Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. MEGAR- GEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in means for sustaining a lantern or danger signal at an obstruction in the sidewalk or roadway, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will embody the desirablefeatures of simplicity, cheapness, eiiiciency and accuracy.

lVith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawing: Figure 1 is a view illustrating a lantern supported in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating' a lantern supported in a vertical position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lantern holder.

In building constructions where material is piled upon a sidewalk or roadway, or when excavations are made upon a sidewalk or roadway, and in such other instances where pedestrians or vehicles are apt to accidentally contact or collide with such obstructions, it is of course required that a signal be placed upon the same to warn persons of the danger of approaching such obstructions. Such warning is generally in the nature of a lantern, and the lantern is tied by a cord or the like to the most convenient portion of the obstruction. Should the obstruction be in the nature of bricks or earth, the lantern is tied to a stick and the stick is arranged between the bricks or inserted in the earth. As it is generallyl necessary to employ a considerable number of lamps or lanterns, the same are not infrequently insufficiently secured, while still at other times the support for the lantern may be readily disconnected from the place upon which it is arranged, in either instance the lantern is apt to be broken and the signal destroyed.

It is my purpose to provide a very simple device for securing lanterns for such purposes, and in carrying out my invention I employ a rod l having one of its ends Copies .of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner formed with an eye 2 and its second end provided with a lateral spur 3. This spur is adapted to be inserted in a wooden support by a blow of a hammer or 'the like, the spur being of a vsnflicient length to effectively hold the rod to the desired position or at a desired inclination. To the eye 2 I secure a swivel 4, the same having connected thereto a clamp thesaid clamp prefer'- ably comprising a pair of spring jaws, the free ends of which being offset and being provided with openings and one of said openings being threaded. Bot-h of the openings are adapted to receive the threaded shank of a headed bolt G, and the arms of the clamp 5 are adapted to be arranged upon the opposite sides of the air tube of the lantern 7, as indicated in F ig. l of the drawings. The clamp adjacent the swivel thereof is formed with a spring clip 9, and the said clip is adapted to receive the rod l when the lantern is supported in a vertical position, as illustrated in Fig. Q.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

l. A lantern holder including a rod having one of its ends provided with a laterally extending spur, its second end formed with an eye, a swivel secured to the eye,`and a clamp connected with the swivel.

Q. In a support for the purpose set forth, a rod having one of its ends provided with a lateral spur, a swivel connected with the opposite end of the rod. and a clamp connected with the swivel.

3. In a device for the purpose set forth, a rod having one of its ends provided with a lateral spur, the opposite end of the rod being provided with an eye, a. swivel connected with the eye, a clamp arranged upon the swivel, and a spring clip connected with the clamp.
