, To; all whom t may concern Be it `known that I, LEON TRnBoUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, fully described and represented in the following specification and the ac* companying drawings, forming a part of the same. f
My invention relates yto wrenches and more particularly to a type'thereof having rigid jaws.
In wrenches of the alligator and other types, it is desirable to employ a toothed jaw removably mounted in the wrench head so that this j aw may be properly cut and hardcned independently of and be conveniently assembled with other parts ofthe wrench and removed and replaced asdesired.
Various types of wrenches having relmovable jaws of this character, have been heretofore devised, and itis not my intention in this applicationto claim broadly a wrench embodying therein a removable jaw, but rather an improved construction of ywrench the head of which is so constructed as to permit the application thereto of a removable alligator jaw, or ofvany other special type of aw, or other Igripping surface,cf the spanner type, and the head and removable jaw of which are so shaped as `to secure the desired ready and firm attachment of the jaw combined with a comparatively low manufacturing cost.
A wrench made in accordance with my invention is so constructed as to cause the transmission of the stresses upon the jaws directly to the wrench head, means being provided whereby the removable jaw is so secured in relation to the wrench head as to secure absolute rigidity of the parts when assembled, and avoid likelihood of displace ment of the movable jaw while the wrench is in use. Vhen a toothed jaw is mounted in the wrench head to produce an alligator wrench, Aand the construction is particularly adapted for use with this type of jaw, the opposed divergent coperating faces of the jaws are best so arranged withrelation to the point of application of the force to the wrench handle, as to secure the maximum gripping effect and minimize likelihood of the wrench slipping from the pipe or other object to which it is applied. Furthermore, the wrench is so constructed as to permit the rapid assembling of the removable jaw in the head, the locking means for securing the aw in position being adaptedto iirmly wedge the jaw in place. I also so construct the wrench head, that in the event of the binding of the removable aw therein, forcek may be conveniently appliedto the jaw to overcome this binding, and facilitate theA j separation ofthe aw from the head.

When the jaw g is in position, the end of the shank it will project into the opening e to an extent to Vpermit the insertion of any suitable implement through the said opening, into engagement with the end of the shank k in a manner to permit the application of sufficient force to said shank to thrust itoutwardly of the socket b2.
It will be observed that in the assembled tool shown, both jaws c and g, which extend at an acute angle to each other, will lie below the axis of the handle, or below a straight line drawn through the point of application of force and the center of the head. i This arrangement insuresthe maximum grippingmoment of the jaw g upon the pipe or other object to which the wrench is applied.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the construction is the same as that heretofore described with the exception that instead of using an alligator or pipe jaw g, I use a jaw y' having an opening therein adapted with the jaw c to form the rectangular opening of an ordinary Spanner wrench. To permit variance in the size of the opening in the Spanner wrench,
I provide the jaw j with a socket j adapted to receive'a stud la carried by a supplemental jaw 7c also having a rectangular opening therein. By using supplemental jaws having different sized openings, another such jaw 702 being illustrated in Fig. 6, a variety of different sized spanner Wrenches may be embodied in a single wrench structure. The jaw 7' is provided with angularly arranged shoulders 7'2 and js adapted to cooperate with theV bearing surfaces cZ-al2 and a shoulder j4 adapted to bear upon the bearing surface Zi.
It will be observed that by reason of the arrangement of the bearing surface {Z-(Z2 and and the coperating shoulders g2, g3,
g4, or jz, is, jf, the jaw g or j will be held z. in a manner to insure its loosening to an extent to permit the jaw to be readily removed. By tapering the shank /i` and socket b2, the convenient removal of the jaw is facilitated, and a tight binding action of the shank L with the socket b2 in applying the jaws is secured.
It will be seen that the formation of the engaging port-ions of the head and removable jaw of the wrench as shown involves no expensive machine work, the shank 7i, and stud Z4 and the sockets b2 and g5 being round in cross-section, and all the other meeting surfaces being flat or plane surfaces extending the full width of the wrench head and jaw.
vlVhile in the accompanying drawingsthe handle a is shown as being straight and elliptical in cross-section, the form of the handle 'is immaterial to the invention so long as the handle grip thereof is so located as to secure the desired angularity in the direction of projection of the jaws of the wrench with relation to the handle.

A wrench embodying therein a handle, a head carried thereby, a fixed jaw carried by said head, a jaw stump also carried by said head and provided with an end bearing surface and a bearing surface presented toward said fixed aw, said head having a bearing surface between said stump and said fixed jaw, a removable aw recessed to form shoulders adapted to bear against the bean ing surfaces on said stump, and coperating means carried by said removable jaw and` said head respectively whereby said removable jaw may be rigidly secured in relation to said head and said jaw stump, one end of said removable jaw being adapted to bear against the bearing surface on said head.

a head carried thereby, a fixed jaw carried by said head, a jaw stump also carried by said head provided with an end bearing surface and a bearing surface presented toward said fixed jaw, said head having a bearing surface between said stump and said fixed jaw, a socket opening outwardly through the last said bearing surface and an opening extending transversely therethrough and projecting into said socket, a removable jaW recessed to form shoulders adapted to bear against the bearing surfaces on said stump, a shank carried by said removable jaw having a cut-out portion adapted to register with said transverse opening and adapted to enter said socket, and a pin adapted to enter said transverse opening and the cut-out poi tion of said shank, said removable aw adj acent said shank being adapted to bear against the bearing surface on said head.

A wrench embodying therein a handle, a head carried thereby, a fixed jaw carried by said head, a jaw stump also carried by said head provided with an end bearing surface and a bearing surface presented toward said fixed jaw, saidhead having a bearing surface between said stump and said fixed jaw, a socket opening outwardly through the last said bearing surface and an opening extending transversely therethrough and projecting into said socket, a removable jaw recessedto form shoulders adapted to bear against the bearing surfaces on said stump, a coperating stud and socket upon said stump and said removable jaw respectively, a shank carried by said removable jaw having a cut-out portion adapted to register with said transverse opening and adapted to enter said socket, and a pin adapted to enter said transverse openingand the cutout portion `of said shank, said removable jaw adjacent said shank being adapted to bear against the bearing surface on said head.

A wrench embodying therein a handle, a head carried thereby, a fixed jaw carried by said head, a jaw stump also carried by said head provided with an end bearing surface and a bearing surface presented toward said xed jaw, said head having a bearing surface between said stump and said fixed jaw, a socket opening outwardly through said bearing surface and an opening extending transversely therethrough and projecting into said socket, a removable jaw recessed to form shoulders adapted to bear adapted to bear against the bearing surfacek on said head, said head having a second opening transversely therethrough and projecting across the bottom of said socket.
