To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PAUL G. 'VVineERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the, county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elevator-Door-Opcrating Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact'description thereof; I
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in operatingmechanism for elevator doors, and as its principal object aims to provide a deviceofthischaracter which is especially adapted for use in connection with elevator doors of the type employing two, slidably mounted door sections arranged to move in the same direction when being opened or closed.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a speed controlling device for the door sections which is simple as regards construction, will be durable and eflicient in service and be applied to standard elevator doors ofthe type specified without requiring any material changes or alteration in construction thereof.
The above, and otherincidental objectsof a similarnature, are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompany ing drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the claimspwhich are ap pended hereto and form a part of this application.
Referring to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as itis reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designatecorresponding parts: Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the upper portion of the door sections and the casing, and illustrating the speed controlling device in operative rela tion to the hangers of the door; Fig. 2 is a detail view and front elevation. of the speed controlling device in connection with the hangers of the two door sections; Fig. 3 a vertical section on the line .33,of Fig. 1; and Fig. i is adiagrammatical view illustrating the principle on whiclithe speed controlling device of this invention is designed.
As shown in theaccompanying drawings the door to which this invention is applied .is of standard construction including as it does a pair of door sections and B and a since the first mentioned door must travel aconsiderably greater distance when being moved into either open or closed position than the door B.
The track bars C and D are arranged in parallel spaced relation to each other, as shown in Fig. 3. member D is supported by a hub 10 into which bolts, indicated by dotted lines at 11,

The hubs 10 and 12 are cast on a bracket plate 14L which is secured by rivets or any other desired fastening device to the upper horizontal frame member 15 of the elevator door casing. Mounted for movement over the "tracks D are a pluralityof rollers 16 each of which is provided with a. peripheral V-shaped groove 17. In order that the and 19 which are disposed on opposite sides :roller 16 may move as a unit over the track D I'employ a pair of connecting bars 18 of the rollers and secured to one of these I members by means of bolts or axles indicated at 20. A plurality of rollers 21 which are connected as a unit by a pair of connecting bars 22 and 23 and axle bolts 24 are mounted for movement over the track bar C. The door A is slidably suspended by means of a pair of'hanger straps 25 and 26.
The upper terminals of these inner straps are connected by bolts 27 to the slidable I hanger bars 28. f This bar 28 is mounted for movement over the rollers 21 as is best p shown in Fig. 3.
In order to prevent the accidental outward displacement of the member 28 there is provided an Lshaped guard plate 29 which is secured in the proper position tend horizontally from the member 15. The depending vertical portion of this member 29 is disposed on the outer face of the member 28,] 3 As a 'means for guarding j against 3 meansof supporting brackets 30which eX- the inward displacement of the member 28 ranged in spaced relation thereto as are the members 25 and 26 disposed with respect to the member 28. The hanger bar 32 is, as shown best in Fig. 3, mounted for movement .over the rollers 16 being disposed with its lower edge in the peripheral groove thereof. A guard plate 36 and a stopscrew 37 similar .in construction, function and arrangement to the members 29 and 31, are provided for the hanger bar 32.
' As will be hereinafter more fully disclosed, it is necessary in the present l11VGI1-,
tion that the hanger bar 32 be actuated by the movable unit composed of the rollers 21 and connecting bars 22, and for this purpose I employ a connecting plate 37. This connecting plate 37 includes a horizontal portion 38 and two vertical portions 39 and 40 which extend in parallel planes. The mem- 'ber 40 is secured to the track 32 while the vertical portion 39 is secured to the inner connecting bar 23.
The speed controlling device of this invention comprises a sprocket wheel S which is disposed between the connecting bars 22 and. 23 and is journaled for rotation on a spindle or axle 41. The member S is of a diameter greater than the diameter of the rollers16 and 21, and is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced radially extending notches 42. A series of longitudinally spaced pins 43 project from the outer face of the hanger bar 28 adjacent the 'lower edgethereof. From the outer face vof the track bar G and at the upper edge 'portion thereof project a plurality of pins 44 which are longitudinally spaced and are similar to the members 43. The spaces between the individual pins of the series 43 and the series 44 are equalto the chords of the arcs separating the several notches 42 of the member S. As will be readily seen upon reference to Figs. 1 and 2 the notches 42 are adapted to. receive the pins 43 and 44 when the door A is moved in either direction.
Reference should now be had to Fig. 4 in .which the principle upon which this invention is diagrammatically illustrated. In this figure the point X on the smallercircle represents a point on the periphery of the rollers21, while the point Y on the larger circle indicates a point in the periphery of the sprocket wheel S. Obviously if the points X and Y are fixed as regards their relation to each other and are rotated about the axis 'Z, the distance traveledby the point Y durbe traveled by a point in the periphery of the rollers 21. Since the pins 43 represent a point in the periphery of the member S and since the hanger bar 32 of the slow door B is actuated by the connecting bar 22 it is obvious that when the operator moves the fast door A into either open or closed position the movement of this door will be communicated to the slow door B at a less speed. In this connection it should be noted that the speed of the hanger bar 28 and conse quently of the fast door A is commensurable by the speed of a point in the periphery of the sprocket wheel S, while the speed of the hanger bar 32 and consequently of the slow door B is commensurable by the'speed of a point in the periphery of the roller 21.
In reduction to practice, I have found'that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above specification as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary,

hanger extending upwardly from said slow door, a rail secured to said hanger, a track beneath said rail, rollers between said track and said rail, a second fixed track, rollers on said second track, a carriage for rotatably supporting said rollers, a bracket connected between said rail and said carriage, a second rail supported on said second named rollers, and a hanger extending upwardly from said fast door and secured to said second named rail.
