ATTACHMENT FUR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1%15.
Application filed November 27, 1914. Serial No. 874,263.
To all to 710m it may concern Be it known that l J 0113' V. MoKnn ZIE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at- La Sallc, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in r-rttachments for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for sewing machines, and has for its principal object to provide a device which may be secured to a sewing machine or the like to form a seat for the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a seat which may be readily attached to any fixed piece of furniture wherein it is required that a seat be used in connection therewith.
A further object of the invention is to provide a seat which may be folded to an upright position beneath the sewing machine or other article of furniture when the same is not in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of an attachment constructed in accordance with this invention showing the same attached to one leg of the stand of the machine, Fig; 2- is a top plan view of Fig. 1 showing the upright in section, Fig. 3 is a view showing the device in its folded position, Fig. 4 is an end view of the cooperating legs which support the free end of the seat, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the upper end of the pivoted supporting bar.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the stand or sewing machine with which this device is used, which comprises the usual top 2, and supporting legs 3. Each supporting leg is formed with boss 4: which is recessed as at 5, and the recess is preferably triangular as shown in the drawings. One wall of this triangular recess extends vertically, while the other wall thereof extends at an angle of substantially forty-five degrees and the supporting rod 6 is pivoted at the apex or" the triangular opening as at 7. This supporting rod 6 is provided at its right-angle extension 8 which is best illus-' trated in Fig. 5, and this extension terminates in the upper extension 9.
A suitable transversely extending bar 10 is provided and this bar carries a U-shaped member designated generally by the numeral 11, the ends of the arms of which are turned so that they lie in a plane substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the U-shaped member. The bar 10 is apertured and arranged to receive the extension 9 hereinbeforc referred to. The U-shaped bar 11 is designed to cooperate with the U-shaped bar 12 carried by the seat 13, and these bars are supported near the lateral edges of the seat and the bightportion oi? the U-shaped member 11 is designed to lie between the bar 12 and the seat hereinbefore referred to.
Pivotally connected as at 14: is the leg designated generally by the numeral 15, which comprises the continuous bar 16 which is bent in the form of a U-shaped member, the free ends of the arms of which are bent angularly and then outwardly to cause said U-shaped member to hang in the position illustrated in Fig. 3 so that the bight portion thereof will clear the remaining part of the mechanism and thereby avoid any interference of the several elements.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use when it is desired to unfold the seat, the same is pulled outwardly so that the bar 6 swings on its pivot 7. The seat is then slid so that the U-shaped member 11 travels between the seat 13 and the bar 12 so that the bight portion of the U-shaped member 11 rests against one terminal of the bar. The leg 15 is then swung downwardly in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, and it will be seen that a seat will be provided which will effectively support the user of the machine or article upon which the device is used. Should it be desired to fold the seat to its inoperative position, it will be apparcut that the same is slid inwardly so that the bight portion of the U-shaped member 11 travels between the bar 12 and the seat 13 to the opposite terminal, whereupon the seat will fall downwardly and upon swinging the rod 6 upon its pivot'it will be apparent that the device, will assume the vertical position illustrated in Fig. 3, and the canny snip. w
upper terminal with the stood that such'changes Weight being on the inside, will normally tend to holdthe device against accidental movement. 3 r v v While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodi ment of this invention, 1t is to be underinay be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of theclass described comprising the Combination With a standard, of an out- W'a'rdly extending boss formed integral With said standard, said boss having a recess formed therein, the recess having an inclined all and a vertical Wall, a supporting rod pivotally mounted in the apex portion of said recess in the boss,
copies of this patent may be obtained for the upper terminal five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G.
of said rod having a right angular extension formed thereon, the end of said extension bent upwardly, a cross bar supported in the upper end of said rod, a Ushaped guide 'secured to the upper face of the bar, a seat, U-shaped brackets supported to the under surface of said seat and at spaced distance apart, said guide rod of the bar adapted to be "disposed between the brackets and the seat allowing the sarne to slide into a horizontal or vertical position, and means at the rear end of said seat supporting the same when in use or in horizontal position.
Intestimony whereof I affixmy signature 7 in presence of two Witnesses.
' JOHN. V. MCKENZIE.
