CLOTHES-LINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28,1?15.
Application filed Iiece nber 5, 1913. Serial No. 804,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, THOMAS C. Korn'riinn,
.a citizen of the United States, residing at Crofton, in the county of Knox and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Lines, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to clothes lines and the object of the invention is the provision of a novel, inexpensive andfeiiicient line which may have its separate sections disconnected one from the other and which is provided with means for interlocking the sections, the said means serving as a clutch to hold the clothes in position upon theline.
A further object of the invention contemplates the provision of a clothes line wherein the pins or clutches employed for the purpose of suspending articles therefrom, are constructed. in such a'novel and peculiar tion of the line itself, the line sections, of which there may be any number, serving as a resilient means to maintain the pins or clutches in engagement with the clothes acted upon.
The'abore and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in theirpreferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are ap-.
pended hereto and form a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the manner in which the several sections comprising my improved clothes line are connected; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the line, the. post and the pins being shown in section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the pin sections or jaws; and Fig. 4k is a face view of one of the said pins or jaws.
Referring now to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention the numeral 1 designates the supporting structure, which in the present instance comprises av pair of spaced apart posts, to which the line comprising my invention is secured. The clothesline is pref- 7 upon itself as shown.
erably composed of wire and comprises a plurality of wire sections, the endsectionQ herein illustrated having an eye 3 fori ed in one end thereof to provide a securing means therefor. The section 2 is'bent as at l at a point intermediate its ends to provide fa loop 5, the saidloop being formed or shaped as illustrated to advantage in FigfZ Ofltlie drawings by bending astrandof'Qwire of which the said section 2 is composed ltd X- tend to the said point it where it'is' fastened The adjacent section, designated as an entirety by'the numeral 6 ispiiovided lw' I double loop formed by bending thewire of which the said section is composed as at .7, the bent portion 8 thereof forming a single loop from which the other loop,9 comprising the double loop is formeddthe {resend of the double loop being securedias at"1 0"to the wire stand 6 at the poin't7 abov'efinei'itioned. The opposite end of the statistic; is bent in substantially the same manner as the section 2 before'noted, therefor the reference numerals applied tothe' said section2 with the exception of the plicable to the section 6.
The next or adjacent line section designated as an entirety the numeral 11 'isla duplicate of the sectionfi, [therefore he numerals applied to the said section t'a're applicable thereto. Shouldthese 'ion 11 form the end sectionfas illustrateclijhercin, a small loop 12 is formed upon the. opposite extremity from that upon whichthe' double loop is formed to provide a, securing means therefor.
Duplicate clamping jaws of which there are two, designated 13 and 1d respectively are provided, the meeting faces of the said jaws being toothed or serrated as at 15, the teeth of one jaw interlocking with the teeth of the other. By fitting the said jaws through the single loop of one line section and the double loop of the next or adjacent line section as is illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, it is apparent that the said two jaws are maintained in engagement one with the other, the tension of the line serving as a retaining element. As shown, the upper portion of the-respective jaws 13 are flared outwardly or away from one another to form handles by means of which they may be operated, the said jaws when forced toward each other adapted to disengage the teeth 15 and to permit the fastening or suspension of clothes or other articles therefrom.
From the above, taken in connection with to maintain the' said jaws in such relation; and that by extending the single loop of one line section between the loop comprising the double loop of the adjacent line section, a positive supporting element for the clutches is provided.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most ellicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoptionof my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in detalls of construction,
proportion and arrangement of parts may bve'resorted to, when required, wlthout sacrl- ,ficing any of the advantages of my inventlon, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clothes line including a plurality of clothes line sections, the respective sections extending in overlapping relation, clamping devices connecting the respective sections, the said devices belng embraced by the respective overlapping terminals of the adjacent sections for the purpose specified.
'2. A clothes line including a plurality of clothes line sections, clamping devices con- [necting the respective sections, each clamp- 1ng device comprising clamping aws on one side of the sections and divergent arms upon the other side thereof.
- 3. A clothes line including a plurality of clothes line sections, the meeting terminals J of the respective sections being disposed in overlapping relation, clothes clamps connecting the respective sections, the several;
clamps being embraced by the overlapping portion of the clothes line sections, each clamp comprising divergent clamping jaws adapted to be held in yielding contact by the mentioned sections. r
4. A clothes line comprising a plurality of detachable linesections, each section being composed of a-singlestrand of wire, a double loop' formed upon one end of each section, a single loop formed upon the opposite-end of each section, and clothes clamps supported by the said sections, the said clamps being adapted to fit within the double loop of one line section and the single loop of the adjacent line-section to serve as v a securing means'therefora 5. A clothes line comprisinga plurality of detachable line sections, each section be the said jaws fitting within the double'loop of one section and the adjacent single loop. of the meeting section to form a securing means for said SQCtlOIL In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
