`certain new yand useful Improvements in .Dies for Insulators g and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact.`
description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, formingga part of this specification7 and to the ref- ,erence-numerals. marked thereon.
The present invention ',relates 'to improvements 1n dies'having partlcular reference to dies for molding insulators of the type em bodying a flange provided with a centrally disposed neck and a series ot ,downwardly proj ectingpetti'coats disposedA concentrically on the low'efr face ofthe flange, and it yhas s, foi' its object to provide a construction which will enable'the die to be removed readily from the plastic material after the article is molded. further object of theinventionis the provisionof a structure whereby pettii coats of any desired thickness beI formed on the insulator in a ready manner, and without weakening the insulator at the points where the petticoats join the flanges.
Another 'obj ect of the invention is the provision of an improved device of this char acter capable of producing threads on .the interior of the central neck on the flange.
, To these and otherends the invention consists in .certain improvements and combina tions of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novelfeaturesA being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure l is a top plan view of a die constructed according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a portion appearing in section; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line of Fig. 1, and showing the die mounted Yon a rotary head, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing a portion of one of the yieldably supported sections of the die. l'
Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts.
The invention, as illustrated in the present embodiment, includes a. support 1 which is attached in any suitable manner to a rotary and vertically movable head 2, whereby the necessary movement is imparted to the die for forming the insulator, as will beherein`- after described more fully. v'Ihe'supportl carries the body portionof thedie, and to this end, lis threaded interiorly to yreceive the downwardly projecting central member 3 Which .has a shoulder @supporting the annular sectionor groove "forming member 5,
the latter'beingprovided witli'an upstanding collar 6y to enga-ge a corresponding recess 1n the support 1. In addition tov the central membe Sand the groove forming memberi, the'lbody portion of the die embodies a seriesof concentrically'arranged rings or groove forming members- 7 ywhich are suitably mounted on the support' 1 in the `following manner. Said support is threaded exteriorlyatfitslower end, and attached thereto is the spider 8 provided with the arms 9 and the base 10, the latter being recessed on its lower face to receive the flanges 11 on Vthe rings 7, the latter being attached to the spiderin. any suitable manner, as by means of the screws 1'2. kThe spider Sis provided with annular openings 13 whichv communicate with spaces formed between the respective annular groove torming members 7, so as to provide an atmospheric communication for the grooves be: tween the rings that form'the petticoats on the insulator.
The working face of thebody portion of the die is provided with a plurality of members or sections, yieldably mounted to move in a direction substantially transverse to the plane of the working face, and to this end the groove forming members 5 and 7 carry a series of annular `membersl sections 1l, each of which is arranged concentrically about the vcentral member andis normally seated in a recess provided forthis purpose in the groove forming' members. Each mem-' `ber 14: is supported on a series of plungers surface of the die, and until suicient air .admitted through the openings ,13 to fill roundtlefmovable members, andl thus perv"iff-mit. a ready release of the entire die without Vweakening or. marring in any way the iin--l ished surface of the article.
By .the provision ofthe-air openings 13 which permit Vlentrance of airfto, the upper edges lof the pet-A ticoats ofthe insulator, the latter can be made' much thinner 'than by a. die constructed in any othermanner, and it is unnecessary to reinforce or thicken the petticoats at any bart in order tovercome possibility of their breaking as the die is withdrawn.
vThe castor moldv is designated at I9, and
is-the' plastic substance 4to beformed into closed at its 4low'erend by a'v suitaole relatively .movablesectiom comprising in the"A iso anin'sulatorfof `a well knowntype.` In the "operation, the die is moved-y downwardly to engage-the plastic material 'and is rotated simultaneously so as-to produce the interior threads von the central neck of the insulator, this being accomplished by the threaded lower end of the central member 3. Thecentral member 3 'is preferably hollow, and is present instance-a plunger 21 adapted normally to engage. the end of the sleeve 22 that is secured within the member 3. The plungerV 21 carries a collar 23 'at its-upper end and is 'adapted to be held in normalposition by means of a spring V24 coperating` with said collar and with the shoulder on the sleeve 22. Thus, 'as the die islwithdrawn from A the molded article, the plunger 21 is retained for an instant in engagement -with the plas- 'tic material, moving relatively to the central memberas the latter is raised and rotated. Immediately air' enters and,y surroundsthe groove.
lower end of the plunger 21, permitting its ready release from the plastic.
I claim as my invention:
l.. In a die ofthe type described, a central.
member and a plurality of concentric groove 'forming members, each provided on its forward edge with 'a channel in which is yieldingly mounted an annular member, movable in a direction transverse to the working face of the die, whereby said annular member may adhere to the formed body while the remainder of the die is retracted a short distance. V
' 2. In a die of the type described, a central member and an annular groove forming member substantially. concentric therewith, said annular groove forming member provided on its forward edge with a channel in which is'mounted an annular memberLmovable in a direction transverse to the working face of the die, whereby said annular member may adhere vto the formed body while the remainder of the dieis retracted a short distance.
3. In a die of the type described, a central V CORNELIUS VAN DYKE BENNETT. Witnesses:
