JOHN MITISKI, or AVONMORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PADLOCK.
Application filed January 19, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN MITISKI, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Avonmore, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pad locks and has for its object to provide a lock of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, conveniently released when the occasion so requires, inexpensive to manufacture, including an inclosing casing adapted to be shifted when it is desired to release the lock.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :F igure 1 is an elevation of a pad lock in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 a top plan, and Fig. 4 a sectional plan taken on the line aa of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a plate, provided with a pair of openings for the passage of the arms 2, 3, of a shackle 4. The arm 3 of the shackle 4 is of materially greater length than the arm 2 and said arms 2, 3, are capable of sliding in the plate 1.
Secured to and projecting from the inner face of the plate 1 is alock casing 5 having one side formed with openings 6, 7, for the passage of a pair of transversely extending shifting arms 8, 9, which have their outer ends connected together by a handle 10. The casing 5 greatly increases in width from the end 11, to the plate 1, the latter forming the other end of the said casing 5, and fixedly secured within the casing 5 is a pair of lengthwise extending spaced supports 12, 13, and to which is secured a pair of pivoted rods 14, 15, the former having Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. is, 1915.
Serial No. 3,094.
mounted thereon a locking lever 16 and the latter a locking lever 17 The arm 8 is connected to the locking lever 17 as at 18 and the arm 9 is attached to'the locking lever 16 as at 19.
The support 12 has one end flanged as at 20 and attached to said flange 20 is the lower end of a coil spring 21. The upper end of said spring 21 is connected to the locking lever 16. Secured to the support 12 is a bracket 22 having attached thereto the lower end of a coil spring 23. The upper end of the spring 23 is connected to the locking lever 17. V i
The elongated arm 3 of the shackle 4 extends down through the flange 20 and is reduced as at 24, to form a shoulder 25 and interposed between the latter and the end 11 of the casing 5, as well as surrounding the reduced end 24 of the arm 3, is a coil spring 26, which has a tendency to force the shackle outwardly so as to shift the arm 2 clear of the plate 1. The arm 3 is notched as at 27, 28, to provide seats 29, 30, the former is adapted to be engaged by the free end of the locking lever 17, and the latter by the free end of the locking lever 16. Surrounding the lock casing 5 is an inclosing casing 31, having one end open and the other end closed as at 32. The open end of the casing 31 is adapted to abut against the plate 1 whereby the said plate 1 will close said open end of said casing 31.
The reference character 33 denotes an elongated coil spring having one end attached to the plate, as at 34, and its other end attached to the closed end 32 of the easing 31, as at 35, and the function of the spring 33 is to maintain the casing 31 in abutting engagement with the plate 1. A grip 36 projects from the closed end 32 of the casing 31.
The arm 8 is arranged at one side of the arm 3 of the shackle 4 and the arm 9 is arranged at the other end of the arm 3 of the shackle 4.
It will be assumed that the elements are in the position shown in Fig. 2, when it is desired to open the lock, the casing 31 is pulled down from the plate 1, until it is clear of the handle 10, the shackle is then moved inwardly against the action of the spring 26 whereby the seats 29, 30, will be free of the ends of the locking levers 16, 17.
After the shackle 4 has been shifted in-.
wardly in the manner as stated, the handle 10 is pulled outwardly, the locking levers 16, 17, swing on their pivots to clear the arms 3 of the shackle 4t and under such conditions the spring '26 will then force the shackle outwardly so that the arm 2 Will be clear of the plate 1. The casing 31 is then released and the spring 33 moves said casing against the plate 1. To move the shackle 4 to locking position all' that is ing position due to the action of the spring 21, 23. The arm 3 of the shackle L hasa lug 37 to limit outward movement of the shackle 4.
What I claim is 1. A look comprising a casing, a spring cont-rolled shackle having the arms thereof I normally extending therein, one of the arms of said shackle provided With seats, spring controlled locking levers arranged in said casing and en aging in saidseats to pre-.
vent outward movement of the shackle, shifting arms connecting said levers and pro]ect1ng from sa1d casing, a handle con Copies of this patent may he obtained for necting the outer ends of said arms together for simultaneously actuating them, and a spring controlled shiftable casing normally closing the lock casing and capable When shifted to permit access to be had to said handle.
2. A lock comprising a casing, a spring controlled shackle having the arms thereof normally extending therein, one of the arms of said shackle provided With seats, spring controlled locking levers arranged in said casing and engaging in said seats to prevent outward movement of the shackle, shifting arms connecting said levers and projecting from said casing, a handle connecting the outer ends of said arms together for simultaneously actuating them, and a spring controlled shiftable casing normally closing the lock casing and capable when shifted to permit access to be had to said handle, and
means for limiting the outward movement.
of the shackle.
