.IMPROVEMENT IN MOP-HEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,174, dated June 20, 1871.

To all whom it may concern: l

Be it known that I, BRIDGET FRENCH, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of' New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mop- Heads, of which the following is a specification:

i N atnre of the Invention.

This invention consists in constructing the cross-headof the mop in the form of a T, armedI with saw-teeth at the bottom, and combining the same with a hollow or concave clamp, which is hinged at one end and secured by a thumbscrew at the other, the whole operating in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

General Description.

In the drawing, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved 1n op-head with the clamp thrown open; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same closed.

A represents the handle 5 B, the cross-head; and O, the clamp of the mop.

The cross-head is of T-form, the upper or horizontal part supporting the socket a, and the lower or vertical web formed with. a series of saw-teeth, b, which hold the cloth 0r rags when in place. The upper part has also stiening-iianges c c, and the lower part has thickened bearings or blocks d t at the ends, pierced with series of holes f j' for the adjustment of the clamp thereon by means of the thumb screws g g or equivalent pivots. The clamp is formed with end bearings or lugs h h, which connect with the cross-head, as above described, and the body is made with a rounded edge, k, at the bottom to pass easily over the iloor, and with a hollow aring groove or concave, on, at the top, which not only gives space for the sinking of the cloth therein, but also for the escape of water which collects in the center within the cloth. These parts are all made of cast-iron, and can therefore be produced cheaply.

I am aware that a IiXed head and movable clamp has before been used.

My invention consists in the special T-form of the cross-head, armed with the saw-teeth, and combined with the clamp having the flaring opening, into which the teeth strike. This form and construction ofthe parts I believe to be new. The T-form of the cross-head gives great strength, and enables the web or vertical part to be made very thin, which is desirable to avoid making the clamp large and unwieldy. The flaring and hollow form of the latter gives ample space for the reception of the cloth, and also provides for the escape of the water at the center by passing out at the lower depths around the cloth. It will be seen that either end of the head may be used as the pivot end, and that any desired degree of adjustment may be attained by means of the holes f f2 Claim.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The angular groove or water-receptacle in of the pivoted clamp G, in combination with the T-shaped cross-head B provided with the sawteeth b, the several parts constructed and operating substantially as set forth, for the purpose specified.
