UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.r
WILLIAM A. GEIGER, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIeNon To WILLIAM II. MINER, OF cIrAzY, New YORK.
RELEASABLE DOOR-HANGER.
Application filed .Tune 12, 1919.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l/VILLIAM A. Gnrcnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Releasable Door- Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in releasable door hangers.
In the operation of railway cars, and more particularly baggage cars, many accidents have heretofore occurred due to the sudden slamming of the side doors to closed position arising from sudden changes in the speed of the car and while the baggageman has been standing in thedoorway. The Object of my invention is to provide a simple arrangement for positively preventing such accidents and morespecifically to provide means for preventing accidental movement of a horizontally sliding door to closed position.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of my door mechanism. And Fig. i is a cross section taken on line l-f of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l() indicates a idoormas, for instance, a baggage car door, its sill or threshold or floor underneath being indicated by the numeral 11, its `iamb shown at 12, and the lintel at 13, having attached thereto a track 14 upon which the door is mounted. The numeral 15 indicates the left-hand bracket and 16 the righthand bracket. These brackets are appropriately secured to the doors and .may be of any desirable number. In each of said brackets, and preferably near its upper end, as indicated at 1'?, an opening is provided for the passage of the mechanism immediately connected with the brackets and roller, said roller being indicated by the numeral 18. Each of said rollers is provided with a peripheral groove 19, the flanges forming which prevent the accidental displacement of the roller from the track 14, and through said roller a bolt 20 is Specification of Letters Patent.

passed, having within the roller a cylindrical portion 21 and at either end thereof a squared portion, the squared portion at the inner end of the bolt being Vindicated at 22 and at the outer end of the bolt at 23. Upon the inner squared portion 22 of the bolt is mounted within the opening 211 of the inner arm of the bracket 15 an eccentric disk 25. A similar eccentric disk 2G is mounted upon the outer squared portion 23 of the bolt 2U, the said outer disk having adjacent thereto a hub 27, which is provided with a lever 28 extended preferably downwardly therefrom. Between the said levers 28 a connecting rod 29 is extended "-.vhich is pivoted in an appropriate manner to each of said levers, as indicated at 30-80 in order that the action of one lever upon its connected parts may be duplicated in the action of the other lever. To one of said levers, as, for instance, the one connected with the left-hand bracket 15, is attached another lever or crank 31, to which, as at 32, is pivoted a rod In the illustration of my invention, the rod 33 eX- tends downwardly to an operating lever 34 which is pivotally connected as at 35 to the door and is provided with the handle 36. The said lever is also provided with an adjusting slot shown at 37, which may be of suitable length. ."[n the normal position of the parts, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the bottom of the door rests upon the floor or threshold 11 underneath. To move the door, the operator grasps the handle 36, which may be of any desired. length, and moves it either in clockwise or contraclockwise direction, thus drawing downwardly upon the rod 83 and moving thereby, through the mechanism hcreinbefore described, the levers 28 toward the right. This movement will rotate through the squared portions of the bolts 20, the eccentric disks 25 and 26 thereon, the greatest radius of said disks being above the axis of the bolts 20 when in normal position. The same are rotated until the eccentric disks mounted on the bolt thereof cause the axis of the bolt to be lifted and the door will then be, through its brackets, upwardly lifted and disengaged from the floor or threshold 1l sufficiently to permit it to be rolled upon the track 14; to any position desired. lever, the weight of the door will, through Upon the release of the Operating reverse action of the disks, return the parts to their original normal position and the door to its engagement with its under-support. Y
As will be apparent from the foregoing description, the door will be prevented from' ever obtaining any momentum in either, direction, accidentally, and consequently danger to the baggageman, as hereinbefore outlined, will be overcome since positive manual actuation of the eccentrics supporting the rollers is required before the door can be moved in either direction.
I claim:
l. In a device of the character described, in combination, a door, brackets therefor, door-supporting rollers associated with said brackets, a track for said rollers, the said brackets being provided' with openings,
axles on which said rollers are mounted, disks within the said brackets and eccentrically mounted upon said axles and rotatable in unison therewith, and means for rotating said disks whereby the door may be raised or lowered in reference Vto the said rollers. f
2. In 'a device of the class described, Vin
. combination, a door, brackets therefor, rollers associated with said brackets, artrackV for said rollers, the brackets being provided Vwith openings, disks mounted in said openings, Van'axle passing through the rollers and eccentrically mounted within the disks, and means for rotating said disks whereby the door may be raised or lowered in refer-V ence to the rollers.
3. In a device of the class described, in combination, a door, brackets thereon, rollers associated with said brackets, a track, disksV in said openings, an axle passing through said disks and the associated rollers, the said axle being provided with a. circular portion for Vthe roller and with non- Y ence to the rollers.
5. In a device of the class described, in combinatioma door, hangers therefor, rollers for said hangers, each of said rollers being provided with an axle, the said axle Vhaving non-circular portions and disks eccentrically mounted on said portions, levers connected to said disks, connecting Vmeans between said levers, an operating'handle for said levers and a lrod connecting said operating handle to one of said levers. Y
In witness that I claim` the foregoingI have hereunto subscribed my name this 28th day of May 1919. Y Y
