Be it known that I, CoRNELIUs KnvIT'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen Ridge, in the county of EsseX and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Operating Means, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to transom operating means and has for its primary object to provide simple and eflicient mechamsm which is adapted to be installedl entirely within a hollow-column forming one of the door posts of the doorway to a room.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is rapid in its action, economical to manufacture, and which requires small effort to manipulate.

It is well known in the art to provide ti ansom operating mechanism which is contained almost entirely within the door jamb or a hollow column in which one end of the transom is journaled. Various mechanical' trains have been employed of which some occupied small space but required considerable time and efl'ort to manipulate, and oftentimes expensive to manufacture.
The advantageous 'features of the present invention will be seen from the following description of the preferred embodiment of my invention shown on the drawing.
The door frame shown in Fig.A 1 includes the laterally spaced hollow columns 1 and 2 onl opposite sides of the closed door 3, a
transom 11 being swingingly mounted above the door and provided with operating connections presently to be referred to, in the hollow jamb or column 2, a knob 5 being mounted on the outer end of a hand lever 6 which is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is pivoted at 7 on a pad or block 8, on an inner wall of the hollow column. A stop or lug 9 on said pad or block retains the lever V6 in either position to which it is moved, a. vieldable strap 10 being adapted to permit a swinging movement of said lever but tending to hold it behind the shoulder at either end of said lug. The lower end of a connecting rod 11 is connected at 12 with lever 6, its upper end being connected at 13 to the horizontal arm 14 of a bell crank pivo'ted at 15. The upwardly extending arm 16 of said bell crank is provided with a slot 17 for slidably accommodating a stud 18 on the lower end of a lever 19'which is pivoted at 20 adjacent the free edge of said transom 4; in closed position as shown in Fig. 2. The lever 19 is provided with a slot 21 intermediately of its ends, within which sldes a stud 22 carried by a crank arm 23 which as shown in Fig. 5 is provided with an integrally formed cylinder 24 journaled in a wall of the hollow jamb or column 2. Secured -to the lower right hand corner of the transom 4 is a corner bracket 25 which is rounded below as shown in Figs. 6 and 10. Projecting from said corner bracket is a squared lug 26 which fits a eorrespondingly formed Socket in the portion 24: of crank arm 23. A cotter 27 prevents the separation of crank arm'23 and corner bracket 25. A packing plate 28 provided with a hole 29 to accommodate portion 24:, is interposed between Crank arm 23 and the wall of said hollow column 2. The corner bracket 30 shown in Fig. 9 is secured to the l'wer left hand corner of the transom 11 and provided with 'a pintle 31 which is coaxial with the journal 24 and adapted to be positioned in a fixed plate 32 carried by the door jamb 1 through a slot 23. The advantages of this construction will now be readily understood in connection with the foregoing description.v Thus by arrangzingthe lever 19 to swing about an axis adjacent the path of the swinging edge of the transom, it becomes possible to secure a relatively long power arm with respect to a work arm which is inlcluded in the power armv and all contained which are quite difficult to move by vpresent hand lever 6. It is to be noted that all ofA the connections are simple, pivotal bearings which transmit power in a direction substantially tangential to the pivoted elements and lengthwise of the connecting rod 11 in such a way as to enable the transom et to be operated by mechanism contained wholly within the hollow jamb 2 and with the least possible effort applied to hand lever 6 consistent with rapid manipulation.y r
One of the' great advantages of' the fore going construction is that it may be inclosed inga hollow column 1*'x4'l for its complete operation; It requires only a movementlof 2-2," to either open or close the transom to full capacity and gives sufficientV lever-age for easily opening and closing heavy transoms Well known devices.

In a device of the character described, a hollow column, a lever pivotally suspended Within said holloW column, a swinging frame or transom having means journaled in the Wall of said column for connecting said frame to said lever intermediate to the ends of said lever, a bell Crank pivoted below said lever Within said column and having 11 upwardly extending arm connected to the depenuing end of the first said lever, and means connected to the other arm of said bell Crank for oscillating said lever and frame or transom, said oscillating means including a rod extending lengthwise of said column and having its upper end connected to the other arm of said bell Crank, and a hand operated lever pivoted at one end Within said column and connected to the loWer end of said rod Within said column.
