To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. RATHBUN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Towaco, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Printing-Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are the following: to provide means for operating the inking carriage of a job printing press to augment the dwell period in the operation of said carriage; to provide simple, eliicient means for suspending the operation of said carriage and to avoid wear of the carriage-operating connecting member; and to increase the out-put of the press by increasing the speed of operation thereof.
Drawings.Figure 1 is a view in per spective, showing the crank disk of a driving shaft; power connection thereof with the platen frame and a portion of the inking carriage and runway therefor, all constructed and arranged as per conventional presses, and a carriage-operating mechanism, constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a detail view on an enlarged scale of the carriage-operating mechanism, showing same at the period when the press is open; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the same as at the moment when the press is closed; and Fig. 4; is a horizontal section taken on the line 4-4. in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view in three figures, a, b, 0, showing what is hereinafter called the dwell period of the rocking arm controlling the movement of the inking carriage.
' Descrz'pti0n.ln the present invention a rocking bar 9 is employed. The bar 9 is furnished with a bearing hub, which hub has a bore 11 to receive a stud shaft 12, which is set out from the side frame 13 of a printing press adjacent the lower edge thereof. At the upper end of the bar 9, provision is made to hold a pivot pin 14 p which connects the bar 9 and a link 15. The
link 15 is pivotally connected by a stud 16 projecting from the center of the crank pin 17, with which the crank disk 18 of the press is provided.

The pin 17 forms a pivotal connection for the power links, 19, which is connected with a stud 20 on a platen frame 21 to reciprocate said frame in correspondence with the rotation of the disk 18 and gyration of the p1n 17 thereof. When the disk 18 is in the position substantially as shown in Fig. 1, which corresponds with the application of maximum power as applied to the platen frame, the centers of the said disk 18, pin 17, stud 16 thereof, pin 14 and stud 20, are 1n approximately the same plane. In this posltlon, the press is in the condition known as locked, or the platen frame has been thrown against the bed of the press and upon the type form held thereon. From this point, the disk 18 continuing to rotate clockwise, the of the pin about the lower half of the plane of the disk 18. The distance between the centers of the pins 14 and 17, is approximately equal to the distance between the centers of the disk 18 and the pin 17. As-
a result of this construction, during the initial period of the movement of the disk 18 which carries the pin 17 thereof from the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings to the lowered position thereof above referred to, the link 15 swings on the pin 14 without rocking the bar 9'. During this period, however, the platen frame 21 has been opened one-half of the full extent to which it is opened, the links 19 having been carried by the pin 17 one-half of the throw of the said links. The remainder of the movement of the pin 17, to a'position opposite to that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, fully opens the said platenframe and causes the bar 9- to be rocked rapidly to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In this move ment, it will be noted that the pin 14 has been moved on an arc, the center whereof is the shaft 12, said are being equal to the radius of the orbit formed by the center of the pin 17, plus the length of the link 15. Thus during this relatively rapid movement of the upper end of the bar 9, the inking carriage 22 is drawn downward through the runways 23, with which the press is provided to feed the ink carried on the rollers in the said carriage to the type on the form of the bed of the press. During the pin 17 is lowered on the swing next succeeding quar er revolution of the disk 18, the pin 1T is carried to. the upper end of the vertical radius, carrying the link 15 and pin 1-1 and the rocking bar 9 connected therewith to the position where the pin 14 is approximately concentric with the disk 18. During this period, the carriage 22 is elevated to the ink fountain, repassing the type form on thebed, of the press where it remains, the rollers thereon being thoroughly spread with ink from the said fountain, during what may be termed the pressure half, or last half of the power stroke of the disk 18.
The movement of the carriage 22 above pointed out is occasioned by rocking the arm 2el on its pivotshaft 25. To this end the arm 2% is integrally formed with a crank arm 26, on the end of which is pivoted by means of the pin 27, a connecting block 28.

