' PAPER-FASTENER.
Application filed January 30, 1915. Serial No. 5,176.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS NLUDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper fasteners and has reference more particularly to fastenors of the pin type.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved fastener which shall be capable of use with an ordinarypin, which shall render the use of an ordinary pin entirely safe, as to the possibility of injury therefrom, both while inserting thepin and after it is in place, which shall increase the ca:
pacity of a pin of any given sizeover its capacity as ordinarily used, which shall, when applied, be positively fastened to the paper instead of merely gripping the same by a spring clamping action, which may be easily applied and as'easily removed, which shall be reusable, and which shall require no tool for applying or removing the same.
To this end my invention resides in a paper fastener having novel features of structure and mode of manipulation substantially as hereinafter. described and pointed out in the claims.
The device of my invention in the preferred mechanical embodiment thereof, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a fragmentary view showing in perspective one corner portion of a group of superposed sheets of paper secured to gether by my improved fastener; Fig. 2 is a perspective elevation of the U-shaped clip of the fastener; Fig. 3 is a perspective plan View of a partially formed blank from which the U-shaped clip is made; Fig. 1 is an enlarged longitudinal section on the line 4:4: of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The device of my invention consists of two principal members; an ordinary pin or similar pointed instrument, and a generally U-shaped clip formed of thin sheet metal that embraces an edge of the papers to be bound together and cooperates with said pin, in the manner hereinafter described, to securely fasten the papers against separation otherwise than by withdrawal of the pin or 5 tearing of the paper.
Referring to the drawing, 6 designates Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 11915 the lower limb, and 7 the upper limb of the generally U-shaped clip, which latter may conveniently be bent to shape from a sheet metal blank similar to that shown in Fig. 3. Said blank, which is preferably cut from some thinsheet metal such as tin or brass, is formed with a lateral wing 8 on one edge of the lower limb 6, which wing is bent over the upper surface of the limb 6, its free edge 9 being bent beneath the opposite edge of the limb 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, thereby forming between the lower limb 6 and the folded wing 8 a flat pocket to receive the fastening; pin hereafter referred to. The lower limb 6 is also preferably formed with a longitudinal groove or channel 10 in its upper surface that cooperates with the covering member 8 in forming the pocket and also serves as aguide for the point of the pin when being introduced to thepocketr The metal blank is further formed with a transverse groove or depression 11 constituting a portion of slightly greater flexibility than the main limb portion, so that'the blank will readily bend thereon in folding.
The upper limb? which, as herein shown, may be somewhat narrower than the lower limb 6, is provided at its free end with a hole 12 through which an ordinary pin 13 is adapted to be inserted. To facilitate the introduction of the pin through the bunch of paper sheets and into the pocket, the metal a groove or channel 10 in the lower limb of the device. Under continued pressure on the head of the pin, the point of the pin slides down the groove 10 beneath the cover 8 and into the pocket formed by and between said parts, until occupying the working position substantially shown in andby Fig. 4. In this operation, the fingers of the user are fully protected against being pricked by the sharp point of the pin by the lower limb 6 of the clip which acts as a shield. When the pin is in place the clip cannot be moved in any direction without tearing the paper.
is such as to cause a clamping elfect, equal to i the bending strength of the pin, between the upper and lower limbs of the clip, all tend ing to hold the paper sheets tightly to gether.
From the foregoing description and the.
accompanying illustration it will be readily seen how the device of my invention effects .the'stated object and advantages. The use 'ofthe covering member 8 on the lower limb of the clip-to form the upper wall of the pin pocket is preferred, since it cooperates with the pinto produce the clamping action above mentioned; but this covering member may be omitted and the guide-groove alone be employed, in a somewhat simpler form of the invention, since the presence of the guide-groove will insure the piercing of the entire bunch of papers by a pin.
- While I have described the invention as a paper fastener. and contemplate that such will be its principal application and use, it will be manifest that it might toadvantage be applied as a vfastener for various other materials without involving any change in structure, principle, or substantial utility.
. I claim;
' 1. A two-piece paper fastener, comprising a generally U-shaped clip adapted to embrace an edge portion of a plurality of superposed sheets, the lower limb of said clip having on its inner face a longitudinal groove forming a guide for the pointed end 'of a pin, and the upper limb having a hole at its free end, and a separable pin having a body portion adapted to slidingly engage said hole and guide groove and pierce the sheets therebetween and a head adapted to abut against the outer side of the free end of the upper limb over said hole.
2. A two-piece paper fastener, comprising a generally U-shaped clip adapted to embrace an edge portion of a plurality of superposed sheets, the lower limb of said clip having on its inner face a pocket the side.
clip being formed on its inner face with a depressed longitudinal guide groove and further provided with an integral covering member forming with said guide groove :1 pocket extending lengthwise of said lower limb, and the upper limb having a hole at its free end, and a separable headed pin the body portion of which is adapted to pass through said hole and enter said pocket and pierce the sheets therebetween, whereby the two limbs of the clip are clamped together on said sheets.
