Description

UmcrED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
CHARLES ROWLAND, OF
BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
TABLE.
Specication of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RowLAND, of Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tablesyand I d0 hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construc tion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan of the table. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part of the table.
The object of my invention is the construction of a new article of furniture, constituting a combination of table and chairs, in which any desired number of the latter may be brought into requisition, and when not in use may be so situated as to be entirely out of the way. The invention consists in constructing the supports of the table so as to be movable outward, and in so fashioning them that they shall each constitute a chair, capable of being withdrawn from the table a suitable distance for a seat, the' backs of t-he chairs forming a portion of the table frame when the table is in its most compact form.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawing a, represents the table top and the frame, the supports consisting of the rods c c and standards d; the rods and standards being united to the fiat plate f; the upper extremities of the long branches of the rods c c being fastened to the slides i movable under the guides e. The lower eX- termity of each standard l is furnished with a roller n. In the drawing the rods c c are joined throughout their longer branches, but
11,652, dated september `5, 1854.
if desired they may be kept separate and carry a roller between their upper extremities to facilitate the movement ofthe support, under the table top. Secured to the standard Z and plate f is the curved plate m forming the back of the chair, and so shaped as to present an ornamental appearance when the support is withdrawn and forms a chair, and also form a part of the table frame when the chairs are stowed under the table. The shape of the back will depend on the taste of the constructor, as will also the finish of the seat and the various details in the construction and ornament of the table. The number of seats will depend on the diameter of the table which will be fixed to suit locality.
From the above description it will be seen that when not in use, and the seats stowed away, the table will present the appearance of an ornamental center table, and the apartment be unincumbered With chairs. When it is desired to use the table, as many chairs as necessary are drawn out, the table being supported by them as well in this position as in any other.
I do not confine myself to the precise construction herein set forth, but
What I do claim as my invention and de'- sire to secure by Letters Patent, `is
Constructing the supports of the table sol as to form seats capable of being closed and withdrawn substantially as and for the purposes herein fully set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
c. RowLAND.
