Description
C. W. BECK.
COLLAPSIBLE CARRIER.
APPLICATION men ran. 23. I915.
1,1 58,885, Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
glwvcn for U. Wfiecit STAES lo a COLLAPSIBLE CARRIER.
Application filed February 23, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER W. Bmga citizen of the United States, residing at Canastota, in the county of McCook and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in collapsible luggage carriers for vehicles of various kindsand consists of a simple and etlicient device of this rier. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view of the luggage carrier folded.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the back of the luggage carrier which has lugs B adapted to engage over the back of a seat, dash board or other part of the vehicle. The shank portions B of said hooks are threaded and pass througheyes B upon the back and winged nuts B are mounted upon each threaded shank and adapted to hold the device in place.
C designates the bottom having an angled flange C which is hinged at C to the back, and D designates the front of the carrier which has an angled flange D, hinged at D to the bottom. The ends are designated by letter E and are pivotally mounted upon the side .1) which, and said ends when the device is collapsed, are adapted to fold against the inner face of the side 11), and each is provided with an aperture F for the reception of a rod H, which latter has a. sleeve H at one end through which a rod 0 has a sliding movement. Said rod 0 passes through a slot N in the plate N,
Specification of Letters Patent.

there being one at each end of the bottom, as shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
At the end of each rod is an eye 0 which, when the carrier is opened for use, engages the marginal edge of the plate N, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The upper end of the rod 0 has an eye N engaging an aperture in an angle plate N pro ecting from the back.
F astened to the bottom is a bail-shaped member,.designated by letter G, serving as a rack upon which articles may be held.
Bracket members T, which are of resilient metal, are fastened to the bottom and over the free ends of which the rods O are held when the device is folded.
By the provision of a carrier made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that a simple and efficient means is provided whereby the device, when in use, may be opened up as shown in the drawings, conveniently. and quickly attached over the edge of a seat, dash board or other part of a vehicle, the same being braced by the rods in the manner shown and, when folded, the parts may be reduced to a compact form, as disclosed in Fig. 4.
What I claim to be new is 1. A folding luggage carrier for vehicles, etc., comprising a' back, supporting hooks thereon, a bottom hinged to the lower marginal edge of the back, a side hinged to the bottom and ends hinged to the side, slotted plates upon the bottom, rods secured at their upper ends to the back and passing through said slotted plates upon the bottom and terminating each in an eye at its lower end and adapted to form a support for the bottom.
2. A folding luggage carrier for vehicles, etc., comprising a back, supporting hooks thereon, a bottom hinged to the lower marginal edge of the back, a side hinged to the bottom and ends hinged to the side, slot-ted plates upon the bottom, rods secured at their upper ends to the back and passing through said slotted plates upon the bottom and ter minating each in an eye at its lower end and adapted to form a support for the bottom, a collai-inovable upon each rod, a rod secured to each collar and passing through an aperture in an end of the carrier.
3. A folding luggage carrier for vehicles,
etc., comprising a back with supporting hooks thereon, a bar secured to the back and having its ends bent at right angles beyond the opposite ends of the back and apertured, formed into eyes, cooperating with the 10 a bottom hinged to the back, a side hinged slotted plates to support the bottom.
to said bottom, ends hinged to the side, In testimony whereof I hereunto attic; plates secured to the bottom and having my signature in presence of two itnesses.
slotted ends projecting beyond the ends of y the latter, rods passing through said slots CHRISTOPHER BECIX' and'having eyes at corresponding ends en- Witnesses:
gaging the apertures in the angled ends of R. H. ARMSTRONG,
said bar and the opposite ends of the rods L. ARRAR.
