Specmcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28 1915.
Application filed June 23, 1915. Serial No. 35,863.
To allwhom it may 00mm Be it known that I, WALTER C. Bo'r'r, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Walla Walla, in the county of Walla Walla and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements'in wrench construction, an object being to provide a simple comparatively cheap I and thoroughly efficient wrench which is primarily adapted to retain a nut so that the same may be screwed upon a bolt.
With the above and other objects in view,
the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set v forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view "of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present inventlon, Fig. 2 1s a transverse sectional view approximately on the, line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is. a sectional tiew approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a plan view looking in an opposite directionfrom that shown in-Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view approximately on theline 55 of Fig. 2, Fig. 6 is a perspective View of one of the arched members and 30 similar View of the head of the wrench. VF-ig. 8 is a detail the jaw carried thereby, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the dogs.
Inthe drawings, I construct' a wrench which includes a handle. 1 having one of its ends provided with a'flat round portion 2,
the same'being centrally formed with an opening 3, and'attached to the oppo ite faces 1 of the said rounded end 2 ate'ratchet wheels 3 and 4, the same having their teethbeveled in opposite directions, and arranged upon the oppositefaces of the shank of the wrench are spring pressed dogs 6 and 7 respectively, one of which normally engages with one of the ratchet wheels and also arranged. upon the shank of'the said wrench is a revoluble dog actuating member 8, the
same when swung in one direction, contacting with one of the dogs to bring itstooth out of engagement with one of the ratchet wheels and when moved in a second direction, contacts with the other dog to bring the same out of engagement with its'ratchet wheel, while still moved in another or neutral\position contacts with both of the dogs to bring the same out of engagement with each of the ratchet wheels. 1
In order to permit of the operator of the Wrench obtaining a greater amount of leverage I have arranged upon the-shank or handle 1 a longitudinally movable auxiliary shank or shank extension 10 which, by reference to the drawings, it will be noted, can be slid upon the shank proper to extend or lengthen the handle of the wrench.
Secured to the rounded enlarged extension of the shank 1 is a head member 11 of the wrench, the same being provided with an opening which co-incides with the openlngs arranged in the said member 2 of the shank as, well as in the ratchet wheel connected with the shank. Pivotall secured, as at12, to one of the\ends of'the head 11 is a pairof'arms 13 and 14 respectively, each of the said arms being centrally formed with'ztn inturned portion or boss 15 to whicizh is p wetally secured the bifurcated ar provlded upon the lnner faces of the jaws 17 and 18 respectively, the said jaws being disposed opposite the openings in the head,
shank and ratchet wheels, and the inner faces of the said jaws are serrated or otherwise roughened. The free ends of the arms are provided with links 17 and 18 respec tively, the ends of the links being pivotally other to contact with or to release an elefment such as a nut 22. Thedevice is especially useful when employed in connection'with carriage nuts, as the said nut may be handled by the jaws after being removed from the spindle of the axle to permlt of the removal of the Wheelfrom the said spindle and the application of a lubricant thereto, and the necessity of the operator contacting the nut and so soiling his fingers will be prevented.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is:
1. In a wrench, a handle member or shank, a longitudinally movable element associated with the said handle or shank, ratchet Wheels secured to the opposite faces of the shank at one of the ends thereof, spring pressed dogs secured to the shank and coacting with the ratchet wheels, a dog operating member adapted to co-act with either of the dogs to move the same into or out of engagement with its respective ratchet Wheel, a head for the wrench, pivoted arms upon the head, jaws pivotally secured to the arms, and means for actuating the arms to bring the jaws toward or away from each other.
2; In a, wrench of the class described, a shank provided with a head, arcuate arms pivotally connected with each other and with the head, swinging jaws upon the arms, and means carried by the head and co-acting with the arms for swinging the arms upon their pivot to bring the jaws toward or away from each other.
3. In a wrench, a handle, a head, oppositely disposed arcuate arms having one of their ends pivotally secured to one of the ends of the head, jaws pivoted to the arms, links connected with the free ends of the arms, aqmember pivotally connected with the links, and an adjusting member carried by the head and co-actin'g with the contact member.
.4. In a wrench, a shank, a head, two ,pivotally secured arms connected with the head, swinging jaws connected with the arms and extending inwardly of the head, links pivotally secured with the free ends of the arms, a connecting member-for the links, and a screw member carried by the head and having a swivel connection with the said connecting member of the links, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
