REMOVABLE BARREL-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedNov.16,1915.
Application filed September 9, 1914. Serial N 0. 860,842.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known'that 1, CHARLES E. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Rich: land and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Re movable Barrel-Heads, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in removable barrel heads, particularly foruse with barrels used to store or transport bottled orbulk goods,
and the primary object of the invention is to provide a head which can be. easily applied to andremoved from the barrel with out disturbing the usual barrel hoops.
A further object of the invention isto provide a head which is formed in collapsible or contractible sections that are provided with interlocking connections at their adjacent edges so-as to effectively, unite the sections at their said edges and to provide a strong and rigid connection therebetween.
A still further object of the invention is to provide improved means for locking the sections against contractile or collapsible movement, and means of adjusting thesections comprising the barrel head to fit the croze groove of barrels, varying. in diameter.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a simple economical and strong head and lock of serviceable and practicalstructure.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention showing the parts in locked position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in unlocked position; Fig. 6 is a section on the line AA of Fig. 1.
with the barrel omitted; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation partly broken away and shown in section on the line BB of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the sections comprising the barrel head showing a modified means of adjustably connecting one end of the sections together.
In accordance with the present invention the head is preferably formed of sheet metal comprising two segmental or semi-circular sections 1 and 2 pivoted together by means of a screw 3 or the like. The inner or straight side edge of the section 2 is offset as indicated at 5 and is received in a channel 4 which latter is formed by bending the inner or straight side edge of the section 1 back upon itself at 4 and then outwardly at 6, whereby the channel 4 is formed between the parts 6 and 4 which latter conjointly delinea substantially U-shaped configuration in cross section, The curved edge of each section is rolled over or curled at 7 preferably .in an outward direction, the curled edges 7. being received in the usual croze groove 8. of the barrel- 1 For the purpose of holding the sections 1 and 2 expanded and thereby retaining the curled edges 7 within the croze groove 8, a locking device is employed, which embodies a pair of toggle levers 9 and 10 pivotedat their outer ends at 11 and 12 respectively and pivotally connected together at their inner ends at 13. When the toggle levers are moved toward the center of the head, the sections'l and2 will be contracted at their free portions or ends by virtue of the sections moving toward each other aboutthe pivoting screw 3, and when the toggle levers are moved outwardly toward the periphery of the head, the sections will be relatively spread or expanded at their free portions or ends. 'Preferably the toggle levers can move to the position shown in Fig. 1 in which their mutual or common pivotal connection 13 is past the dead center, which latter is defined by a line drawn between. the pivotal points 11 and 12. p r F or the purpose of holding the toggle levers 9' and 10 in locking position, a locking lever 14 is provided and is pivoted at 18 to the section 1. The inner end of the toggle lever 9 is turned at right angles at 16 to form a stop, and, when the toggle levers are in looking position, is engaged with an car 17 formed on the outer or free end of the locking lever 14. The outer or free end of the locking lever is curved to form a shoulder or abutment 15, which engages with and rides on the inner side edge of the toggle lever 10 so as to positively move the toggle levers to locking position, the movement of the lever 14 to locking position being limited by engagement of its car 17 with the stop 16 of the toggle lever 9. The outward movement of the toggle levers is limited by engagement with the curled edges 7.
If desired registerin apertures 17 may be formed in the ear 1? and stop 16 to enable fastening or sealing means such as a wire to be passed therethrough so as to posi tively hold the parts locked.
The free end of the bent part 6 of section cure tvvo L shaped brackets 19 and20 to the sections 1 and 2 and provideapertures in i the upstanding. portions. A'bolt 21 having both ends threaded is inserted in the apertures thereby connectingthe sections. Lock nuts 22 and 23 engage the upstanding portion of thegLshape brackets :and' hold the section in any adjuste'd'position.
Attention is called to the factthat by providing means of expanding or contracting the. ends of the section that are provided With the adjustable connecting device, (as shown in Fig that the section can :be made to exactly fit the'croze groove in barrels of varyingsizes;
What is claimed is: w
1. In a barrel head, a pair of pivotally connected sections, one of said sections having a channel which receives the adjacent I edge 'of'the other section, a pair of toggle leverspivoted together and pivotally connected-to therespective sections, and a locking lever pivoted'to one of the sections-to engage :With one of the levers to hold the.latter in looking position.
2. Ina barrel head, a pair of pivotally connected sections, one ofsa'id sections having its inner edge doubled overupon itself and then bent outwardly to form a channel of U-shape in cross-section Whichchannel receives the inner edge of the other section, and means to holdthe sections against movement on their said pivotal connection.
3. In a barrel head, a pair of pivotally connected sections, a pair of toggle levers pivoted-together'and pivoted to the respective sections, a locking lever pivoted to one of the sections and having a part to engage the inner edge of one of the toggle levers to move both to locking position, an car on th'e"lockin'g lever and a stop on one of the toggle levers to engage the ear to restrict the extent of movement of the locking lever to locking position.
4. In a barrel head, a pair of pivotally connected sections, a pair of toggle levers pivoted-togethersand pivoted to the respectivesections, and a locking lever pivoted to oneof the sections and engaged with one of the levers to hold both of the levers locked.
'5. In a barrel head, a pair of pivotally connected. sections having their outer edges curled to be received in the croze groove of a barrel, means to hold the sections against pivotal movement, and means to expand the sections to frictionally contact with the croze *groove.
6. In a barrel head, a pair of pivotally connected sections, togglelevers pivoted together and to the respective sections, and means to lock the toggle levers against movement.
7. In a barrel head, a .pair of pivotally connected sections, a toggle device pivoted to the respective sections and movable past dead center to relatively expand the sections, and means .to hold the device locked.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presenceof tWo Witnesses.
