JAMES B. OWEN, or ALLISONIA, VIRGINIA.
LAM P-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,095, dated November 23, 1897. Application filed January 27, 1896. Serial No. 576,997. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. OWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allisonia,
in the county of Pulaski and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, adjustable, and detachable handle for lamps, whereby the same may be more easily and readily carried from place to place. I construct the handle preferably of a single piece, although more than one piece may be employed. I provide the handle with a match-receptacle as well as a place upon which the matches may be struck to light them. The handle may be plain or ornamental, and any form of clamp may be used for attaching it to the stem of the lamp.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing my invention applied to a lamp. Fig. 2 is a view of the blank from which the handle is formed.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A, Fig. 2, represents the blank from which the handle is constructed and comprises the central or body portion a, with the substantially semicircular or cut-away openings a upon opposite sides of said center or main portion, leaving the flaps a and uponthe outer sides of said openings are the portions a and the tongues a Upon one side of the center of the body portion is a curved wing or flap a and upon the upper sides of the portions a are shown the wings or extensions a, which latter, however, may not be present. The upper end of the body portion is corrugated or left plain, as may be desired. The blank is folded upon itself at its center,
and the portions or wings a are overlapped and rolled or soldered or otherwise secured to retain them in position to form the handhold B and a receptacle 0 for containing matches. The lower end of this receptacle may be closed in any suitable manner, and in this I have shown it as formed by the portion or wing of of the blank. When the blank is folded, the parts a will come opposite each other, as will also the parts a and the parts a, when the same are present, may be used to give extra strength by either rolling it or plating it with the parts a but, as hereinbefore stated, the portions a a maybe entirely omitted.
The handle may be clamped to the stem of the lamp in any suitable manner. In Fig. 1 I have shown it as provided with an eye or the like E, adapted to be engaged around the stem of the lamp, as shown, being made of the shape required, and the shank thereofv passed through the portion formed by the parts a of the blank and upon its inner end receiving a nut F, by which after the clamp has been engaged with the stem of the lamp the nut is screwed up, so as to draw the clamp around the stem of the lamp sufficiently to give it the required strength or support. This, however, is but one form of clamp that may be employed in connection with my handle.
Upon one portion of the handle I have shown a roughened or serrated part G, upon which to strike the matches. It will be observed'that by my construction I have provided ahandle readily attached to ordetached from a lamp and that the same may always be provided with matches held in the receptacle provided therefor. The advantages resulting from such a construction of handle will be readily appreciated by those having occasion to handle a lamp.
Any suitable material may be employed in the construction of the handle.
It is evident also that the handle may be employed in connection with devices other than lamps.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as new is 1. A blank for a handle having a body portion with openings, wings upon the adjacent sides of said openings, a wing to constitute the bottom of a n1atch-receptacle, and other Wings adapted to be disposed coincident with each other when the blank is folded to constitute the handle, substantially as shown and described.
2. A detachable and adjustable handle for a lamp comprising in a single element a body portion, Wings adapted to be folded to form a handhold, extensions adapted to be folded to form a receptacle combined with a detachable and adjustable clamping device for attaching said handle to a lamp, all substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
J. B. OWVEN.
