The invention consists in the parts, and in the arrangements and combinations of parts as will more fully appear hereinafter.

In the constructionfvhich I have shown as embodying my invention, the receptacle is formed'of a box 1 which is preferably square in cross-section, and hassides 3, a bottom 4 and a removable lid 2. The box 1 shown in the accompanying drawing is designed for the shipment of eggs, and for this purpose the inside of the box is divided into cells or compartments 9. However, the box may be used for theshipment' of other articles; and

the particularl cellular construction shown forms no part o f the present invention.

The locking bars 11 have upturned ends l14 adapted to engage with the hook-shapedkeepers 10.l The faces of the keepers 10 and the faces of the upturned ends 14 are slightly beveled (as shown to the best advantage in Fig. 4) to engage tightly witheach other when the locking bars v11 are in their locking position. Two of the opposite locking bars 11 are each provided with a pair of adjacent slots 15, and curled around the portion of tlielocking bar -between each -paii 'ofslots 15 is the end of a bail-shaped handle 16. The -lid Q hasy arcuate slots 1T through which the ends of the handle 16 pass. Riveted to one of the locking bais 11 is one end :of a leaf spring 18 which carries at its ot her end a stud 19, having its end slightly rounded. The stud 19 passes through a hole iii the locking bar l1, and, when" the locking bars are in their locking-position, the stud .passes through a hole in the lid 2. .4

.To remove the lid :2, the stud 19 is pressed down by one fingerand thenthe handle 16 is twisted to throw the locking bars 11 out of engagement with the keepers 10, whereupon the lid-2 may be lifted. The lid '2 of the box 1 Vmayl beieadily removed for iiispection of the contents of the box and vet is held firmly in position by the locking bars 11 andthe keepers 10 when it is locked. The upturned ends l1 of the locking bars '11 engage the hook-shaped keepers 10 and keep the sides 3 of the box from bulging out. Vhen the box is lifted by the handle 16, the

weight is supported by the locking bars 11 and the sides 3. 7 The locking bars 11 cannot be pulled en dwise out of engagement with the keepers 10 because their uptui'iied ends 14 arehooked under these keepers. The stud 19 positively holds -the locking `bars 11 in. their locking position'so that when the lid 2 is lockedA in place it caiiiiot be removed without proper manipulation.

It is apparent 'lthat the cover fastenery which I have shown an vdescribed 'may be considerably modified wilhout departing from my lnvention, and I do not wish, therefore, to be limited to this exact construction.V

That 'I' claim is:

1. A cover fastenei: for boxes comprising a locking bar pivoted to the lid of the box. a bail-Shaped handle having its ends pivotally connected to said locking bar on opposite sides of its pivot,1a spring carrying a locking bar.- Y 2; A cover fastener for angular boxes comprising a looking member pivoted to the lol of the box on the under side .thereof to yswing horizontally, keepers secured to the Sides ofsaid .box on the inside :rt-'the upper edges thereof and arranged to` be engagedbv said llocking member, a spring-pressed eatch for holding said locking member in its locking position', said catch being automatically actuated by moving said locking member to its locking position, and a bail p'ivotally con' nected to said locking member for manipulating said locking member and for carryingl saidbox.
