Apertures 16 are formed in the two plates 13 and 15, and are adapted to be placed in alinemen-t" so as to receive thread or other means passed through the hat to securely fasten the same upon the hat if so desired.
v On the inner face of the crown of the hat 10 is adisl 17 having an opening formed centrally thereof, and extending from the edge of said opening is an externally threadedprojection or collar 18. This collar or projection 1S is positioned through the opening12formed in the hat.

Thus the housing 21 is substantially' held to the hat by means of its engagement with the projection or collar 18 formed on the disk 17. If it is wished to further secure the housing to the hat, there is provided in the disk 19 formed at one end of the housing and in the disk 17 perforations 20, through which, When the same are in alinement, thread or other fastening means may be passed.
To facilitate the gripping of a pin that is projected through the opening 12 and into the housing, are provided a pair of gripping members 24%, that comprise inwardly bent gripping ends 25 and at the opposite end of the same outwardly flared finger engaging portions 26. Intermediate the length ot' the gripping members 2e are alined apertures that receive the securing means, such as a small bolt or rivet, indicated by the numeral 27. Said securing means have mounted thereon a coil spring 28 that engages the inner faces of the gripping members against the openings through which the securing means pass. This groove is adapted to be engaged by the gripping portions 25 of the'gripping members, and thereby insures the positive retaining of the pin in the housing.
Vhen` it is wished to secure a hat provided with the improved means described, all that is necessary is to project the hat pin through the opening l1, and of course, the protector for the opening, namely, the plate 13 and through thel opening 12, inasmuch as the hat pins pointed end is tapered, the same will open the gripping members and the tension of the springs will hold the gripping members thereon.
