following is a NEVVENS N. NUNN, OF MAPLEWOOD,
MISSOURI, ASS IGNOR TO THE ALME'I'AL MAN'U- FACTURING COMPANY, OF MAPLEWOOD, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed March 20, 1915. Serial No. 15,939.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEVVENS N. NUNN, avcitizen of the United States, residing at Maplewood, St. Louis county, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in VVashing-Machines, of which the full-, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- My invention relates to washing machines of the type disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 566,885, dated September 1, 1896, wherein a boiler, which is equipped with a manually operated clothes pounder, is combined with a laundry stove or heater, the principal object of my invention being to generally improve upon and simplify the construction of this particular type of washin-g machine, and to provide certainnovel features of construction which will render the machine more effective in use and reduce toa minimum the labor and fuel expense incident to the laundrying operations.
Furtherobjectsof my invention are, to
. provide the boiler with pounding or rubbing members which are corrugated in order to materially increase their clothes engaging surfaces, and consequently increasing the efliciency of said pounding or rubbing members; to arrange the bearing for the pounder carrying rod at a point substantially above the top of the boiler so that the water within the boiler cannot come in contact with said bearing, which action would result in discoloration of the water; to provide a readily removable rubbing member in the lower portion of the boiler against which the clothes are pressed by the pounder during the washing operation, and further, to provide a removable member for the upper endof the stove, which member receives the lower portion of the boiler, and said removable member being provided with a removable plate which serves as a support for flat irons while the same are being heated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described,
claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, in whic Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the center of a wasbing machineof my improved construction. "f is a horizontal section taken approx 0 line 2.2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3is tional view of the boiler holding member which is removably positioned in the upper portion of the stove and showing the removable plate in the bottom of said member. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the bottom of the boiler andshOWing) the retaining means for the corrugated rub ing member which is positioned within said boiler. Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal section taken approximately on the line 5-5 ofFig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 10 designates the-body of the stove, the same being in the form of a vertically disposed cylinder provided in its bottom with a grate 11 below which is positioned a removable ash pan 12.
A firing door 13 normally closes an opening in the lower portion ofthe front of the stove and leading from the upper rear portion of the body 10 is a pipe 14 for conveying off the smoke and products of combustion.
Projecting inwardly from the upper portion of the body 10 of the stoveis a series of brackets 15 which serve as supportsfor the lower end of a pan-shaped member 16, the same being provided with a large circular opening 17 in its bottom and having an outwardly projecting flange 18 at its upper edge which is adapted to rest on the upper edge of the body 10.
A removable plate 19 is adapted to close the opening inthe bottom of the member 16, which plate is in the nature of an ordinary stove lid.
The boiler 20 of my improved machine is preferably constructed of sheet metal in cylindrical form and tapered slightly toward its lower end, which latter portion is of such size as to fit snugly within the member 16. The upper portion of the boiler is adapted to be closed by a cover 21 in the center of which is formed an opening 22.
Fixed to the central portion of the cover 21 and projecting upwardly therefrom is a bracket 23 provided at its upperend with a touch the edge of the cover around opening 22. Fixed;
is pi'votally connected one en'diiof 2fl-'='hand lever 27, the, same extending across the top of the'iboil'er' and being fpiv'otally connected to the rod 25. The pounding member-28 and-.1 disk 30 are preferably constructed of sheet metal or like material. Q
Removably positioned within the "toner I 20 and'up'on the bottom thereof is afr'usto-' I conical rubbing member 32' which is con-" structed of sheet metaljor analogous'niate rial, "said member beingradially corrugated clothes'are forced downward onto its'top surface by the pounder 28 ,and'said rubbing member is held in' fixed position in the bottom of the boiler-by means of a look ing member, the same comprising a ring 33 which bears on top of the member 32, an'd" said ring being provided with a depending.-
