COMBINATION HULE AND BEVEL.
Specification of Letters-Patent.
Patented- J an. 8, 1907 Application filedJ 11y 12,1906; Srial'No. 325,970]
7 To. all wh'omitmay concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD PETER J'onn SON,& citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Forks, in the county ofGrand Forks and State of N orthDakota, have invented a new and useful Combination Rule and Bevel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined rules and bevels, and has for its In the accompanying drawings,- forming a part of this-specification, and in which corre; spondingparts are denoted bylike designating characters, isillustrated the preferred form of the embodiment'of the invention capable of carrying the same intopr'actical operation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the princi le or sacrificing any of the advantages of t -s invention within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved implement in folded position. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the improved implement in en position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view 0 the graduated member of the rule-joint. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the slotted member of the rule-joint.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pin-carrying member of the rule-joint, Fig. 5 being in reversed position to Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a perspective view, enlarged, of the clamp-nut. Fig. 7 is a sectional view illustrating the'manner in which the clamp-nut and pin are concealed and protected when the rule-sections are folded.
The improved device is preferably applied to the ordinary folding measuring-rule employed by carpenters and like mechanics and embraces a construction which when in folded osition presents a symmetrical outline wit out projecting parts.
In the drawings the improved device is shown applied to a carpenters folding rule of'the ordinary construction, the two blades being represented, respectively, at 10 and 11 and jointed intermediately; as 9.1312 13. The
blade 10 is also dprovided with spaced joint plates 14 15 an -.theblade11' rovided-wit1r the intermediate joint-plate 16 of the usual rulejoin-t" construction and pivotally.
united, as at 17. The rule late 151s -pr'o-- vided with a pin 18, threaded at the outerend and extending through an aperture" 19in the plate 14, while the. plate 16 is provided with a slot120,con'centrie to the pivot 17 and through whichthe pin 18 also extends; A clam -nut 21 engages the-pin18 exterior'ly of the plate 14 and bearsuponthe same; By this simple means it is obviousthat nut 21is loosened the blades 10 ll-rnay opened to any required extent a'nd clamped in anydesired relative position bymer'e'lyop erating the clamp nut, and thus compressing the thr'ee'p-lates-14, 15 and 16" together.
The'plate 14 is provided with graduations at 22, representing the degrees of a circle, and: the plate 16 is provided with an index or pointer 23 to enable. the blade-ll' to be sen-at:- Thus by the any desired degree or angles. coaction of'the graduationson the blade 14 the index on the blade 16, and the clamp-nut 21 the blade 11 may be adjusted to any desired angle relative to the blade 10 and firmly clamped in the'adjusted position.
The blade 10 is provided with plates 24 25, conforming in outline to the combined sections 10 and 11 when folded and serving the twofold purpose of a housing to the sections when in folded position and as an extension of the blade 10 for coaction with the blade 11 when the latter is adjusted at an angle thereto, as will be obvious.
Slidably disposed in the free end of the blade isa graduated bar-gage 26, having an enlarged head 27, corresponding to the curved portions of the plates 14, 15, and 16, and provided with a cavity 28 to receive'the nut 21 and the protruding portion of the pin 18 when the implement is in folded osition, as in Fig. 1, and thus entirely concea ing and protecting the nut.
The enlarged head 27 of the bar-gage conforming to the outer portions of plates 14 15 16 when the implement is in folded position,
the rule-joint end of the im lement prel rounding objects.
The device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and applied to any size or form of rule manufactured.
I it Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is- 1. A rule comprising jointed sections, one of said sections having a threaded pin extending therefrom and the other section having a slot to receive said pin, a clamping-nut engaging said pin, a bar-gage slida ly engaging one of said sections and provided with an enlarged head having a recess formed therein for the reception of the nut and the protruding portion of said pin, and a sectional plate secured to one of the rule-sections and forming a housing for both sides of the rule when the latter is folded.
2. A rule comprising intermediately-jointed sections, a joint uniting said sections and formed of superimposed plates semicircular at the outer portions and pivotally united, housing-plates connected respectively to the jointed members of one of said rule-sections,
adjusted position, a bar-gage slidably engaging one of said sections and having an enlarged head corresponding to said joint-pl ates and bearing upon the same when the sections are in folded position, said head being provided with a recess for the reception of the clamping means, and a sectional plate secured to one of the rule-sections and forming a housing for both sides of the rule when the latter is folded.
4. A rule comprising two sections, a joint. uniting said sections and formed of superimposed plates pivotally united, a bar-gage slidably engaging one of said sections and having an enlarged head corresponding to said joint-plates and a sectional plate secured to one of the rule-sections and forming a housing for both sides of the rule when the latter is folded.
5. A rule comprising pivotally-united sections, clamping means piercing the pivoted ends of said sections, a bar-gage slidably engaging one of said sections and having an enlarged head provided with a recess for the reception of the clamping means, and a sectional plate secured to one of the rule-seetions and forming a housing for both sides of the rule when the latter is folded.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDl/VARD PETER JOHNSON.
