Application filed March 1, 1916. 7 Serial No. 81,526.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknow'n that I, EDWARD H. MGCLOUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus in the county of Franklin and State of bio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the type of door that includes two sections, one of which is slid up in front of the other, the two sections being then tilted together from the door opening to horizontal position; and the object of the invention is to provide a simplified and improved construction of this type whereby its operation. is made easier and more eiiicient.
This invention is embodied in the example shown in the accompanying drawings, set forth in the following description and finally claimed;
In said drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation looking at what is ordinarily the inner side.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line III-Ill, Fig. 1 looking to the left.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line II, Fig. 1, on a larger scale.
Fig. 4: is a' similar section? on the line 11-11, Fig. 1.
In the views 5, 5 designates vertical channels which are to be suitably secured to the vertical portions of the doorway casing. 6 designates the lower door section and? the lower section 6 are each provided with rollers 8 journaled in brackets 9; and connected with said brackets are chains or cords pass- 1 ing upward over suitable pulleys l0 and 11 to a counterbalancing weight 12. The upper corners of the lower section are each also provided with a flan ed roller or wheel 13 for the purpose to e hereinafter referred to.
The upper section 7 in its vertical osition is sup orted by means of small ro lers 14 journa ed on bearings projecting laterally from the upper corners of that section, said rollers resting on short track portions 15 on brackets designated generally as 16.- The vertical edges of the upper section are provided with angle bars 17 having one web ofiset from the face of the section so as to form channels in which the vertical edges of the lower section travel when that section The lower corners of the:
is raised. When the lower section is raised to the position where it coincides horizontallyor is opposite the upper section the latter section is engaged by hooks 18 fixed to the lower portion of the lower section so that the two sections are coupled for further movement together in the same direction.
The brackets 16 are provided with curved grooves 19 that are engaged by the central or projecting portions of the wheels 13; and the lower rim of said groove is extended horizontally as a track 20 upon which the wheels 13 ride to support the upper portions of the two sections after said wheels leave the grooves.
The upper section 7 is provided at each of its upper corners with a latch pivoted at 21, said latch having an arm 22 to engage a shoulder 23 on the bracket 16 when the upper section 7 is in vertical position and a dependent arm 24: having a downwardly and outwardly inclined end 25. When the lower section is raised the bearings of the rollers 13 strike the inclined ends 25 and raise the latching arm 22 thereby releasing the upper section permitting it to be defiected outward from the wall with the lower section, the lower section being directly deflected by the engagement 0 the rollers 13 with the curved grooves 19. The upper wall of the grooves 19 thus causes initial outward deflection of the upper portions of the coupled sections but after some considerable deflection the rollers 13 ride on the tracks which support the sections at those portions, while the lower portions are supported by the chains or cords as indicated by broken lines Fig. 2. By raising the lower portions of the sections sufficiently the sections can be brought to substantially horizontal position. To permit the deflection of the sections at the upper portions of the channels the latter at'those portions are cut away and made narrower as seen at 5*. 4
The character 26 designates an endless chain running over a sprocket wheel 27, the shaft of which has a spur gear 28 to engage a spur gear 29 on the shaft of the pulley 11. B these or other familiar means the door, w en heavy, can be conveniently opened and closed. To close the door the operation is merely reversed. When the coupled doors drops to latching position the \ lower section descends by gravity or wise as may he desired to close the lower portion of theopening.
What l claim i ,l. A door including, in combination, an upper and a lower'section, means for taising the lower'section into coincidence'with the upper sectiomrne'ansengaginp; the sections with each other, a track upon which the upper section is hung and is rnoVahle-face-wise from the door opening, deflecting means, and means on the lower section for engaging said deflecting means, and a second track to support the upper ends oi the combined sections when deflected.
2. l-l door including, in combination, an nppen'iand alower section, means connected with the lower end of the lower section for raising that section into coincidence with the upper section, ineans engaging the sections .with each other, a track upon which the upper section, is hung" and is movable face-wise trom'thedoon opening, deflecting means, and means on thelower section torengaging said deflecting means, and a second track to support the upper ends of the combined sections 8. A door including, in combination, an upper section and a' lower section, means for counterhalancing and raising the lower section into'coincidence with the upper section, means engaging the sections with each other, atrack upon which the upper section is hung and is movable "face-wise from the door opening, deflecting means, means on the lower section for engaging sa d d flecting means, and second track so. pen; the upwith the lower end ends of the combined sections when doctc i,
A door includin in combination, an upper section and a lower section, means connected with the lower end of the lower section i 01 counteihalancing and raising that section into coincidence with the upper section, means engaging the sections with each other, a track upon which the upper section is hung and is movable face-wise, deflecting nieans, n1eans on the lower section for engaging said defiectingmeans, and a second track to support the upper ends of the coinhined sections when deflected.
5. door including, in combination, an upper and a lower section, means connected with the lower end of the lower section for raising that section into coincidence with the upper section, means engaging the sections with each other, means upon which the upper section is supported and travels so as to he movable face-wise from the door opening, deflecting means, and a separate support to carry the load of the upper end of the upper section after the deflection of the coinhined sections.
6. A door including, in combination, an upper and a lower section, means connected oithe lower section for raising that section into coincidence with the upper section, means engaging the sections with each other, means upon which the upper section is supported and travels so as to he movable face-wise from the door opening, deflecting means acting directly on the lower section, and a separate support to carry the load oi the upper end of the upper section aftei the deflection oi" the conihined sections.
