JOSEPH D. FARKAS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FOOT-BALL COVER.
Application filed August 23, 1915.
To all whom 4'25 may concern Be it known that I, Josnrrr D. FARKAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at rooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Ball Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sporting goods and more particularly to foot ball or basket ball covers. 7
It has for an object to provide a more economical construction for a cover and for a simplified assembling of the parts thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide a fabric cover having a protective flap for the bladder formed integral in one of the sections comprising the cover.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows in plan view, two of the similar sections used in making the cover, Fig. 2 is a similar view of another of the sections, Fig. 3 is a similar view of another of the sections, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the section shown in Fig. 2 in a finished state, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the section shown in Fig. 3, having the tab secured in place thereon, Fig. 6 is a plan view show ing the sections assembled and ready to be turned inside out as in the finished product, and Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view showing the completed article.
This invention permits the formation of a cheap but economical foot ball or the like in providing for a simplified form of a cover which in the finished product is intended to receive a toy rubber balloon in common use on the market.
Referring to the drawing in which the evolution of assembling the several parts will be clearly described, there are shown the four sections which comprise a cover as at 10, 11, 12 and 13 of which the sections 10 and ll'are similar and of substantially elliptical form in outline. The section 12 has a tongue 14 formed thereon which is subsequently folded along the line 15'and then stitched along the lines 16 and 17 which coincide when the tongue is folded over as shown in Fig. 4 and when said tongue has been securely held in folded position, a se- Specification of Letters Patent.
- usual stitching Patented Nov. 30, 1915. Serial No. 46,501.
ries of eyelets 18 is formed through the tongue and body portion of the section 12. The section 13 has a tongue 19 in which an opening 20 is formed to receive the neck of the bladder as will be described, and this tongue is intended to be folded along the line 21 to cause the lines 22 and 23 to coincide so that stitching through these lines will securely Fig. 5 and allow the flap 24 to extend beyond the line of stitching. When the tongue 19 has been securely stitched, a series of eyelets 23 is formed through the tongue 19 and body portion of the section 13 and these eyelets cooperate with the eyelets 18 to receive a closing means such as a string to effectively close the opening subsequently formed by the edges 15 and 21.
When the section 12 has been completed to the form shown in Fig. 4, it is stitched to one edge of the section 10 in having the pass through the line 25 of the section 10 and the line 26 of the section 12, and likewise the sections 11 and 13 are secured to one another in having the stitching pass through the lines 27 in the section 11 and the line 28 in the section 13. This forms the two halves of the cover which are subsequently secured to each other as shown in Fig. 6 in having the sections 12 and 13 secured to each as along the lines 29 and 30 and in having the stitching continuous from the lines 29 and 30 to include and atttaoh the sections 10 and 11 as through the lines 31 and 32. This stitching will preferably be done by starting at the point 33 to one side of the opening formed by the folded portions 15 and 21 as indicated as at 33 and then continuing along the line 30 to and including the line 32 to the line 30 on the opposite side of the opening where it terminates at the op posite point 33. In stitching the marginal edges, the meeting edges between the sections 10 and 12 and 11 and 13 are folded over in one direction as shown at 34 and in the opposite direction as shown at Upon the completion of these operations, the cover member is finished but requires being turned inside out through the opening formed by the free edges 15 and 21 and after that has been done, a bladder 36 such as in common use for toy balloons is inserted through the opening and has its neck 37 protrude through the opening 20 when said bladder may be inflated. The neck 37 is then twisted a number of times to form a hold the tongue as shown inr seal and is then tucked under one or the other of the tongues 19 or 14:. The tongue 2% serves as a closure for the opening formed by the edges 15 and 21 to prevent the bladder 36 from extending therethrough, and after the bladder has been inflated and the neck 37 properly twisted and placed, the
lacing 38 which passes through the eyelets 18 and 23 may be tightened and tied.
It is thought that the features of novelty in this application are clearly defined over the former state of the art and that further description is unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a cover for foot balls and the like, a plurality of sections, tongues formed on some of said sections, said tongues being fold-able over said sections, stitching secur- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ing said tongues to said sections, eyelets formed in said tongues and sections lying thereunder, a flap extending from one of said tongues beyond the stitching and said flap having an opening formed therein.
2. In a cover for foot balls and the like, a plurality of sections, tongues formed on some of said sections, said tongues being ioldable over said sections, said sections being stitched together except for a portion thereof along the edges formed by said tongues, eyelets formed in said edges formed by said tongues, and a tab having an opening therein formed by one of said tongues to serve as a closure for an opening formed by the meeting edges of said sections formed by said tongues.
In testimony whereof I athx my signature.
