CARPENTERS TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Uct. 19, 1915.
Application filed June 9, 1913. Serial No. 772,661.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. ROWLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerman, in the county of Chaves, State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carpenters tools.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of acarpenters tool which may be used either as a rule, square, level, pencil or compass.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side View constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the parts in the position they would occupy when the device is to be used as an ordinary rule or as a level; Fig. 2, a View similar to Fig. 1 with the parts in the position they would occupy when it is desired to use the tool as a square; Fig. 3. a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the tool is shown as comprising a body 10 one edge of which is provided centrally with a recess 11 in which is suitably mounted a spirit level 12. The outer edge of the level 12 registers with the corresponding edge of the body 10 so as to form an uninterrupted straight edge. The body 10 is graduated as at 13 in inches and fractions of an inch. The edge of the body 10 opposite that provided with the recess 11 is provided with arecess 14 extending longitudinally of the body and confined between opposite sides homes of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the thereof. Pivotally mounted in the recess 14 is one end of an arm 15, a set screw 16 forming the pivotal connection between the arm 15 and the body 10. This arm 15 is adapted to be moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 and secured in said position by the set screw 16. Then the arm 15 is disposed as shown in Fig. 2 the tool is adapted for use as a souare, the arm 15 being at right angles to the body 10. The end of the body 10 remote from the set screw 16 is tapered as at 17 and said body is provided with a longitudinal recess 18 opening through the tapered end. Slidable in the recess 18 is a pencil 19 adapted to be secured against movement in said recess by a set screw 20. The free end of the arm 15 is pointed as at 21 so as render said arm capable of being used as a pivot leg of a compass. When the tool is used as a compass the arm 15 may be adiusted to different angles with respect to the body 10 according to the radius of the particular circle or are it is desired to trace with the pencil 19. The inner end of the arm 15 is provided with a projection 22 which serves as a means for facilitating the movement of said arm from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2.
IVhat I claim is A tool of the class described comprising a flat body having a recess in one edge opening through one end of the body, an arm having a fixed pivotal-connection with the body in said recess and having its outermost edge disposed entirely within the re cess when said arm is in folded position. and a projection on the inner end of said arm adapted to extend outwardly of one end of the body when said arm is folded whereby pressure on said projection in one direction will swing said arm out of the recess.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK G. ROWLAND.
