TRANSOlVI-OPERATING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application filedMay 8, 1915. Serial No. 26,754.
To all 'whom 11t may concern:
Be it known that I, CoRNELIUs KnvIT'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen Ridge, in the county of EsseX and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Operating Means, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to transom operating means and has for its primary object to provide simple and eflicient mechamsm which is adapted to be installedl entirely within a hollow-column forming one of the door posts of the doorway to a room.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is rapid in its action, economical to manufacture, and which requires small effort to manipulate.
lWith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts of simple construction referred to in the specification in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a front elevation of a door and door frame provided with my improved transom operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a section of the door j amb or door frame column showing the main parts of said mechanism in side elevation; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the front wall of said column removed showing the parts in positions corresponding to the transom in open position; Figis a front elevation of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is-a fragmentary detail section; Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 are detail lperspective views to be hereinafter referred to. Fig. 10 is a detail section of one branch of either of the corner brackets shown in Figs. 6 and 9.
It is well known in the art to provide ti ansom operating mechanism which is contained almost entirely within the door jamb or a hollow column in which one end of the transom is journaled. Various mechanical' trains have been employed of which some occupied small space but required considerable time and efl'ort to manipulate, and oftentimes expensive to manufacture.
The advantageous 'features of the present invention will be seen from the following description of the preferred embodiment of my invention shown on the drawing.
The door frame shown in Fig.A 1 includes the laterally spaced hollow columns 1 and 2 onl opposite sides of the closed door 3, a
One of the' great advantages of' the fore going construction is that it may be inclosed inga hollow column 1*'x4'l for its complete operation; It requires only a movementlof 2-2," to either open or close the transom to full capacity and gives sufficientV lever-age for easily opening and closing heavy transoms Well known devices.
YVhat I claim is: v, v p 1. In a device of the 'character`described,
" a vhollow column, a frame or transom without said hollow column, said frame Vor transom being movable about an axis, a lever mounted within' said hollow column on a fixed'pivot Aabovesaid'axis and extending below'said axis, means extending through the'wall of said hollow column for transmitting the movement of said lever to said frame or transom, an operating member extending from within'said hollow column,
and'means for connecting said' operating member to said lever. V
2. In a device of thepcharacter described, a hollow column, a frame or transom journaled at one end in the wall of said hollow column, a crank arm carried by saidframe or transom, a' lever mounted within said hollow column on a fixed pivot above the journaling axis-of said frame or transom, said lever vdep'ending from said pivot and having an operating connection With A said cranl; arm, an operating member extending throu the Wall of said hollow columnbelowfsaid leveryand means within said hollow column for connecting a portion of said lever below said Crank arm to said operating member.
