To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPH COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trinidad, in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Colt and Calf Weaner, of which the followin is a specification.
he device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be employed for preventing calves from sucking, the construction being such that when the head of the calf is lowered, as takes place during feeding, certain guards which are interposed in front of the mouth of the calf during the sucking operation, will move into out of the way positions.
One object of the present invention is'to provide novel means for interlocking one guard with the body, so that the said guard cannot be raised during sucking.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type described comprising inner and outer guards pivoted upon a tubular body, the outer guard being adapted to contact with the inner guard, thereby to move the inner guard with respect to the body, and to bring the interlocking elements of the inner guard and the body into engagement, thereby to prevent a raising of the inner guard.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.

one of the guards being raised, to agreater extent than in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing the parts as in Fig. 5 but with the outer guard raised to a slightly less extent.
The device herein disclosed preferably is made of metal throughout and comprises a tubular body 1 provided adjacent its upper end with openings 2 adapted to receive attaching straps 3. In the lower end of the body 1 and near to its rear edge, notches 4: are formed. Along its rear edge, the tubular body 1 is provided with an outstanding flange 5 constituting a keeper. Projecting from the body 1 upon the outer face thereof is a stop pin 6. Pins 25 also project from the body.
The invention includes a U-shaped or arched inner guard 7 provided with elongated slots 8 receiving pivot pins 9 which project from the body 1 near the upper edge thereof. In the end of the inner guard 7 a notch 10 is formed, the same defining a shoulder 10 adapted to cooperate as will be hereinafter described, with the stop pins 6. Upon its bottom and near its rear edge, the inner guard 7 is provided with upstanding fingers 11 adapted to interlock with the notches 4. Hooks 12 are pivoted to the bottom of the inner guard 7 near to the rear edge thereof, the hooks 12 constituting gravity latches adapted to engage with the flange 5. A closure 14: may be pivotally supported on the hooks 12. In its transverse portion, the inner guard 7 is rovided with spaced fingers 15 which proect inwardly.
An outer guard 16 is provided, the same having elongated T-shaped slots 17 receiving the pivot pins 9 on the body 1. Both guards have T-shaped slots 26 which receive the pins 25.
Any or all of the constituent portions of the device may be perforated to any desired extent as shown at 18, and counterbalancing weights 19 may be applied to the guards 7 and 16 if desired.
The outer guard 16 may be dispensed with if desired, and the use of the swinging closure 14: is not mandatory.
When the animal is eating off the ground or out of a box, the parts will appear as shown in Fig. 1. Under such circumstances, the guards 7 and 16 swing upwardly and forwardly, so that the lower end of the body 1 is open. Vhen the animal raises its head as takes place when sucking is attempted, the guards 7 and'16 swing downwardly and lie in front of the forwardly 5 presented open end of the body 1, swinging movement of the guards in a downward direction being limited by the stop pin 6. Should the animal raise the outer guard 16 by rubbing the same against the udder,
the outer guard, as it is raised, will come into contact with the inner guard, as indicated at the point 20 in Fig. 4E. The inner guard 7 thereupon will be pushed rearwardly. The shoulder 10 will then interlock with the pin 6 and the inner guard will not be raised further. The fingers 11 will also interlock with the notches 4 and prevent the inner guard from being raised. The fingers 15 will engage within the open end of the body 1 and contribute toward rendering impossible, the raising of the inner guard. If, referring to Fig. 4, the uppermost finger 15 does not coact in the manner described with the body 1, the lower finger will engage within the body and prevent a raising of the inner guard. It is notnecessary that the outer guard 16 be iraised,in order that all of the various interlocking elements hereinbefore specified may be brought into engagement. If the outer guard 16 be in a lowered position and "merely be pushed inwardly without being raised,.the parts will interlock as hereinbefore set forth. When the body 1. is raised from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 4, the hooks 12 will vactas gravity. latches and engage with the flange or keeper 5.
