specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14L, 1M5.
Application filed September 27, 1815. Serial No. 52,837.
To all whom it may concern it known that I, JOHAN HANsnN, re- Tonopah, in the county of Nye state of Nevada, ha ve invented certain am useful Improvements in Miners of which the following is a My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in miners candlesticks and the irventicn particularly has for its object to provide a simple and effective construction, of candlestick which can be easily carried in any pocket without danger of injury to the pocket or to the user and in which provision is made to allow for wear and also to allow for the use of candles of different diameters.
In its more detailed nature the invention includes those novel details of construction, combination. and arrangement of parts all of which will be first fully described, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the invention in use. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the position of the parts when adjusted for carrying in the pocket. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2, showing how the hanger hook is grardrd by the loop of the stick. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the stick showing the recess to provide the latching shoulders. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the holder part showing how the same may be formed of a single piece of metal.
In the drawing, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 is the base of the holder which when constructed of a single piece of metal includes the back 2, the bottom at, the front 18, the partition 3 and the top 5, the partition 3 serving to divide the base into two parallel horizontal passageways 7 for the stick 1:2, there being also provided a vertical passageway 6 for the stick when the pa ts are po itioned as shown in. Fig. 2.
The back portion 2 of the base is formed with the open cylindrical portion 8 that forms the holder or clamp to receive the candle 17, there being a thumb piece 9 projected forwardly whereby the holder or clip 8 can be expanded against its own resiliency to release the candle 17.
10 is an upwardly extending body that is formed with a hook 11 so that the candle may be hooked onto any suitable support when it is desired to suspend the same. The
The stick 1:2 is of the usual type and is provided with the handle loop 13 and the short shank 14, the latter being recessed as at 15 to provide shoulders 16 that abut the walls of the basel when the stick is in place to retain the stick against longitudinal movement.
The provision of the two passageways 7 enable the stick 12 to be used in either one as desired, and it will be observed that the hook 11 is so located with relation to the loop 13, when the parts are positioned for carrying (see Figs. 2 and 3) that the point of the hook will lie within the plane of the loop 13 and be guarded thereby so as not to tear the clothing of the wearer or become hooked in the same while carrying the device in the pocket.
It will be noticed that in my construction the stick 12 can be inserted into the passage ways from either side of the base. thus making the device suitable for either a left handed or right handed man without any change in its construction. This is an important advantage that will be readily apparent to the user of a device of this character.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a miners candlestick, a base provided with a horizontal stick receiving passage, an open clip holder carried by the base and projecting; above the same to receive a candle, said holder having a thumb engaginc. car, a member projecting upwardlv from said base parallel to the axis and terminating in a carrying hook, and a. stick adapted to be inserted in the passageway of said base, said stick having a recess to form shoulders to engage the base, said base having a vertical passage to receive the stick, said vertical passage lying in a direction parallel to the direction of said hook whereby when said stick is inserted in said of said holder.
vertical passage it may lie in close proximity to and form a guard for the hook, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a miners candlestick, a base provided with horizontal stick receiving .passages, an open clip holder carried by the base and projecting above the same to receive a candle, said holder having a thumb engaging car, a member projecting upwardly from said base parallel to the axis of said holder and terminating in a carrying hook, a stick adapted to be inserted in the passageways of said base, said stick having a recess to form shoulders to engage the base, said base having a passageway extending in a direction parallel to the axis of the candle holder to receive the stick when the parts are positioned for carrying purposes, the said hook being designed to lie with its point in the plane of the loop of the stick and be guarded thereby, said stick including a handle loop, a binder shank and a locking shank for said recess.
8. In a miners candlestick, a base provided with horizontal stick receiving passages, an open clip holder carried'by the base and projecting above the same to receive a candle, said holder having a thumb engaging ear, a member projecting upwardly from said base parallel to the axis of said holder and terminating in a carrying hook, and a stick adapted to be inserted in the passageways of said base, said stick having a recess to form shoulders to engage the base, said base having a stick receiving passageway extending parallel to the axis of said holder, substantially as shown and described.
