-' clamp, adapted for use as a temporary binder. These devices are mainly used for temporarily holding a number of sheets of paper, letters orthe like, andusually comprise a clamp mounted within a foldable cover. g
The invention consists primarily in the peculiar construction of the clip, whereby the parts thereof may be assembled and secured in their operativepositlon within the minimum of labor, and wherein only one of the parts of the device is permanently secured in position, this one part serving to hold all of the other parts ofthe device in their proper places. r
The invention further consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts, all of which will be fully hereinafter described.

Referring to the variousparts by reference characters, A designates the book cover within which the clamp is secured; and B the papers held by the clamp.
The paper-holding clip consists of three main or principal parts or elements, the base plate 1; the clamping-jaw 2, and the opening cam 3. The base 1 consists of the bottom plate 4, which is turned upslightly atits forward edge to form a clamping edge 5.
The ends of'this base plate are turned up Wardly to form the lugs 6. Between these fingers 8, the convex side of said fingers being uppermost and adapted to engage on the,"
lugs, and near their forward edges, is piv-j otally mounted the opening cam 3, said cam being'provided at its'ends with bearings or pivots 7 which fit loosely in apertures 1n the upstanding lugs'6. The cam 3is formed near its ends with the slightly curved cambe 1 more fully hereinafter. described. The aw-opening cam 315 provided near its center w1th an integral forwardly extending lever or finger-piece, 9,- which projects through an aperture in the clamping-jaw and in its normal position extends forwardly over said jaw as shown in the drawings.
The clamping jaw inits normal clamping position extends from the forward edge 5 of base 1 upwardly and rearwardly to a point dlre tly over and close 'to cam 3. From this point said jaw curves downwardly, andthen under side to clam jawiQ, all of which will I upwardly forming the concave-0r substan tially semi-circular channel 10, the under side of saidchannel bearing on the base plate 1', 1 In this channel is arranged a coil spring 11, 5 one end 12 of said spring bearing on the up-" per .side of the clamping-jaw forward of the axial lineof the cam 3. The other end 13 of this spring bears on thebase plate at the rear edge'thereof, and in the rear of the spring coil 11. The rear edge of the clamping-j aw is notchedorcut out as shown at 17 V in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, to permit the end 13 of the springto bear on the bottom plate near I its rear edge. The spring is held in its position in the channel 10 by a pin l which extends through the spring and whose ends are rigidly secured in the lugs 6. j The clamping-jaw is formed with the aperture 15 through which the finger-piecef) extends.
In the normal, or clamping position of the jaw 2 its forward edge will engage thefor-- 7 Ward edge of the base plate -1,at the clamping edge 5, and the under sideof the channel part '10 will bear on the :upper surface of; the base 1 directly under the spring coil 11, as shown inFig. 2. The clamp-ing-jawextends above the cam 3-so that thestrain of the springll will notbe brought on thecam, except, of'course, when the clamping-jaw isi'opened or raised by means of the cam 8. The pivots ofthejcam 3 are loosely mounted in the lugs 6, so that in the assembleddevices; the onlyparts permanently and rigidly connected together arethe pin lland the-lugs 60f thebase' plate.
When the clamping-jaw'is raised by-means' of the camB, the curved channel part 10 moves around the spring 11, as clearly shown in Figs. '3 and 4, thereby rendering it unnecessary to pivotally mount the clampingjaw in the lugs 6. In order to open the clamping-jaw the finger-piece or lever 9 is forced upwardly and rearwardly. This brings the convex surfaces of the cam fingers 8 against the under side of the clampingjaw in front of the curved part 16 which over-lies the cam 3. The lever 9 is then forced rearwardly until the ends of the cam fingers 8 are in the rear of a vertical line the base plate need not necessarily be hori- It will also be understood that the zontal. position which has been described as vertical, is a line perpendicular to the bottom plate l of the base and extending through the axis or" the cam 3. 7
It is to be notedthat when the clampingjaw is in its operating positionit extends over and is 'free of the cam 3. This is an advantage for the reason that-the small bearings or pivots 7 of the cam are not subjected to the strain and wear which would be on them if the clamping-jaw engaged the cam in its'closed position.

A clip for a temporary binder comprising a base plate, a clamping-jaw, an opening cam arranged between-the jaw and base plate and adapted to move the jaw away from the base plate, a spring for holding the clamping-jaw, a portion of the clamping-jaw in the rear of the opening cam extending between thespring and the base plate, whereby the spring and the opening cam will serve as means for holding the clamping-jaw in position.
3. A. clip for a temporary binder comprising a base plate, a clamping-jaw, an opening cam-between the aw and the base plate, that portion of the jaw in the rear of the cam being formed to provide a transverse seml-cylindrlcal groove or channel, a
coil spring arranged in said groove and engaging thej aw and the base plate, and rigid meansfor permanently securing the spring n place.

6. A clip for a temporary binder comprisinga base plate, a bodily movable and swinging clamping jaw, an opening cam between" the jaw and the base plate, a coil spring extending acrossthe rear end of the clamping jaw and yield-ingly holding the said jaw in its closed position and retaining the rear end of the jaw between the spring and the base plate.
7. A clip for a temporary binder comprising a base-plate, a bodily movable clamping jaw, an opening cam between the jaw andt-he base plate, a coil spring extending across therear end of the aw and forming a cylindrical bar about'w-hich the rear end of the jaw may turn, one end of said spring serving .to hold the jaw yieldingly in its closed position.

A'cl-ip for a temporary binder cornprising a base plate, a clamping jaw having its rear end formed intoa transversely ex tending channel, a coil spring extending arranged within the said channel and forming a bar about which therear end of the clamping jaw may move, one end of said spring bearing on the clam-ping and yield-ingly holding it in its closed position.
