livered to the receptacle, the chute being automatically opened at its upper end. and closed at its lower end and vice versa on actuating the foot treadle so that in this manner odors from the interior of the receptacle will be prevented from escaping tothe air, and the filling of the said receptacle is accomplished in a convenient manner.
Another. object of the invention is the provision of a receptacle wherein the closure therefor is operated by the foot of the user of the receptacle so that the substance to be dumped into the receptacle can be delivered to a chute which subsequently discharges the same into the said receptacle, the slides for controlling the chute for the admission of the substance and-the discharge thereof to the receptacle are controlled through the medium of a foot treadle, thus rendering the said receptacle thoroughly sanitary and convenient for use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a receptacle of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawingz Figure 1 is a side ele vation of a receptacle constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the receptacle partly in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cover to the receptacle, showing the slides for controlling the opening and closing of the chute in the cover. Fig.
4c is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. '2.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several vlews in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates the body of a receptacle which is preferably constructed from metal, although it may be made from any other sultable material, and B the lid or cover which is removably engaged thereon. Formed on the lid or cover 18 at opposite longer edges thereof are guide flanges 5 in which is slidably engaged a base plate 6, the same having integral therewith and rising therefrom a substantially hopper shaped chute 7, the lower end of which is adapted to communicate with an opening 8 in the lid or cover 13 so that substances introduced into the chute 7 can readily discharge into the body A of the receptacle. Fixed to the base plate 6 at intervals are vertical supports 9 to'which is fixed a guide plate 10 superposed above the base plate 6 and has formed therein an opening 11 for communication with the chute 7 so that substances can be admitted to the chute 7 for the subsequent delivery thereof into the body of the receptacle. Formed in the base plate and in the guide plate 10 at opposite sides of the chute 7 are alining guide slots 12 in which are slidably fitted the connecting members 13 of the cut-off slides 1 1 and 15 respectively, the same being arranged relative to each other soas to alternately close opposite ends of the chute 7, that is to say, that when one slide closes one end of the chute 7 the other end of the latter is opened, and in this manner the delivery of the substances to the body A of the receptacle is regulated or controlled. The slide 15 is engaged in the guide flanges 16 formed on the guide plate 10 at the longer edges thereof, and this slide 15 at one end is formed with an upwardly and downwardly curled extension forming a hand grip 17 which permits the manual manipulation of the slide in contradistinction to the automatic movement thereof as will be hereinafter fully described.
Fixed to the rim of the lid or cover 18 at opposite points thereof are depending hangers 18 to which are swingingly connected the limbs 19 of a foot treadle 20, the said limbs being pivoted at 21 to the hanger, while connected to the treadle 20 are opcrating cords or cables 22 which are trained over guide pulleys 23 suitably journaled on the base plate 6 and engaged with the connecting members 13 so that on depressing the treadle 20 the slides 14 and 15 will be shifted simultaneously with each other for the opening of the chute 7 at one end and the closing thereof at the opposite end, and in this manner the admission of the substances to the chute and the discharge thereof therefrom is controlled. Rising from the guide flanges 5 on the base plate 6 are vertical ears 24 to which are connected coiled retractile springs 25, each being. connected to the respective connecting members 13 uniting the slides 14 and 15 so that after the depressing of the treadle 20 the springs 25 will become active to move the slides 1&1 and 15 automatically for the closing of the chute at the upper end and the opening of the same at its lower end.
The lid or cover B has pivotally connected thereto catches 26. which are adapted for detachableengagement with keeper lugs 27 mounted on the body of the receptacle, the catches and lugs being disposed at diametrically opposite points and'serve to retain the lid or cover on the receptacle. Also exteriorly mounted on the body A- of the receptacle at opposite points are handles which permit the carrying of the receptacle from one point to another.
From the foregoing it is though that the construction and the manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a-receptacle, of a closure therefor having an opening, a filling chute supported by the closure in alinement with the opening, slides disposed in parallelism above and below said chute, and means for simultaneously moving said slides in the same direction to alternately open and close the opposite ends of the chute.
2. The combination with a receptacle, of a closure therefor having an opening, a filling chute supported by the closure in alinement with the opening, slides disposed in parallel-ism above and below said chute, means for simultaneously moving said slides in the same direction to alternately open 1,1ea,ess
and close the opposite ends of the chute, and means for automatically returning said slides to normal position upon release of the first mentioned means.
3. The combination with a receptacle, of a closure therefor having an opening, a base plate fitted upon the closure and having a filling chute disposed in alinement with said opening, a slide arranged between said closure and base plate, a second slide arranged above said chute, a connection between said slides, and means for moving said slides simultaneously in the same direction to alternately open and close the opposite ends of the chute.

The combination with a receptacle, of a closure therefor having an opening, a base plate fitted upon the cover and having a filling chute rising therefrom and disposed in alinement with said opening, a slide arranged between the closure and said plate, a second plate disposed above the chute and in parallelism with the first mentioned plate, a slide mounted on the said second plate, a connection between said slides, and means for simultaneously moving said slides in the same direction for alternately closing the opposite ends of the chute.
5. The combination with a receptacle, of a closure therefor having an opening, a base plate fitted upon the closure and having longitudinally disposed slots at the opposite sides thereof, a filling chute rising from said plate and disposed in alinement with said opening, a slide arranged between the closure and said plate, a second plate disposed above said chute and having longitudinally disposed slots adjacent the opposite sides thereof, a slide mounted upon said second plate, members connecting said slides and movable through said slots, means for simultaneously moving said slides in the same direction for alternately closing the opposite ends of. the chute, and means for automatically turning the slides to normal position upon release of the first mentioned means.
