Description
GEORGE CHAPMAN.
Improvement in Bolt Heading` Machines..
10.115,702. Pdtencedlune5,?871` GEORGE CHAPMAN, OF ROCKFOBD, ILLINOIS.
MPROVEMENT 1N BOLT-HEADING MACHINES.
Speoiiieaticn forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,702, dated J une 6, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE CHAPMAN, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Bolt-Heading Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa- 'nying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bolt-headers, and the saine will be iirst hereinafter described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly pointed ont in the claim.
Figure 1 is ahorizontal plan view, partly in section; and Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of a bolt-machine provided with my invention.
A is the header-stock; GG, the die-clanips`5 B and L, their respective slides; M N, their nuts; and D O P, a swiveled right-and-left screw. Q Q are bevels on the edges of clamps. S S are fixed blocks, having the projecting rolls It R on their sides and the retracting springs l passing therethrough.
The mode of operation is as follows: The
dies being open, the bolt inserted, and the screw D turned to the right, the slides B L move forward longitudinally toward each other, carry dies'G G against rolls R, clamp the blank, bring 'the header within the recess formed within the dies to receive it, and stave Aup the head.
It will thus be perceived that the clampingdies have two simultaneous movements at right angles to each other, while the header has but one 5 and that the same screw pressure eii'ects the Whole, while it at the same time furnishes to the spring the stored-up power to retract the clamps.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I esteem to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The header F and jaws G G, combined with slides B L, nuts G M, and screw D 0 I), the latter arranged to operate the former, as and for the purpose specified.
` GEORGE CHAPMAN.
