JAMES A. DAVIS, GF BURLINGTON, NORTH. CAROLINA.
FURNITURE-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Janus A. R. DAVIS, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Alamance and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and usefulFurniture-Joint, of which the following is a specification.
- The device forming the subject matter of this application is'Ia corner construction adapt-ed to be used, primarily, upon knockdown furniture, although the structure hereinafter described may be employed with equal advantage upon boxes and other devices of a like character.
The invention aims to provide a corner construction which may be taken down and set up readily without the use of tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide a corner construction, one member of which is provided with a movable element, preferably in the form of a cam, the movable element serving to hold the constituent parts of the corner firmly together, and to crowd them together.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 shows the invention in perspective; Fig. 2 is a transverse section; Fig. 3 is a perspective showing the main member; Fig. 4: is a perspective showing the auxiliary member.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a main member denoted generally by the numeral 1. The main member 1 comprises a primary part 2 and a secondary part 3 disposed at an angle to the primary part 2. On the inner edge of the secondary part 3 there is formed a projecting tongue 4 received in a groove 5 formed in the inner side face of the primary part 2. The parts 2 and 3 of the main member 1 may be united in any desired man ner. If preferred, finishing nails 6 or securing elements of any other desired sort Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntgfl D gc, 1A,, 1915. Application filed October 8, 1914. Serial No. 865,700.
Noting particularly Fig. 8 it will be observed thatthe secondary part 3 of the main member 1 1s prov1ded upon its inner side with Inclined faces 7 and 8,these faces beparallel to each other and being dis- ,posed at an acute angle to the outer face of the part 3, the faces 7 and 8 cooperating to define a shoulder 9 which stands ,at right -angles to the outer side face of the part 3. In the inner face of the secondary part 3 is formed a transverse slot 10 extended across the shoulder 9.
The auxiliary member of the corner construction under consideration is shown in Fig. 4 and is denoted generallv by the reference character 11. The member ll is provided with inclined faces 12 and 14 of the sort hereinbefore described, the faces 12 and 14 cooperating to define a shoulder 15. When the main member 1 and the auxiliary member 11 are brought into coacting relation as shown in Fig. 1, the faces 7 and 14 of the parts 3 and 11 respectively will engage with each other and the same is true of the respective faces 8 and 12, the shoulders 9 and 15 being interlocked, as indicated in Fig. 1. The shoulder 15 and the face 12 define a groove 16 in which the shoulder 9 on the part 3 is received, and across this groove extendsa locking strip 17, which may be corrugated and be fashioned of metal, the locking strip 17 being received in the slot 10. It will be obvious that the shoulders 9 and 15, constitute interlocking elements which prevent relative movement between the parts 3 and 11 in a direction at right angles to the primary part 2, the strip 17 and the slot 10 constituting interlocking elements which prevent relative longitudinal movement between the parts 3 and 11.
Mounted in the primary part 2 is a pivot element 18 supporting a cam 19, one edge of which is cut away to define a finger piece 20. When the cam is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the same bears against the inner side face of the part 11. The cam, primarily, exerts pressure against the part 11 in the direction of the arrow A in Fig. 2. The cam 19, further, exerts a pressure in the direction of the arrow B in Fig. 2, that is, parallel to the faces 7, 8, 12 and 14. Owing to the construction above alluded to. the cam tends to press the parts 11 and 3 to- 7 iary member and the secondary part havinggether in the direction of the arrow A and then it tends to move the part 11 in the direction of the arrow B, so as to crowd the shoulders 15 and 9 into firm locking rela-' tion. An unusually tight joint, therefore, is afforded. Uponthe member 11 may be placed suitable supports 21 adapted. to up 'hold a shelf platform or the like (not transversely inclined coacting faces defining interlocking shoulders; and movable Copies of this patent may be obtained for means exerting a pressure in opposite directions on the main member and on the auxiliary member in a direction oblique to the inclined faces thereby to force the shoulders into mutual engagement; the primary and secondary parts being united by'a' tongue and groove union extended transversely of the plane of movement of the movable means and adapted to withstand the thrust thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiiXed my signature in the presnce of tWo Witnesses. V 7
