ROBERT PUTNAM NORTON, OF ST. THOMAS, NORTH DAKOTA.
STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 690,072, dated December 31, 1901. Application filed March 15, 1901. Serial No. 51,826. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT PUTNAM Non- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Thomas, in the county of Pembina and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable stands for housekeepers use in baking, ironing, dsc. and the object of my invention is to produce a simple and improved device of this character which can be readily folded up out of the way when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be readily and quickly attached to or disengaged from the wall when it is not desired to use the same.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter clescribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 denotes a plan view of the stand folded up against the wall. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the position of the stand when it is desired to attach the same to or disengage from the wall. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same, showing more in detail the upwardlyextending flange and removable pieces at its corners. Fig. 4 is a detail View of that part of the two-part hinge which is attached to the wall. Fig. 5 is a detail View of that part of the hinge which is attached to the stand.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
l designates the stand or board, provided with an upwardly-extending flange 2 around its edge and having its front corners cut away, thus forming openings or recesses, as at 3, which are closed when desired by means of removable pieces 4, which fit into notches formed near the adjacent ends of the upwardly-extending flange 2, as shown, and which may be readily removed and similarly mounted in the rear corners of the stand, as shown by the dotted lines 5, forming receptacles in these corners when desired.
The rear edge of the stand is hingedly attached to the wall by means of the two-part hinge 6, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and is supported in its proper position for use by means of a brace-board 7, which is attached to its under side, near the front edge thereof, by means of a hinge 8. The dotted lines in Fig. 2 represent the position of the parts when the stand is placed in position for use, and, as shown, the braceboard 7 is supported on a bracket 9, screwed to the wall, and any number of brackets may be attached to the wall, if desired, thus supporting the stand in different positions for use.
When the stand is folded up against the wall, as shown in Fig. 1, it is held in that position by means of a hook 10, which hooks into an eye 11, fastened to the front edge of the stand.
Referring now to the two-part hinge 6, it will be seen that the part 12, which is fastened to the lower rear edge of the stand by means of screws, consists of a piece of metal having an arm 13 bent at right angles to the main body portion thereof. Near the center of this arm 13 there is formed an opening 14, having an upwardly-extending recess 15. The part 16 of the hinge, which is fastened to the wall, is provided with an upwardly and out Wardly extending shank 17, terminating in a shaft or bearing 18, bent at right angles thereto. It will be observed that this shaft 18 is provided at its end with an upwardly-extending projection or ear 19 and at its rear with an upwardly-extending shoulder 20. Now when it is desired to fasten the stand to the wall the stand is held in the position shown in Fig. 2, and it will be perceived that the opening 14 and upwardly-extending recess 15 will register with the bearing 18 and upwardlyextending ear 19, so that by moving the same to the right the arm 13 of the hinge will take over the bearing 18 and upwardly-extending ear 19.
It will be perceived that the upwardly-extending projection or ear 19 will prevent the stand from being removed from the bearing 18 when the same is in any other position than that shown in Fig. 2.
My invention may be constructed of wood or tin or any other-suitable or convenientmaterial, and various changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stand, having its rear edge hingedly attached to the wall and having its front corners cut away, an upwardly-extending flange extending around the edge of the said stand and provided with openings or recesses at the said cut-away portions and notches near the adjacent ends of the said upwardly-extending flange, and removable pieces mounted in the said notches and interposed between the said ends,-whereby the said recesses may be opened or closed, substantially as described.
2. In an adjustable stand, hingedly attached to the wall, an upwardly-extending flange providednear the edge of the said stand and extending around the same and provided with openings and notches at the w front corners of the stand, removable pieces mounted in the said notches whereby the said openings may be opened or closed, notches formed in the said flange near the rear corners thereof for the reception of the said removable pieces whereby receptacles may be formed at the rear corners thereof, and a prop hingedly attached beneath the stand near its front edge, whereby the same is held in a horizontal position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT PUTN AM NORTON.
