Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. a citizen of the United'States, and resident of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex v and State of Massachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdersfor Telephones and otherArticles, of which thefollowing is a specification.

Thisinvention relates to supports for 'ar ticles such a sjtelephones, electric or other lamps, and other devices which are to be removed from and replaced upon theirsup ports.

The object a support from which the telephone or other article can not possibly he accidentally displaced, but from which it can be removed when desired as readily as though resting on a plain flat surface suchas a desk top, shelf, or chair arm or bracket.

To this end, the invention consists in a support having catches which automatically .engage the telephoneinstrument or other ar ticle so that'it cannot be moved off laterally or by tilting, but which "will automatically release the said article when the The invention further consists in the improvements substant ally as hereinafter de scribed and claimed.

The plunger 21 not only serves as the connection between the spring 22 andthe depressible rest 11 so that the latter will rise and release the catches when the article is lifted, but it also acts to'guide the said rest 11 and prevent the latter from tilting. all the catches must operate simultaneously or in unison, this being due to the disk 11, which operates allthe catches, and the fact that said disk cannot rock or tilt so as'to permit one catch to open and let the article tilt.

Having described my invention, 1 claim: 1. A device. of the. character described comprising a" support having movable catches, means operatedgby the placing of an article onsaid supportorlifting it there from for simultaneously operating said catches inwardly or outwardly, and means for guiding all of the catches to cause them to act in unison wherebyneither catch can yield'to permittilting ofthe article on the support. p

2. A device of the character described comprising a support, spring-controlled means for yieldingly holding the support in a raised position and permitting its depression by an article deposited on it. and catches engaged with said article by the depression of the support to prevent the article from being tilted on orremoved laterally from the support, and automatically moved and held out of engagement with said article by the support when the article is lifted.

3. A device of the character described comprising a vertically movable article support, movable catches connected therewith, a lower member toward which said support is movable under the influence of the weight of an article on the support, connections between the said lower memberand the catches to insure simultaneous inward action of the catches, and means for preventing either catch from moving outwardly until all the catches are free from the saidarticle.

A'device of the character described comprising a socket, a spring therein, upper and lower disks, the upper disk having a plunger bearing on said spring, guides having outwardly turned upper ends carried by the lower disk, and catches pivoted to the upper disk and having sliding con CHARLES H.
