ADJUSTABLE CONNLElG'JTION FOB. SWITCH-POINTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Application filed. July 16, 1915. Serial No. 40,285. a
To all whom it may concern f Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. Bossnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Connections for Switch-Points; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in switch point throwing apparatus for use in connection with railways and consists of a simple and eflicient appa ratus of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a central sectional View through the boxing forming a part of my improved switch point throwing apparatus. Fig. 2 is an end view, the switch operating bar being in section, and Fig. 3 is a central sectional View taken in a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 1 and showing a slight modification in the shape of the nuts and chambers of the boxing.
To illustrate the principle involved in my invention, I have shown a particular form of apparatus in which numeral 1 designates a boxing provided with a lateral extension 2 to which the switch throwing bar 3 is secured by bolts 4 or any other suitable fastening means. Said boxing is provided with chambered portions 5, the inner ends of which may be flat, convexed or concaved, the latter shape being shown in the drawings at 5 and 6 designates an opening communicating between the two chambers.
The lower portion of each chamber is elevated as at 7 and its upper edge 8 inclines outwardly and downwardly from the inner wall of the chambered portion.
A switch point throwing rod 10, circumferentially threaded, is movable through the boxing and a space intervenes between the circumference of the screw and. the, marginal edge of the opening 6 which communicates with the two chambers. Nuts, designated by numeral 11, are mounted upon the threaded rod, and their inner ends are adapted to conform to the shape ofthe inner end walls of the chambers. In the form which I have chosen to illustrate, the inner ends of the nuts are shown as being convexed and are made preferably on the arc of the same curved surface as the inner concaved end of the chamber, so that, when the nut is seated, it will assume the position shown to the right hand end of the boxing, as illustrated in Fig. 1, although it will be understood that I do not confine myself to this shape as against the outer ends of the nuts 11 and serve to hold the same in their proper adjusted positions.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have shown a boxing 20 which has a lateral extension 21 to which the point throwing bar 22 is held by means of bolts 23 and the chambered portions 24: of the boxing, instead of being evenly outlined asillustrated in Fig. 1, are shown as tapering and a passageway 25 communicates between the two chambers of the boxing. The nuts 26, which are mounted upon the threaded rod 27, are conical-shaped to conform to the tapering walls of the chambers and the inner ends of the nuts are convexed and adapted to conform to the con caved inner end of each chamber 24. Jam nuts 28 are fitted to the rod and bear against the outer ends of the nut. Said nuts 26 are of suflicient length so that their outer ends, when at their inner limits, will project out beyond the ends of the chamber in which it is located so that a tool may be applied to the circumference of the nut for the purpose of adjusting the same.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be noted that the raised surface upon the bottom and which is shown in Fig. 2 is dispensed with, the walls of the chamher being of a uniform concavity and conforming to the shape of the inner and of the nut and so arranged that, when the rod is moved in one direction or the other, the inner end of the nut will seat uniformly about the marginal edge of the opening leading through one chamber to the other,'by the sudden rise of the nut as it moves toward theinner end of'the'chamber, and affording means whereby any water whichmay enter the chambers may drain to prevent freezing of the'nuts to'the wall of the chambers.
It will be noted in'the drawings that the chamber is of larger capacity than the size of the nut which is movable therein in order to allow the-nut to have a play incident to its being elevated by the inclined wall of the chamber on the raised portion of the bottom thereof, sothat, when the nut seats, its axis will be in a line with the axis of the chamber, the size of the'chamber providing for the creeping of the switch points or any bers and passageways, nuts mounted on said rods, and'means for elevating the nuts as they move longitudinally so that their longitudinal centers will be in alinement with the, axis of the chamber in which they are located. v V r V '2, An adjustable connection for railway switch points comprising a boxing with chambered portions in, the opposite ends- 7 thereof with a central communicating pasthe rod upon which they are mounted to bring the longitudinal center of the nut in alinement with the axial center of the chamber in which it is located.
3. An adjustable connection for switch points, comprising a boxing provided with chambered portions in the opposite ends thereof and a communicating passageway between the same, a switch point throwing rod passing through said chambers and passageway, nuts mounted upon said rods, the lower portions of the chambers upon which the nuts rest being outwardly and downwardly inclined and serving as means to raise the nut as it approaches its seat about the marginal edges of said passageway in the inner ends of the chamber.
4. An adjustable connection for switch points, comprising a boxing provided with chambered portions in the opposite ends thereof and a communicating passageway between the same, a switch point throwing rod passing through said chambers and passageway, nuts mounted upon said rod, its outer end projecting beyond the outer ends of the boxing, the bottom of each chamber beingoutwardly inclined and upon which the inner portions of the nuts are adapted. to rest, and jam nuts upon the rod engaging said nuts.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