within the recess 29 in the latch 30. The latch 30 is pivotally connected by a pin 31 with the bar 9 to swing freely thereon.
The latch30 operates by gravity, to engage when not prevented by the releasing wheel 32, the block 28. To hold the block 28 in position to enter the recess 29, is the office of the guide rod 33, with which the said block is operatively connected. To hold the latch 30 on the block 23, the said block is provided with a flange 34:, as seen best in Fig. 41 of the drawings; To secure the maximum wearing surface for the engagement of the latch 30 and block 28, and to' also insure a close fit between the said latch andblock, the sides of the recess 29 are curved, the curve whereof is concentricrwith the pin 31. The sides of the block 28 are correspondingly curved. During the engagement of the said block by the said latch, there is no relative movement thereof, the block 28 swinging the pin 27 to accommodate the movement of the latch 30. The free end of 1 the rod 33 is supported in an eyelet formed ina pendant extension 35, with which the latch 30 is provided. The rod 33v is rocked by the extension 35, when the latch 30 is permitted to fall to engage the block 28. The rod 33 is operated upon by the extension 35 at this moment, to turn the block 28 on the pin 27 to perfectly-register with the recess 29 of the latch 30.
As seen best in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the arm 24: is connected by means of a link 36with the carriage 22, thereby permitting the carriage freedom to follow its path of operation, as the same differs from the path of the end of the arm 2st.
. Normally the latch 30 engages the block 28 on the arm 26 to rock the arm 24 and shaft 25 thereof. The shaft 25 is furnished with a counterbalancing weight 37 of con- Ventional construction and arrangement.
When thus coupled, it will be seen that as the disk 18 is rotated, the bar 9 is rocked and the shaft 25 is correspondingly rotated to move the arm 21 and link 36 connected therewith for reciprocating the carriage 22 in timed relation to the platen frame 21.
During the preliminary adjusting of the printing press and when it is desired to more the platen without affecting the carriage 22, from the inking mechanism with which the press is provided, the operator engages and draws upward the rod 38. This action rocks the shaft 39 and the arm mounted thereon. At the free end of the arm 4L0 is provided the wheel 32. The wheel 32 when raised is disposed in the path of a nose extension 11, with which the latch 30 is provided. resting on the wheel 32 withholds the latch 30 and the recess 29 thereof from engagement with the block 28 and the arm 26. When the arm 26 is not engaged, it will be understood the arm 2 1, link 36 and carriage 22 remains in lifted position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, being held there by the weight 37.
When the preliminary adjusting has been effected, the operator moves the rod 38 to rock the shaft 39 to the position where the arm 40 and the wheel 32 are disposed, so that said wheel does not extend into the path of the nose extension -11. The latch 30 being then unsupported is permitted to drop into engagement with the block 28 and mechanism connected therewith.
A stop member +12- is formed on the latch 30, as best seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A second stop member is mounted on the side of the printing press frame to limit the upward lift of the arm 24 and parts connected therewith.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that by the mechanism herein described, two objects have been obtained. Primarily, the carriage for the ink rolls is held inactive until the movement of the platen to and from the bed, which insures abundance of clearance room for the carriage when in the course of its operation, it is lowered-from the ink table and fountain between the said platen and bed. Also it will be observed that by means of the connection, embodying the bar 9 and link 15, the upward movement of the carriage occurs without loss of time and is proportionately as swift in the ascent of the said carriage, as when the same is being lowered.

A printing press having a rocking platen; a crank member for rocking said platen; an inking carriage; a swinging member for moving said carriage; a rocking arm pivoted at a point removed from said crank member; means pivotally connecting said arm and crank member for rocking the said arm on its pivot; means operativelv connecting said swinging member and said arm intermediate the ends of said arm, said means embodying a rocking shaft, a crank arm mounted thereon and a link pivotally connected with said rocking arm and said crank arm, said link having a latch head for removably engaging said crank arm; a rocking block movably mounted on said crank arm for engagement by said latch head; and means operatively connecting said latch head and block for rocking said block in correspondence with the movement of said crank arm.

A printing press having a rocking platen; a crank member for rocking said platen; an inking carriage; a swinging member for moving said carriage; a rocking arm pivotedat a point removed from said crank member; means pivotally connecting said arm and crank member for rocking the said arm on its pivot; and means operatively connecting said swinging member and said arm inteanediate the ends of said arm, said means embodying a rocking shaft, a crank arm mounted thereon and a link .pivotally connected with said rocking arm and said crank arm, said link having a latch head formed therein provided with an edge opening recess, the side walls whereof are curved concentric with the pivotal connection of said link and said rocking arm.
