the opposite walls of the collar) to be forced or pressed into the 101118. The roll l8 presses with suificient frictional contact against the cord to prevent the cord from slipping, thereby holding the cord secure. The part 23 of the cord, however, is turned at right angles and upwardly, as shown, to further prevent slipping. The lower edge portion of the shield is provided with an eye 24, similar to the eye of the other views, to receive the shank of a suitable collar button in the same manner, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A collar tightening and fastening device, comprising a strip passing about a collar and provided with means connecting its ends for fastening and tightening the same adjustably, said means having a connection with av collar button, to hold the strip in place and prevent the same from riding the collar.
2. A collar tightening and fastening device, comprising a. strip passing about a collar and having a. fastener adj ustably tightening and fasteningthe strip, said fastener comprising a shield plate having opposite side rolls, one roll being adjustably and de tachably connected to one end of the strip, the other roll being permanently attached to said strip, said shield plate having an eye to engage the shank ofv a collar button.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
