Specification of Letters Fatent.
Patented ltd, 1916.
Application filed August 21, 1915. Serial No. 46,625.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Farm VVESLEY Coon, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of North Chicago, in the county of Lake, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Washers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of household steam washers in which the washing water is kept boiling during the washing operation, while the clothes being washed are kept stirred by a rotary-reciprocating dolly or stirrer. And the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural formation and association of parts adapted to attain a very effective and thorough circulation of the boiling water through the mass of clothes, and with which the parts are capable of ready disassociation for cleaning purposes and the like after use, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a central vertical sectional elevation of a steam washer having the present improvement applied. Fig. 2, is a fragmentary plan view of the circulating head or partition of the present improvement.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in both views.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the main tank or boiler preferably of the cylindrical shape shown and having a flat bottom adapted to rest upon the top of a stove or like heating means, and be efiectively heated therefrom.
2 designates a dome shape cover closing the top of the boiler 1, and secured in place thereon in any usual and suitable manner.
3 designates a metal spider fixedly secured to the top surface of the cover 2, and adapted to provide bearings for the operating mechanism of the stirrer or dolly a with which the present apparatus is provided.
5 designates the centrally and vertically disposed stirrer carrying shaft extending up through a central bearing hub of the spider 3 aforesaid, and provided with a pinion 6 at its upper end. At its lower end said shaft 5 is provided with a pair of opposed vertical guide ribs 7 adapted to pass through a correspondingly formed central orifice in the stirrer or dolly 4:, so that the same may have the usual limited independent vertical movement in relation to the carrying shaft 5 while having simultaneous rotation therewith.
S designates the horizontal operating arm or lever of the mechanism, pivoted at one end to a vertical post 9 on the spider 3, and having an operating handle 10 at its opposite or free end.
11 designates a toothed sector carried by the operating arm 8, in spaced relation to the pivot post 9, and adapted for operative engagement with the pinion 6 of the dolly carrying shaft 5 to impart rotary reciprocation thereto when said operating arm is vibrated in a horizontal plane.
12 designates the hot water circulating head or partition of the present invention, associated with the bottom of the boiler 1, and detachably secured in place by means hereinafter described. Said head or partition is formed of sheet metal and is pro vided with an outer annular convex portion 13, with a central depressed concave portion 14, and with an upturned marginal rim 15, as shown.
16 designate an outer circular series of orifices formed in the convex portion 13 of the partition 12-, in adjacent relation to the marginal rim 15 thereof, to afford inlets for the water in the boiler 1, to the heating subchamber formed between the bottom of said boiler and the said head or partition 12 by the crowning formation thereof as above described.
17 designate an inner circular series of orifices also formed in the aforesaid convex portion 13 of the partition 12, in adjacent relation to the depressed or central portion 1a of said partition, and adapted to afford exits for the steam and boiling water from the sub-chamber above described and so that in the practical operation of the apparatus the steam and boiling water will pass vertically upon and from the said orifices 17, and descend in a partly cooled condition and again enter the sub-chamber above described through the orifices 16 to be again heated. In the associated relation of the aforesaid orifices 17 and concave portion 1-1, shown in Fig. 1, the under side of said concave portion is adapted to effectively deflect toward the concentrically arranged serles of orifices 17, the ascending hot water from the central portion of the bottom of the main tank 1, at Which point the heat interchange is greatest.
18 designates a hook shaped bracket fixed on the inner Wall of the boiler 1 near the bottom thereof, and adapted for holding engagement with one side of the upturned rim 15 of the head or partition 12, when said rim is hooked beneath said bracket.
19 designates a vertically sliding latch bar moving in a guide slide 20 on an inner Wall of the boiler 1, opposite to the bracket 18, as shown. Said latch bar in its depressed condition is adapted to bear upon the upturned margin 15 of the head or partition 12 to holdthe same in proper position during actual use. With a vertical Withdrawal of the latch bar 19, the partition or head 12 can be tilted Within the boiler 1 and readily removed for cleaning and like purposes.
Having thus fully described my said invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a steam Washer of the type described, the combination of a boller, a dolly centrally disposed therein, and a removable Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
bottom partition formed With an annular convex portion and a central concave portion, the said annular convex portion being provided with outer and inner circular series of orifices for effecting a circulation of the heated Water used in the Washing operation, substantially as set forth.
inner Wall of the boiler near the bottom thereof and adapted for engagement With the upturned marginal rim of the aforesaid partition, and a vertically sliding latch bar moving 011 the inner Wall of the boiler and adapted for engagement with the aforesaid upturned rim of the partition at a point re-, mote from the bracket aforesaid, substantially as set forth.
Signed at North Chicago, 111., this 18th day of August, 1915.
