- My said new and improved form of such clip herein first dlsclosed differs from those hitherto known in the prior art, in that the head or base portion, and the two securingmembers are formed integrally of a single piece of thin sheet-metal blanked into proper form, and then bent up, and rolled, swaged or pressed into a perfect clip ready to be passed thru a bundle of sheets, and have its securing-members forced in opposite directions down upon the adjacent face of the bundle, so as to bind all the sheets between such bent down ends, and the integral base-portion or head of the clip in the well known manner.

bundle or book form in such manner that one or more sheets may be easily and quickly removed or new ones inserted without disturbance of the remaining sheets.
My said invention relates to the particular form of such clips commonly known as the MCG-ill clip, which are formed of thin sheet metal, usually brass, having a base or head portion from which project at right angles two penetrating standards or securing-members, easily passed thru the sheets to be secured together into a bundle; when only a few sheets are to be so bound being themselves forced thru the sheets, and when a large and thick body of leaves is to be so bound, such hole for the passage of such sestandard, being first formed at the proper point thru all the sheets, by a suitable punch, or bodkin like pointed tool, etc., after which, the projecting ends of the standards or securing-members on the s'ide of the bundle opposite to that on which is the head of the clip, are forced tightly down upon the bundle on that side, one in one direction and the other in the opposite direction, to hold all the sheets tightly bound together.
My said new and improved form of such clip, herein first dlsclosed differs from those hitherto known in the prior art, in that the head or base portion, and the two securingmembers are formed integrally of a single piece of thin sheet-metal blanked into proper form, and then bent up, and rolled, swaged or pressed into a perfect clip ready to be passed thru a bundle of sheets, and have its securing-members forced in opposite directions down upon the adjacent face of the bundle, so as to bind all the sheets between such bent down ends, and the integral base-portion or head of the clip in the well known manner. So far such description of the device and its operation will apply in a measure at least to all clips of the McGill type, but my said improved clip herein firstshown differs from all such prior devices, in that one of the securing standards or members is central to the other coacting like securing-member and is slightly shorter than the outer member, with which it is integrally formed, in such manner as to leave such outer member, when the two are bent down upon the bundle of sheets secured thereby, in opposite directions, with a central elongated slot of the size and contour of the central or tongue-member, which slot is usually and preferably but not necessarily closed at the outer and free end.
My said new and improvedv clip, is fully shown and described in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, wherein similar numerals of reference designate like `or equivalent parts wherever found thruout the several views, .and in which:

Fig. 6, is a face view of the blank of sheet-metal out of which the clip is bent, rolled, and swaged into form.
Referring to the drawings- To form my improved clip, as shown in Fig. 6, by the use of a suitable blank forming punching and slitting die, blanks of the shape and contour desired are formed having the outer head or base-portion l circular in form, joined to the inner base-plate 2, as indicated at 3; which base-plate 2, is slightly smaller than l, as to diameter, and is provided opposite to 3, with the outer slotted standard or securing-member 4i, and the inner central tongue standard or securing-member 5, both of which members 4L, and 5, have their bases substantially coincident with the central portion of the baseplate 2, whereby 'when the clip is fully formed such base-plate 2, will be provided on one side with the slot 6 (F igs. 2, 3, and 4,) of the width of the outer standard 4.
Such blanks in commercial manufacture, are then fed one by one to a suitable forming machine, of the form well known in the art, but slightly modiiied to suit the exigencies of this particular clip, and which are of the well known automatic form; wherein the outer head or base-portion l, is swaged or spun down over the inner base-plate 2, so as to enclose the same at the peripheral edge, (Figs. 2, 3, 4; and 5, at 7) and at the same time the metal at the juncture 3, of the blank as to the base-plate 2, is forced inward and outward, as clearly indicated at 8, (Figs. 2, 3 and 4) in such manner as to force the metal of the outer face of the baseplate 2, thruout the juncture, (from 9 to 9', of Fig. 4L) into the form of an outwardly rounded roll.
Many changes may be made in thevconstruction of my improved clip, such for instance as omitting the closed end bar ll, of the outer standard or securing-member l, and extending the tongue member 5, the full length of the slot of 4, may be made without in any manner departing from the broad scope of my invention, and I do not in any manner intend to limit myself to the exact form.
I claim:
A clip or paper-fastener of the class described, comprising a double-walled head or securing base-portion, having an inner or lower, and an outer or upper, substantially circular plate, superposed one upon the other, the outer or upper plate beineof slight- Y ly larger diameter than is the inner or lower likesmaller diametered plate formed integral therewith and connected thereto along a short portion of the peripheral edge of each of such plates; the outer or upper larger diametered circular plate being bent over and superposed upon the top surface of the inner lower smaller diametered like plate, and having its bounding outer peripheral edge swaged down over upon and around the peripheral bounding-edge of such inner 01 lower integral circular smaller diametered plate, in such manner as to secure the two plates together so as to form a single integral head or securing base-portion doublewalled and of dome-like and roundedA contour; ,andy a double-tongued longitudinally centrally slotted securing-member formed integral with the inner or lower circulaismaller diameter-ed plate extending outward therefrom at substantially a right angle to the plane of such inner or lower plate; the construction being such that the single central tongue lies normally in the slot of its coacting securing-member, so that both the securing-members are simultaneously passed thru the bundle of sheets etc., to be secured, after which the central solid-tongue is bent to onev side down into contact with the bundle of sheets adjacent to the head-in one direction and the centrally slotted securingmember or tongue bent down into like contact with the bundle of sheets adjacent to the head, in the opposite direction.
