Description

UNITED STATES PATENT A GEEICE,
JOHN W. GENTRY AND GEORGE W. BAROUS, OF PEYTONA, WEST VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANAL-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 116,583, dated J nly 4, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, J oEN W. GENTRY and GEORGE W. BARoUs, of Peytona, in the county of Boone and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Canal- Locks; and we do hereby declare that ,the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in canal-locks; and it consists in an arrangement of snubbing-posts or rods in recesses ofthe walls of the-locks, whereby the snubbing-ropes may rise and fall on them with the boat in a manner by which the boat may be cont-rolled much better, and the Wear of the ropes will be less, than in the use of the snubbing-posts arranged on the top ofthe wall, as in the common way.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a canal -lock with the snubbin g-posts applied according to our improvements, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the side Yalls ofthe lock, to whicl we propose to Iapply long rods or posts B, preferably in recesses C in thc said walls, for applying the snubbingropes D, so that they may rise and fall on the said posts or rods with the boat, and thereby avoid the tilting and swinging necessarily due to the irregular action of the snubhing-rope when working over the upper edge of the wall upon posts at the top, which has atendency to tilt the boat when lowering, and prevents, by the friction of the rope 011 the wall, the tightening up of the ropes sutliciently when rising, and in either case wears the ropes away very fast. We support the rods at the ends in metal plates E, or in any other suitable supports, and extend them either to the bottom of the lock or to low-water mark, or thereabout, as may be preferred.
The advantages of this arrangement of the snubbing-rods or posts will be obvious to those acquainted with canal or slack-water navigation.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In canal-locks, the arrangement ot' long rods B and supporting-plates E ,in the recesses c of walls A, to act, in combination with the snubhing-ropes l), as and for the purposes specilied.
