Description

M. H. WINSLOW;
PLATFORM SCALE. APPLIOATION FILED DEO.24, 190s.
. Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
INVENTOR. 114.011 610W 1 ATTORNEY.
a TTE i MARLON H. WINSLOW, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
PLATFORM-SCALE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARLoN H. VVINsLow, of Terre Haute, county of Vigo, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Platform-Scale; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved connection between beams in platform scales whereby the bearing of the parts will be automatically equalizing, and there will be ample clearance between the pivots and other parts so that it will be impossible for dirt, cinders, and rust and the like to lodge and pack against and between the parts, especially the pivots and destroy the sensitiveness of their action.
To that end the chief feature of the invention consists in providing stirrups 011 the lower ends of a U-shaped loop suspended from one beam, with bearing blocks in the loops adapted to rock laterally, and knife edge pivots extending from the sides of the latter beam and resting upon said bearing blocks, and transversely of the bearing blocks and their support. The bearin blocks taper upwardly, and the knife edged pivots taper downwardly so there is ample clearance between them and the sides of the stirrups and the loop.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying draw ings and the following description and claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of parts of a platform scale, the remaining parts being removed and parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the loop, bearing blocks and pivots. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the device on the line 3 of Fig. 1.
In detail the drawings herein show a part of a horizontal I-beam 10 which supports one side of the platform, the latter not being shown. Said beam is supported by adjustable bearing blocks 11 mounted on the transverse lever 12 which at its outer end is fulcrumed on the stands 13, which with bars 1 1, 15, 16, and 17, forms a part of the base. The beam 18 extends longitudinally of the scale and mid-way thereof and transfers strain or power from the said levers 12 of the scale of the indicating mechanism, which is not shown.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 24, 1908.
Patented Nov. 23, NW9. Serial No. 469,112.
The lever 18 is fulcrumed 0n the stands 40 at one end and has pivots 19 upon which bearing blocks 20 rest, from which the loops 21 are suspended, one loop for each trans verse beam 12. The lower ends of the loop fit astride the beam 12 and are each stirrup shaped, the lower portions 121 thereof being horizontal and parallel to the beam 12 and the upper surface convex transversely thereof, as seen in Fig. 3.
Bearing blocks 22 are mounted upon the portions 121 of the stirrups 5, the lower surfaces of said bearing blocks being concaved transversely to fit and rock upon the convex surfaces of the parts 121. These blocks taper upwardly and upon their tops the pivots 25 rest, said pivots projecting from the side of the beam 12. The lower portions of said pivots taper downwardly to form knife edges which rest centrally upon the bearing blocks.
It is observed that there is ample space between the sides of the pivots and bearing blocks and the side walls of the stirrups, so that material is not liable to collect against the parts to interfere with their operation or to cause them to rust or wear rapidly. Since the blocks 22 rock laterally they will automatically adjust themselves to the pivots and cause a uniform bearing of the knife edges thereon, which will tend to prolong the life of said pivots.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A platform scale including a pair of beams, a loop suspended from one beam with the lower ends astride the lower beam and stirrup shaped with the lower part of each stirrup horizontal and the upper surfaces of said parts convex, bearing blocks in said stirrups with the surfaces straight in one direction and concave transversely, so as to rock laterally and tapering upwardly with slightly concaved tops, and pivots projecting from said lower beam with the lower parts of the pivots tapering downwardly and resting upon said bearing blocks.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto aflixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
MARLON H. YVINSLOVV.
