JOHN B. TOTH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED PATTERN-DRAFTING DEVICE.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN 13 Tom, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at' Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin' Combined Pattern-Drafting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being'had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined pattern-drafting device and has for its object toprovide a device'of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means adapted to the formation of compound curves and of scroll-shaped curves as well a's'p'roviding for the forming and cutting of patterns curvilineal in contour.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to, withmeans whereby the device can be adjusted to various sizes'whenthe occasion so requires.
' A further object is to provide a device of the class referred to which-is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, du-
rable, efficient and convenient in its use,
readily set up, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pattern-drafting device, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which can be employed for drafting purposes, making of patterns, cutting of patterns from paper,
"thin metallic plate, lead, and'which cannot onlybe operated manually, but with a machine if desired.
With the foregoing-and other objects in view the invention consists of'a novel'con- "struction, combination and arrangement of f .40
arts as hereinafter-more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the elevation of a device for scribing curves and drafting patterns and cutting patterns in accordance with this, invention. Fig. 2 18 a sectional elevation of one of the longitudinal bars of the frame, taken on line ctaFig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of bar illustrated in Fig; 2.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 0ct.19, 1915.
I Application filecl November 24, 1914-. Serial No. 873,701.
1 Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view of Fig. 1,
through the center thereof, taken on line b]), F 1g. 1. Figs. '5 to 1a are details. Fig. 15 is an elevation, broken away and Fig. 16
is a vertical sectional view of a strip capable of being flexed to provide a curve. Fig. 17. l
is a sectional view of a clamp. I
Referring to the drawings in detail the device lncludes a'frame including a side bar 1, having a longitudinal rib 2 on its upper face vand 'whichextends from a point removed from one end and terminates at the other end of said bar 1. The frame 1 further includes a pair of end bars 3, 4, and
a sidebar formed of two sections 5, 6. The
end bar 3 has its upper face formed with a longitudinal rib 7 which extends from a point removed from one end of said bar and terminates at the other end thereof. The end bar t has its upper face provided with a longitudinal rib 8 which extends from a point removed from one end of the bar 1 and terminates at the other end thereof. The
section 5 of a sectional side bar has its upper with respect to their bars and each of said ribs is rectangular in transverse section. The ends of the bars of'the frame overlap each other'and are adjustably connected together by set screws 11. The innerends of the sections 5, 6, overlap each other and are adjustably connected together by the set screw 12. Straddling the rib 2 is a holding mem ber 13,which is maintained in position by a set screw 14. The holding member 13 has a pin 15, upon which is mounted the head 16, of a horizontal bar 17, which extends between the inner end of the sections 5, 6, as well as projecting therefrom.
Adjustably mounted upon the rib ,2 is a plurality of curve retainers 18 and each of said retainers has its top formed with a groove 19, which flares from the center toward each end. The retainers straddle the rib 2 and are adjustably secured therewith through the medium of set screws 20. The retainers 18 carry binding screws 21 for a v purpose to be presently referred to. Straddling andshiftably mounted upon the rib 8 is a curve retainer 22, straddling and shift-' ably mounted upon the rib 7 a curved retainer 23, straddling-and shiftably mounted upon the rib 9 are curve retainers 24, 25, 26 and straddling and shiftably mounted upon 1 the rib 6 are curveretainers 27, 28 and 29. Each of the retainers 22- and 29is provided with'a bindingv screw 30 anda set screw and each of said. curve retainers 22 and 29 has its top provided with a groove '32'which' flares fromthe center toward each end. The
binding screws 21 and are capable of ex tending intothe grooves of the curve retainers fora purpose to be presently referred to. v
.Mounted upon the rib 8 is a plurality of holding members constructed similar to the member 13, and mounted upon the pins 15 of the saidholding members, upon the rib 8 I are the heads 33, 34, ofbars 35, 36. Thebar 17is,provided with a holding member s1m1- 1 lar to the holding member 13, and the pin of the holding member carried bythe bar 17,
which is indicated at 36?, has mounted thereon the head 37, of a bar 38, the latter extends longitudinally. The bar 35 extends atan inward inclination with respect to the bar 1 and is clamped to a bar 38 which is disposed at an opposite inclination with re spect to the bar 35. The clamp between the bars 35, 38 is indicated at 39, being shown in (Fig. 11). The bar 38 has a head 70, and which is mounted upon the pin 15 of the holding member'shiftably connected to the rib 7.
The bar 38 is clamped to the bar 17 and the clamp is indicated at 40 (Fig. 14). Thebar 381$ clamped to th'e'bar 36 by a clamp 41, (Fig. 21). The various clamps are adjustably secured in position by set screws 42.
Adjustably mounted upon the bar 35, through the medium of the set screws 43, are curve retainers 44, 45, each of which has its upper face formed with a groove 46 flaring fromthe center toward each end and each of which is furthermore provided with a bind- 7 ing screw 47 which extends into the-groove 46. The bar 38 is provided with curve retainers 48, 49, 50 and 51 and each of said re- 'ltainers isadjustably connected to the bar 38 through the medium of the set screws 52. 'Each of thereta'iner's 48 to 51 has a groove 53 in its top, which flares from its center toward each end and each retainer furthermore is provided with abinding'screw 54 the ribs and bars.
curve retainers 59, each having a groove 60 in its upper face which flares from the center toward eachend and said retainers59 are maintained in said position by set screws 61.
The clamp 39 is provided with a pocket 62,
in'which can be mounted, when desired, a
curve retainer 63. The bar 35 isinset as j 64 and the bar 38 is inset as at 65 and ex tends below the bar 64.
inset.
The arrangement of the bars curve retainers is such thatthe CUIVQI'GtQIIIGIS w ll bein alinement wlth eachother The curve The bar'36'is also" retainers are employed for maintaining the fiexiblestrip 66 in a curvilineal manner, as
illustrated in Fig. 1. To change the curvatureof the strip the retainers are shifted along the bars 35, 36, 38 and 38 and upon 1 the ribs 2, 7, 8, 9 and 10, and bar 17 'and'after moved to desired position are fixed in posi tion through the medium of the adjusting screws.
In Figs. 15 and 16-of the drawings is illus-- trated a flexible strip 67, having a smooth top edge 72. v
